2009 Ford Flex: Hit Me Baby One More Time

Flex-damage.jpg

The other day our 2009 Ford Flex took a shot in traffic. Not our fault. The damage seems to be cosmetic and limited to the plastic bumper cover, but we'll let you know how it all plays out. Body shop here we come...probably next week. Heck, maybe it'll just buff out.

I'd just try some wax on it, maybe save you a trip.

Yeah, give it a good wash go over it with some bug/tar remover. It might just end up with a little scratch.

I'm guessing the shop will say the entire rear bumper cover needs to be replaced and painted if you want it "done right." :(

It's a brand new car, get it fixed.

subytrojan is exactly right!!!! They will offer to "do it right" when it can probably be refinished a decent price.

Did the parking sensors beep when you got hit?

My father JUST did the exact same thing to my 06 Civic SI. Took off some paint, so it's not just "buff it out"able.

I'm going to see what they say to lightly sand and re-paint, but if it's more than $250 I'm just going to buy a whole new bumper and install it myself (new bumper is about $275, painted at the factory and shipped to me).

One thing this shows is that Ford is not using yellow bumper material anymore. I've noticed lots and lots of 80s-90s Fords with faded or peeled/scraped bumpers and the primer or base plastic material is a gawd awful yellow. Talk about not aging gracefully.

Uhoh, better get MAACO.

Aww. Poor Flex. Please get it fixed :D.

We'll have to replace the bumper to restore its original appearance. $1,500. What's your insurance contact information? Thank you for choosing us for your repairs.

Try some paint thinner. That is what a lot of auto detailers use to remove scuffs like that one. It won't harm the clear coat or paint if you just use a little bit with a rag. After that you can buff it with polish and then a wax. I bet that would take care of 90+% of it and save a lot of money.

If it isn't your fault, get it done right whatever the cost. Maybe it will teach the responsible party to pay better attention on the road. There should be a automatic $1000 idiot fine for people who cause accidents because they weren't payinig attention.

Ah so geographically dependent these cultural and social norms.

In Chicago, bumpers are made for bumping. I'm sure there's several other cities where bumpers are made for bumping.

What other cities do you people know where bumpers are made for bumping, instead of decoration?

I'm betting that it not as simple as a bumper cover replacement since it also has ultrasonic parking sensors. I will admit that I talk about people who have parking sensors and the rear bumper is scratched. I usually say something like "what part of BEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPP did you not understand."

"Did the parking sensors beep when you got hit?"

This was my first thought as well.

milt721 says:

Rear parking sensors only work when the vehicle is in reverse.

g8gtnorth says:

If for whatever reason they need to replace or repaint that bumper, they will have to blend the paint with the panels around it.

No accident is ever a simple fix unfortunately. This may be more expensive than some of you might think.

@g8gtnorth...

That's honestly the silliest thing I've ever heard. No body shop HAS to do anything if you forbid them to do so, nor have I ever heard of all but the seediest shops purposely touching a virgin original paint metal panel in all but the most EXTREME of paint matches just to match a bumper.

NEVER NEVER NEVER allow a body shop to paint on virgin factory paint if it is at ALL avoidable, INSTANT depreciation hit from paintwork.
