2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X MR: Overdue for tires

08.mitsu.evo.mr.tire.555.jpg

We beat on the tires of our 2008 Mitsubishi Evo MR for long enough. Two of the Yokohamas have life remaining, so they're still on the Evo. This pair was obviously due for replacement. And the screw in the right tire above sealed the deal.

We ordered the Advan A13Cs from Stokes Tire Pros in Santa Monica this morning. Our tires arrived with their afternoon shipment. An $812.25 signature covered all costs, and the MR is now safely back on the road.

Aside from the screw, it's amazing the tires were even drivable in that condition. How many miles were on them?

This is why I hate driving in the rain. I don't have a problem driving. I just hate being around people who don't realize tires do need tread. Its even worse when its automotive journalists.

I was really impressed by that price, until I remembered you said only two tires were replaced.

Lucky you don't get snow.

This car has a performance alignment, eh?

Quite a lot of negative camber. Is that adjustable at the dealer like with the GT-R or do they not bother?

Aren't you supposed to replace all fours on AWD cars? And +1 to that cost for two tires... Yeesh. Then again, I guess that's about what I would pay for two PS2's (RFT though).

yea i would think you should be replacing all 4 tires on an AWD car that shifts its torque

I own a Subaru, and one of the big no-no's in the manual is to never replace just one, two or three tires. Always four at once. And the tires must be within 1/4" of circumference. If you're forced to have mismatched tires, the new tires should at least be "shaved" to match the circumference of the tire(s) that are staying on the car. Get an imbalance in wheel speeds over an extended period of time (due to the new tires spinning slightly slower than the rest), and you got yourself a recipe for torque-bind and/or other problems. One of my co-workers used to work at a Subaru dealership for six years and he said people were outraged when their AWD went kaput. Most of the time it was because they put on mismatched tires.

I'll agree with the need to replace all four tires. The transfer case on previous generation Evos has been known to grenade with slighty low fluid level, so I'd hate to know what it would do with that great of a rotational difference.

Another example would be previous generation Nissan GTRs, where any significant difference in circumference would throw off the ATTESA system.

With regards to the tires, it's too bad you can't go with an alternative to the OEM. The new Potenza RE-11s are out and ~$70/tire cheaper, and the Dunlop Z1 Starspecs are ~$130/tire cheaper. I bet both have better grip.

You guys are voiding big chunks of you warranty if you don't replace all four of your tires.

its really dumb to replace two tires and not the other two, especially on an AWD car that you are constantly doing burnouts in.

you'd think you guys would've learned after you replaced the 05 Jetta's headlight and then three weeks later replaced the other.

just get all new tires.

I found that AWD systems are tire eaters when I ran an Audi A4 Quattro but the worst I ever got was 15K out of a set. At 12K and change you guys had better shop for better tread wear and/or go easier on the throttle on that puppy.

Wow -- $812 for TWO tires? I'm checking Tire Rack.com for my tires...

I swear the owner of Stokes must see edmunds and say "My kids going to college after all!"

I should really tally up what they spend there one day....

If you're going to run that much negative camber, you need to take the car to a road course or autocross more often, or drive it harder in the turns to even it out. :)

I'm assuming these were the rears?

These LT tests should be called "Edmunds: Living on the Edge"

Yikes. Good thing the rain doesn't come to California(It's the taxes I guess..)

Do you guys ever rotate your tires? It seems like every time you are buying new tires you only get a pair rather than all four. I understand that some vehicles have different sizes front and rear (GT-R), but not all do. Does the EVO have different sizes front to rear? I would think that by rotating your tires at appropriate intervals (5-6k miles)you would both extend the life of any given tire and also end up with a full set due for repolacement at the same time which would be especially beneficial for the AWD cars in the fleet.
