All day today, I bet you've been dying to know what groceries I bought over the weekend. Well, thanks to this nifty photo, you can! Bananas, strawberries, bread...
More to the point, though, is that our 2009 Mazda 6 has a big trunk. It measures 16.6 cubic feet worth of capacity, which is more than Accord or Camry. It's nicely shaped, too, and has strut-style scissor hinges for the trunk lid.

And kudos to you for having re-usable bags.

Modern cars always amaze me with the size of their trunks (Evolution too, but in a bad way). Some of them, like this car, seem to bend space itself, like an automotive bag of holding.

Have you seen the trunk of the Audi A5/S5? You could fit a couple of bodies back there!
Anywho, I like the reusable bags, and the easily compostable foods. Seem like somebody is trying to do something for the environment....

Checked one out at the Auto Show (Toronto) earlier today. Really nice looking inside and out and I did take a peek at that cavernous trunk. Zoom zoom is definitely off the agenda, but they've delivered a good looking, comfortable and luxurious cruiser that should have broad appeal.
Now that Mazda 3 - big disappointment there. But that's off topic.

I see they're still using the mouse fur carpet. The Mazda3 is pretty nice IMO.

I suppose that by contemporary standards this must be considered an adequate trunk, despite being a scant 0.7 cubic feet larger than a 20-year-old 626 that was 14 inches shorter and 570 lb lighter. But a 2008 5-door had more than 22 cubic feet with the seats up, and you didn't have to bend over and insert your entire upper body through the shallow opening in order to reach the back of the cargo area, nor was potential cargo as constricted by the height and depth of the decklid. The Accord is insane--I don't understand why the multilink rear suspension is so much bulkier than the Mazda that it constricts the width of the passthrough and the cargo area between the wheels.

I've heard some negative things about the reliability of Mazdas in general, and the 6 in particular -- including a few horror stories about a friend's 6 that is trying hard to self destruct.
I saw the new 3 at the Philly Auto Show, and I really liked it (esp. given the base price of $15,700), but I would worry about the reputation...
So what's the word on the robustness of the latest models?

@phantasmic - I have a 2003 6s that has been extremely reliable, save one replaced oil pan gasket. Electrically, it's far ahead of the '98 VW Passat I replaced with the 6, although I suppose that's not a hard record to break.
I've always been pleased with the space my '03 6's trunk and fold down seat offer. I fit a 12' ladder without only about a foot sticking out the back, as well as countless home improvement materials. I even got two rooms' worth of laminate flooring boxes in the car once. I didn't think I'd make it home with the weight loading, but it all went well.

Yet another advantage over the Accord. Why anyone would get an Accord over a 6 baffles me. This is one nice car.

jaeger1: I was at the Toronto Autoshow yesterday as well. I enjoyed the 6 but found the 3 to be a horrible disappointment.

@phantasmic - I also have a 2004 Mazda 6 Wagon and I have had very little trouble with my car. I have had one broken door lock, which I attribute to my 11 year old son, and warped front rotors at 30K. the rotors were replaced under warrenty but it seems like this is a common problem with the OEM rotors. If I have to replace them again, I am going with aftermarket.
As far as space goes, 33 cubic feet (61 with the rear seats down), works just fine for me. And as a wagon goes, this was one of the better looking ones on the road at the time without having to go upscale for a Benz, Audi or BMW.

Baffles me, too. I could find precisely ONE thing I didn't like about the top-line model I sat in: some weird swirly faux-marble plastic trim around the shifter and lower console that was real heavy on the "faux". Otherwise I thought it was pretty damned nice from one end to the other, inside and out.
Re. dougtheeng - I hear you man, I hear you. The 3... oy....

The 3 is an abomination. As a current 3 owner, I am greatly disappointed in the redesign and the car seems worse in every conceivable way. According to IL's testing, it's actually slower than the current model despite the extra gear and power. The car is also a few inches longer but has no increase in interior volume. The only positive side are the memory seats, bluetooth and bi-xenons.

I'll jump on the bandwagon and hate on the new 3 too. My mom just bought an 08 3 and I love it. If I get a Mazdaspeed3, I'm going for a used 08/09 unless the new Speed is substantially better, at least enough to overcome the awful styling.
Also agreed that I see no reason to get an Accord over the 6.

Don't forget about Accord resale and reliability- basically the two things that preserve its place on the sales charts. Americans are VERY slow to change their minds and think outside the box which is why it may take 10 more years for Americans to figure out Mazda, GM, Ford and Hyundai actually know how to make midsize cars that can match or exceed Camry/Accord.
