2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X MR: Are There Better Seats For $40K?

seat-555.jpg

Are these the best seats in a car under $40,000? Yes. Don't argue with me either. I know, I just sat in them last night.

They have bolstering that feels substantial enough to hold you in upside down and the upholstery is grippy in all the right places. And just look at them, they look cool too. They almost make up for that silly wing on the back.

I really wish Subaru offered Recaros in the USDM STI. I wonder if these would fit? Oh, and good luck getting an MR for 40K

They should put these seats in a Camry as standard. Just put plain cloth on them if cost is an issue. Base model.
I don't understand why all cars aren't built with seats like this.

I concur with Ed and will even go so far as to say these are among the best seats at any price.

If the MR's had power height/tilt/recline adjustment, then I'd say they're the best, period.

billt9-

Fat people.

I've also sat in these seats and loved them. They fit me perfectly, but I can see how they would not be comfortable for bigger people, of course then if it worked for everyone it would not be a good seat.

Recaro has upsized seats too, the reason those seats are rare is, obviously, the cost of the part and the cost of integrating them into existing platforms. Recaro's start at about $500 retail, I doubt many OEMs are flipping that kind of money per seat.

they should have these seats in the corvette zr1

there is one car under $40K has great seats! Although it is Recaro too

RX8 R-3 package, it feels as terrific as this one. It also seems it's the same as CTS-V's. Does anyone know?

LTo paraphrase Lee Iacocca: "If you can find better seats, buy 'em!"

They can't put them in the 'vette... too many owners wouldn't fit into the driver seat.

So, as waevox said,

"Fat people."

One of the big weaknesses of the modern vette: The seats.

When I sat in them at the auto show, in both the ZR1, Z06, and base vette, I noticed the tremendous lack of thigh support and side bolstering, and I'm 5'10 and 180 pounds. (yes, I was at an auto show where we were "allowed" to sit in the ZR1....and the Porsche 911 turbo for that matter)

Seats to me are as important as the steering wheel. If they don't coddle you just right, get out now.

Couldn't agree more. It's amazing that automakers put so much R&D into so many other aspects of their vehicles yet seat design seems so much like an afterthought. I'd overlook a multitude of other dislikes in a car if it has truly supportive seats. Being a part time valet supervisor, I've sat in a vast range of cars and found that only a handful actually make good seats. (BMW and the newer Infinitis come to mind....)

Even so, why is such a challenge to design OEM seats that are comparable to Recaros? What is Recaro doing that the majority of automakers can't figure out?

joefrompa says:

Mrryte - He is saying that Recaro offers different seats for different sizes....OEMs have to make ONE seat that fit all sizes, and do it within a constrictive budget.

I still agree with you.....please, if you haven't already, go sit in a $22,000 Honda Civic SI seat. My (then $20k) 06 Civic SI has some of the best seats I've ever nuzzled. Then again, if I was 30 pounds heavier, they might suck.

BMW Base seats on their 3-series and 1-series are some of the worst, BMW Sport seats on the same models are some of the best...(they are shared seats). At the same time, I like the Infiniti G regular seats more than their Sport.

Obviously it's at least difficult to design a seat well loved by all....but many manufacturers have done it, so it's possible. :)

I wish my Z06 had those seats. But, there are some nice aftermarket options I will be pursuing this year to replace my crappy stock seats. It'll cost me damned near $3k, but it'll be worth it to have nice seats that the car should've come with in the first place.

Aftermarket seats can be pricey, but so worth it. Especially in applications such as yours (2-seaters) where it's not as important to have a serious tilt functionality.

Good luck man :)

That's what I had to do with my 95 G20. The stock OEM seats were a pain after 3+ hours on the road. After installing a used set of Recaros (I got real lucky and got em both for $500) the difference is night and day. I can drive for hours with very little if any discomfort or stiffness.

My buddy has a Pontiac GTO, and like your Z06, it has great performance but the seats could be better. I've noticed the seats are short on thigh support and he can't even drive more than 90 minutes without his back hurting him...:-(

Joe-

The reason your seats feel so good is because Recaro is one of the OEM Manufactures for Honda. The Si and S2000 and other ceratin cars were built by Recaro.

lukemc01 says:

As for comparison, I like my Si's cloth seat over my S2000's leather/pleather versions. I don't slip as much.

The seats in my Z06 are actually very comfortable. I've driven in them 14 hours straight and I was still comfortable. The problem with the seats is they have very little side bolstering, so I slide around all over the place in the twisties. When I take the car on a road course or autocross it, the seats are a downright joke - I have to brace myself on my left against the door with my elbow, and on the right with my knee against the center console. There's no pass-thru in the seats for a 5 point harness either, which I want to install as well. The leather isn't that great either.

These are the seats I'm going to get (in all black, not yellow): http://caravaggiocorvettes.com/dev2007/g6_i5.html

stingray,
Those seats look great and of course have all the lateral support you'd want. I like that they perfectly match the car's interior and keep the six-way power adjustment. The only bummer is the fixed backrest (though that's typical for a all-out racing seat).
