2009 Hyundai Genesis V6: Genesis on the Tour

TOC-1.jpg

Just when you thought you'd seen all the Tour of California blogs, another one appears. I loaded the three-strong family into the Genesis -- no easy challenge given that the most recent addition is still only 11 months old. Those with kids know how much accoutrement kids this age require. And I wasn't going without the Super Stroller.

What's the Super Stroller, you ask? Hit the jump to find out.

TOC-2.jpg

That, friends, is the super stroller. And, oh yeah, behind it is the Genesis. Anyhow, thanks to an elegant redesign which accommodates large wheels, the Stroller can tackle any terrain. And it does so almost as comfortably as the Genesis managed to swallow it and every manner of kid-associated crap we brought along, including the world's largest convertible baby seat.

We also found a new use for the Genesis' trunk.

TOC-4.jpg

I let the Genesis stretch its legs on the way to San Diego County and was thrilled to find out its nav system allows one to set a destination while moving (Relax, maybe the wife entered the destination. Maybe.).

Hyundai's new sedan also has a superbly simple Bluetooth interface and is a quiet enough inside that the kid slept like, well, you know. It's also darned good looking. Just look at the thing. I'm not really a big sedan guy, either. That honor goes to Brian Moody. But the Genesis has won me over. It strikes a perfect balance between large and drivable. And it's not unwieldy or too soft.

The day was going swimmingly. Until, that is, this loser showed up and began heckling every rider -- hardly what they need when competing at the ragged edge of their physical ability. Sheesh.

Did Lance Armstrong push him onto the ground too? XD

that stroller's wheels are ridiculous. Wouldn't BMX-size wheels been good enough for any terrain that you'd actually encounter with a baby?

Low rolling resistance, right?

Ummm... if you have ever watched to coverage of the Tour de France, you will see that this type of "heckling", as you put it, is quite common during mountain portions of stage races, and actually helps motivate the riders upward. In fact, if you were able to listen in to the radio communications in the ears of each rider and their team's coaches, you would hear them yelling, motivating and "heckling" them just the same.

by the looks of things the random guy belongs at the NASCAR race. the sign wordage, the cutoff sleeves, the farmers tan (or in this case sunburn), the cutoff shorts cut way to short. you should have given him a map and shown him where he made a wrong turn.

It does look good. Especially in that top shot.

I bet at least one of the riders thought about "accidently" crashing into that moron.

That's a good color for that car. Very sharp looking ride indeed. Kudos Hyundai.

is that stroller rolling on 24s? those are some huge rims

Um, jackson611, that is more like a 'bikers' tan. I get the same thing after riding hundreds of miles outside in the sun. He looks thin like the bikers and the tan lines hit right about where a jersey and shorts would end. Granted his clothing choice is questionable..... ;)

vacagrande says:

07:02 AM, 02/24/09

Yep jackson, telltale bikers tan. The on/off switch where the shorts end is the key. Despite my best efforts I'm rocking the bikers tan as well... even in Florida it's occasionally too cold to get to the beach.

The first couple of pics are fantastic, great scenery. I have a feeling this car is going to do well here (and I admit I hope it will).

That stroller needs spinners.

You know guys, I think Josh is the 'Random Idiot'. Look at the picture with the baby. On the right bottom edge, you can see a white placard with red bold lettering on it!

BTW, I gotta agree, Genesis looks sharp in that color. BTW, how does the nav system compare to BMW's idrive? Can you guys do a comparo of the nav systems in the LT fleet?

vacagrande says:

Good eye... I didn't catch our (potential) fearless correspondent on Versus but they concentrated on the guys wearing antlers and speedos. And occasionally on the riders.

vacagrande says:

Also I have to know - did you wear the cutoffs to the stage or change when you got there?

joefrompa says:

This car is really growing on me.

Look at that trunk lid execution. Sheated goosenecks that are TUCKED into the top corners of the trunk. Look at that massive wide, tall, and low trunk opening.

That baby is adorable :) Congratulations. I can feel myself getting older and slowly opening up to the idea of having my own.

But the baby also gives a great perspective to the roominess of that trunk. Looks solid.

That stroller looks like it's ready to go bouldering. That thing is no joke man :)

I didn't realize they made 'em like that....now I'm looking forward to going shopping for a "trail-rated" stroller.

Good sighting of the sign in the trunk. Any response, Josh? haha.

I just priced out a genesis on hyundai's website out of curiousity.

Their options pricing and schematic is terrible.

$3000 for their premium plus package, which includes an upgraded stereo....then their technology package REQUIRES the premium plus package, and is another $4000 on top of that and it's first named feature is another....upgraded stereo?

$7000 for that? C'mon.

Hyundai learned a little too well from BMW/Mercedes/Audi.

Hyundai decided to keep costs down by limiting option combination's. What's wrong with that? The Premium Package is just fine with me because the Prem. Plus is just 18" wheels.

Awesome tan lines!!

joefrompa says:

10:46 AM, 02/24/09

To get navigation you need to have $7000 in options. And bigger wheels (which means more expensive tires, more road noise, etc.). Among other things.

It doesn't make much sense, unless you can order a la carte (a la BMW and others).

wobbly_ears says:

11:14 AM, 02/24/09

I agree with joefrompa on about options. Navigation shouldn't be a 7k option. Tying bigger wheels to the Nav option is not a smart decision, IMHO.

I think Hyundai would rejig their options for 2010 MY.

cx7lover says:

12:05 PM, 02/24/09

It makes perfect sense, people looking for the tech pack aren't trying to pinch penny's on the option sheet. So the extra 3 speakers and higher output, as well as the cooled driver seat, DIS and 18" wheels among other things are highly welcomed for 4K over the premium plus. It would increase costs significantly to allow totally change the options on this thing, who wants the tech PKG. without all of the stuff the premium plus comes with anyway?

tsy says:

12:25 PM, 02/24/09

The options packages keeps things simple. Honda has been doing it that way for years. Sure, I suppose BMW and MB allow you more flexibility, but you are paying a lot more!!! If all you want is the Nav there are always aftermarket options for MUCH less.

Besides, if you're saving thousands wouldn't you want all the goodies? :)

altimadude00 says:

02:16 PM, 02/24/09

TSY is right. Even in an Accord, getting navigation means at least a $2000 price premium over cars without the navigation.

Point -- You want the toys, you'll have to pay.

Either that or get the Genesis how you want it and buy a $800 portable nav.

"That's a good color for that car. Very sharp looking ride indeed. Kudos Hyundai."

I think it looks best in black. There's a shiny, new, black Genesis in sitting inside my local mall and I think it looks great. One time I noticed a couple of chaps who looked like they would have been most impressed by a Mercedes sporting chrome spinners walking by it. I overheard one of them say, "That's a nice car" as both of them craned their necks toward it while passing by.

I wonder if Hyundai would be pleased to know that thuggish teenagers approved of their car?

1487 says:

"It doesn't make much sense, unless you can order a la carte (a la BMW and others)."

Nissan, Toyota and others have been doing this for years. Just so you know, analysts praise the Japanese automakers for reducing options and eliminating consumer choice. I just read an article saying Detroit needs to do that as well and simplify things.

Only if they have cash or financing to actually purchase it or can convince someone else that they should buy one. Then don't think they'd care.
