2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X: Getting My Jollies During the Morning Commute

mitsuevox-004.jpg

There's nothing I dislike more than the morning commute to work...oh, except the commute home after work. And yes, I live just 7 miles from the office but during rush-hour traffic it feels like 50.

In any case, our 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X seems to make that stress go away as I'm able to get my jollies where I can find them on the way to work. There's that wonderful high off-the-ground freeway on-ramp with a 30-mph curve. Fellow motorists usually slow wayyy down for fear of losing control and flying off the ramp. Eesh. In the Evo, I just maneuver around them, the car's sticky tires hold me in place.

And then there's the long sweeping two-lane on-ramp to the 90 freeway. Usually people take the outside lane but I can just fly by them in the inside lane. Man, I love this car!

And in the picture above on a side street there's a pair of curves (first a right then a left) that I like to dance through. Sure, it's a rare occasion to have no one in front of me but when there isn't, I can take it at uh...a funner speed and imagine that I'm on a racetrack.

Unfortunately, this morning an irritatingly slow Mustang was taking those curves at 30 mph and even braking! The nerve! I wondered if he was braking because he was intimidated by the sight of the Evo in his rearview mirror. I even tried to back off to wait til he cleared the curves so that I could go at a fun pace unabated but then he just hit his brakes again. Ah well, next time.

I feel you. slow motorists can really suck the fun out of driving.

Agreed, especially when said motorists are in the left lane going 5-10 mph under the speed limit and leaving 3+ car lengths between them and the car in front. Had one of the aforementioned in front of me last weekend.

slow motorists suck, but if they can barely drive slow and not crash, why would you want them to drive any faster? the problem in the US is its too easy to get a drivers license. in finland, which is an extreme example, you need to practically be a rally driver to pass, lol.

I'v herd of the "drivers ed" classes in Finland. you've right, you have to practically be a rally driver to pass.

In Baltimore, the speed limit in a lot of places is 55. Come on! 55?! I think the speed limits should be raised to something more reasonable, like 90. or more.

I hate slow and fast drivers. The only good pace is the one I'm setting, lol. Don't slow me up and don't tailgate me.

One day I was wine tasting in the Santa Cruz mountains, and my friend was the DD that day with his E90 330i. He was going painfully slow and I resisted the urge to tell him to speed up. Eventually, this Prius caught up to us and I finally got to say, "Dude, you'd better speed up or you're going to get passed by this Prius." Thankfully, he did speed up and pulled away from the hybrid.

The worst is seeing someone in something supposedly sporty such as the Mustang pictured here, Porsches, and even M3s. Who are these people? Go get a Solara and putt putt in the right lane already.

haha, i agree that dual lane on/off ramps can be tremendous sources of fun. i'd also point out that there's a certain stretch of PA turnpike in a rural area of PA that may, in fact, be the most perfect stretch of highway ever created... major elevation changes, several changes in direction, no places for cops to sit, and often lightly traveled...

...assuming of course that it was a closed private course, i might suggest that double the speed limit is both possible and thrilling in a few german cars i've driven through.

Caroline, is it the inside line or the outside lane of that 90 FWY on ramp that has that horrible lip? Almost feels like you'll bend a rim.

caroscuro says:

desmolicious,
Are you talking about the 90 FWY from 405 south or from 405 north. In any case, I take the latter and hadn't noticed one, at least on the inside lane.

desmolicious says:

It's the 90 FWY on ramp from the 405 N. The inside lane is the one to take, the outside has a rising seam that is truly horrible.
Unfortunately most people are on the inside lane, going sloooow. Of course.

...7 miles from work? I never get past 3rd gear on the way to work...........for 45 miles.

One rainy morning I was driving my 1999 Wrangler Sahara to work and as I approached a decreasing radius on-ramp an incompetent fool in a C5 glued himself to my back bumper. Until we actually got on the ramp- at which point he slowed to a crawl and I left him behind. Moron. He deserves to be sentenced to drive an Aveo slushbox for the rest of his miserable life. Still, one of my favorite incompetent driver stories involves a mullet-head in a late '70s Z28 who tried to keep up with my '73 Bavaria on a twisting two lane one night. I left him waaayyy behind until we got to a long straight stretch- where the doofus thought he would finally catch me. Poor guy, he didn't know that there were two huge frost heaves about 300' past that last corner. Watching the huge showers of sparks as the Camaro's oil pan/front crossmember slammed into the pavement-twice!-was priceless.

I love getting a chance to take a fun run up GMR, but every day I have the opportunity to enjoy the greatness that is clover-leaf onramps. It is frustrating when you have a slow driver ahead of you blocking the fun. I agree 100% that it is too easy to get a license in the U.S. We spend all our time teaching traffic laws (which everyone ignores) but almost no time to actual car control. Sad state of affairs.

That SN95 v6 Mustang needed to slow down because they were terrible handlers.

I like the purple fingernail :)

I've always found the most fun in cars that can FEEL like you are driving them on the edge through the apex and still lay down full throttle as soon as you clip it. I love driving the Porsche Boxster, but it pretty much never feels like you are driving them on the edge (except when it had snow tires on it, and I found the edge much sooner than what I was expecting).

One of the problems I'm finally growing old enough to realize with alot of modern performance cars is that their edge unvolves such ridiculous quantities of speed that they feel boring during regular driving. A car that can feel exciting when you want and can settle down when you want while not involving complete idiocy is always nice :)

Hey caroline I also use walgrove ave. on my way to SMC. But that curve is very dangerous. once while driving by a car slammed into one of the houses and it was a terible accident. Keep your cool and always drive safe.

auto_guy,
Thanks, but yeah, I don't get too crazy. I don't drive faster than my skill level. I think I've seen that accident and I wondered how fast that person must have been driving that corner to wind up in the house.

The law of natural selection won out, I'd think.

Hmm...strange. I used to hustle my V6 Mustang around. Even had fun with an X5 4.4i on S****t before. Maybe the one in front of you was a 5 year old rental.

arm51: Heaven forbid you leave room to stop should the vehicle in front of you come to a sudden halt. Or swerve to avoid road debris.
