Bottom line, the GT-R with the revised software will be quicker with the VDC on, but not as quick as it was before with the VDC turned off. Only a trip to the track will reveal exactly how performance will be affected.
This is what we wrote a couple of weeks ago in our investigative piece Nissan Reprograms the GT-R. This reporting was based on interviews with many members of the GT-R team at Nissan's headquarters in Nashville, TN. It was also wrong. Turns out the GT-R gets quicker with the VDC on and off.
How do we know?
Well, we had our long-term GT-R reprogrammed and then we took it to the track. Here are the results:
VDC on
0-30 mph-----1.6 sec.
0-45 mph-----2.5 sec.
0-60 mph-----3.6 sec. (3.4 sec. with one foot of rollout like on a dragstrip)
0-75 mph-----5.1 sec.
1/4 Mile-------11.7 sec. @ 118.5 mph
VDC off
0-30 mph-----1.6 sec.
0-45 mph-----2.5 sec.
0-60 mph-----3.6 sec. (3.3 sec. with one foot of rollout like on a dragstrip)
0-75 mph-----5.0 sec.
1/4 Mile-------11.6 sec. @ 118.9 mph
Test Driver Comments: "Best run with VDC off...but only by a few hundredths. Made a significant effort to warm tires to run w/ vdc off. Result is very little wheelspin. Technique is essentially the same w/vdc on or off: wood brake, wood throttle, achieve 3k rpm and lift brake. All runs in "A" Wheelspin will kill time (bog) w/vdc on."
That means the car is now quicker with the VDC on then it was with it off. We've tested our GT-R several times. The most recent was for a comparison test with the new Corvette ZR1 back in October. That day it ran these numbers with the VDC off:
0-30 mph-----1.6 sec.
0-45 mph-----2.6 sec.
0-60 mph-----3.8 sec. (3.5 sec. with one foot of rollout like on a dragstrip)
0-75 mph-----5.3 sec.
1/4 Mile-------11.8 sec. @ 118.6 mph
We also once tested our car with the VDC on for kicks. It was much slower than it is now:
0-30 mph-----2.3 sec.
0-45 mph-----3.2 sec.
0-60 mph-----4.3 sec. (4.0 sec. with one foot of rollout like on a dragstrip)
0-75 mph-----5.8 sec.
1/4 Mile-------12.3 sec. @ 118.5 mph
And so the answer is clear. If you have a GT-R, get it reprogrammed. It's free speed.

It does look strange with all that blur on the rear wheel but none on the front.
altimadude00 says:
07:33 PM, 02/11/09
It does have blur at the front. The AWD system is rear-biased.
Mechanically speaking, yes the car is faster, but I bet the 'ole Butt-o-meter wouldn't be able to tell the difference. That's not what I think as "Free speed." I have to feel it.
billt9 says:
07:36 PM, 02/11/09
Still the same car then. Just more reliable.
Just what software updates are suppose to do.
337 says:
08:04 PM, 02/11/09
And why didn't they ship them like this?
CaptainChaos says:
09:00 PM, 02/11/09
I think "free" is a bit premature here. Yes, Godzilla is now faster but have all of the kinks in the update (or the original software, for that matter) been worked out? Only time will tell, I suppose.
Overall, though, I'm glad you went with the upgrade. It is a more accurate representation of what GT-R owners are and should be doing.
billt9 says:
09:56 PM, 02/11/09
kinks? It's a software patch. Software are suppose to be patched when newer improved versions are available (but mostly only when customers complain since dealerships don't want to do the work). MOST cars have ECU and TCU updates available and all that.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but you just replaced the tires with a cheaper set, right? So it's running faster numbers with worse tires.

So it is actually faster. Still think the 11.3 is not possible ?

You guys need some Dunlops to try out. They are stickier. The car should be faster with them. I think you will pick up another tenth or two. Then add some 93 and some really good air...

wow, scorp76, you're corny. you're going to take the time and effort to come on a GT-R article and hate. good for you.
anyway, i'm glad this reprogram didn't neuter the car. that was the one thing i was worried about. you guys made the right decision.

what transmission mode did you guys do this in???
jaguar36 says:

This is nowhere near enough data to same decisively that the software update makes it faster. Not only could weather (air temp, wind, humidity) have effected it, but it had ~10k less miles on it then. Ohh and you guys changed tires... that might have made a bit of difference too.
dougtheeng says:
06:11 AM, 02/12/09
Sounds like a win-win: its faster (or at least as fast, depending on conditions) and you've satisfied Nissan.
stingray454 says:

No more 3.3 or 3.4 seconds 0-60 for this car. It's also no faster than a Z06 in 0-60 or 1/4 mile, although infinitely easier to launch than a Z06. A Z06 will still crush it over 100, or 0-150, as before (note the difference in 1/4 mile trap speeds).
estreka says:

I'm curious if any of this might be related to engine break in? Usually an engine will run more efficiently as it ages. How distant are those numbers from each other, mileagewise?
SUPERBADD75 says:

i'm still amazed that this car isn't an Infiniti. a car of its status shouldn't be sold or serviced at the same dealerships as Versas and Altimas. generally Infiniti stores offer a much better dealer experience, and more perks. just my opinion of course.
g8gtnorth says:
08:20 AM, 02/12/09
By that logic, A3's shouldn't be sold next to R8's? Corvette's next to Cobalts? AMG's next to B200's? Rabbit and Phaeton?? *sigh*
Sounds like Nissan did their homework, btw. Impressive stuff.
e10rice says:

Thats fantastic! I, like most were worried it would fall on its face after the update, but it didnt. So now we need a write up on how the car feels after the update with daily driving and a track day! Has the update changed the car in those situations?

stingray454, what z06 EVER got to 60 faster than this? your wrong.
jaguar36, what "more data" do you need? stick to your V8.
Mr. Scott Oldham, do you know if this reprogram provided you with the little 5 hp bump that the 2010s get updated with? and what transmission mode did you find was the best?? RRR?

Being the guy who does the numbers, I can say that these two test days were as close as you could possibly hope for weather wise and tested at the same track. The numbers are comparable.
Best run was, as noted in the comments, in "A" and no other changes. Just stick in in drive and go.

cwmoo740, they put on a new pair of Bridgestone Potenza RE070R tires in the front. You were probably thinking about the long-term BMW E46 M3.
"You guys need some Dunlops to try out. They are stickier. The car should be faster with them. I think you will pick up another tenth or two. Then add some 93 and some really good air..."
tyndago, I think they intentionally wanted to replace the tires with the same ones that came on the car when they bought it. They recently did the same thing (and explained it) with their long-term BMW E82 135i here.

Mike I wasnt serious. I couldnt tell ya if my Dodge is faster now or not. Its a van so it doesnt matter.
Ive only seen one of these cars in person on the road...it sounds real good. Reprogram sounds like it went well. Always a good thing to take a car to the dealer and have it be faster than before you took it.
