2008 Cadillac CTS: Still into it

track -jr.JPG

With about 26,000 miles on the clock, the Cadillac CTS is still a very good car. The front seat flaps Erin complained about are obviously a punt but it wouldn't keep me from buying the car.

So far I have just two issues with the car. 1) Once every other week or so, my iPod won't sync to the audio system. 2) I wish there was a thicker cover for the massive sunroof - I'd like the choice to totally block out the sun, as it stands there's just one thin cover. At times, it simply lets too much light into the cabin

Dynamically, the Caddy feels as tight as when it was new. The car's on board computer is now registering 22.4 mpg pretty much all the time - that seems fair for a sedan as quick and roomy as the CTS and considering it probably gets driven harder than the average CTS. Finally, I still like the exterior look, some cars with dramatic design elements can begin to look dated or unusual just a year into a redesign - not so with the CTS. What do you think, does the CTS still look good or is it already a relic?

I think it still looks great!

Question though - you said it still feels tight. Some tester a while back (I forgot who), claimed the CTS was a complete rattle trap, with rattles all over the place. I think that was a fluke though, as I had not seen any other posts or mentione of rattles on the CTS since.

So does the CTS rattle, or not? Let's set the record straight.

Weird about the sunroof cover. The cover in my mom's Trailblazer SS lets in no light whatsoever and the interior in that thing is nothing to write home about.

I still think the CTS is a fantastic looking vehicle. I was looking at a new black CTS-V that was next to me in traffic just yesterday and promised myself that somehow one day I'll own one. Just a stunning vehicle in my opinion.

Still looks good to me. I'll be comparing it to others at the Dallas show this weekend. Big plus - I can get it w/o the sunroof, unlike the 5er or the Genesis.

ipod synching issues seem to be very common in new cars. All of these ipod integration tools and bluetooth stuff sounds great but there seem to be a lot of reliability issues present.

The rear doors really bother me. The handle is in the wrong place. The coupe looks good though.

I think it looks better and better everyday, until I see some old guy driving one with white or burgundy paint, gold emblems, white-wall tires, and ragtop roof.

It actually is a car that looks somewhat decent with chrome....

Looks good, but red is my least favorite CTS color. Black = sexy. I'd take a black 3 Series or Infiniti G over a red CTS, but a black CTS over either of them (if that makes any sense).

Wonderfully executed design (in and out) by Cadillac as everytime I see one, my eyes follow it. The LEDs are cool at night, great design element.

Would look better in white.

Stingray - I've been driving this car for a week straight and I can honestly say I don't hear any rattles. Occasionally the pop up nav screen will make a noise when going up. I don't hear the rattles

davis - do you live in So Florida? I don't see that in Calif

Nice car. Wish GM had realistic pricing on them. At 30k I'd consider the DI version. At 34k, it's just too much for a car that's good but not as a good as a 3.

Hey blueguy, tell me again what 3-series you can buy for $34k??? Not even a stripped down 328i as far as I can figure. Certainly not a 335i, which is the only one that can truly compete with the DI CTS in terms of performance. For a decently optioned 335 you are looking at $48k+. Thats far more than a comparable CTS and the Caddy has a better interior, more goodies, and better overall styling to boot. If I hadn't been swayed by the G37S, I'd have gone CTS all the way...

Blueguy- what are you smoking? How the heck could Cadillac sell a DI CTS for $30k when the smaller 328i with 74 less horsepower doesn't even start at $30k?

Red is the worst color for the CTS in my opinion. While black looks nice in pictures I would never own a black car so that leaves me with blue, silver, white diamond or thunder grey. I hope I can find the one I want in the used car market next year.

majin_ssj_eric. The G37 is a hell of a value compared to the Caddy and 3 series. It would definitely be my runner up to the CTS if I were buying new. I just don't see how I could justify spending the money on any new version of the 3 series. They are simply overpriced and that is a fact.

I had a close look at a CTS this past week at the autoshow. Overall, I was pretty impressed. The red didn't look as bad in person as it does in most of the Edmunds photos. I also didn't mind the interior layout (I was expecting to continue to dislike the vertical vents). The interior was a little 'hard-plasticy' in places, but nothing really too noticeable. Overall I was quite happy with it.

Brian -

Thanks for clarifying this. Glad to hear it's rattle-free. I'm seriously considering picking up a new CTS-V in the fall. Rattles drive me crazy in a new car. Not that it would be a deal breaker for me on an otherwise great car, but it would certainly give me pause.

I think the car still looks great! My main issue with it is the seats don't have much side bolstering on the bottom cushion and the car is pretty heavy.

Chavis, Majin - I don't think the Caddy is worth more than 30k. Sorry. It was a nice ride but not great. A nice car too. I can see 30k new and 0%. It is american afterall. With that GM - Made in the USA thing attached to it - no I couldn't stomach paying that much for an American product. Japanese, korean, German...sure. But American? Nope, won't happen. They won't even lease the CTS because its residuals are so awful...

It's holding steady: the Caddy's as ugly as ever.

chavis10 says:

blueguy- So you are saying the CTS should not cost more than the Long Term Honda Accord? You are saying the CTS should be priced $10k less than the Long Term 370Z?

Good grief man. Could you be any more ignorant and biased? I hope you're not an American. If you are, you should hang your head in shame at your stupidity, and look to deport yourself. Do the rest of this country a favor, and LEAVE.

"They won't even lease the CTS because its residuals are so awful... "

That has nothing to do with it. Have you been living in a cave for the last 6 months? Do you know what state the economy is in right now? GMAC and many other auto finance companies dropped leasing programs on all vehicles. Not just the CTS. Leasing is coming back slowly though.

I have no problem at all plunking down $65k for a CTS-V, or $105k on a ZR-1. They're both American, and they're both fantastic vehicles. I would buy and drive them with American pride, and see import-loving freaks like you in my rearview mirror.

How many have you seen like that? I have seen none. I rarely saw such things on the first gen CTS although I have seen Lexus models with chrome wheels and gold trim. I've seen an Altima with a canvas style roof and rims too.

"Good grief man. Could you be any more ignorant and biased?"

I think his comments speak for themselves. He really believes its reasonable to exclude American cars from consideration because they are made here and/or branded by US auto companies. I struggle to understand how one wishes to be seen as credible when you flat out say that you judge cars primarily by country of origin. A V6 A4 costs $40k to start and he says a 304hp direct injected CTS should be no more than $30k. That isnt even rational.

Based strictly on price and performance the G37 is hands down the best buy in this class. Its pricing makes the 335 look absolutely overpriced.

"It's been about three months since I've been in our Long Term 2008 Cadillac CTS and I think that it's spent that entire time being driven over cobblestones. Even with the radio on, the slightest road imperfection causes the CTS to erupt with noise.

Here's a list of things that squeak or rattle in our CTS.

Driver seat (this is particularly bad when turning, braking or accelerating. Or entering / exiting the vehicle)

Passenger seat

instrument cluster (chrome surrounds buzz and rattle)

rear seats

sunroof

center console

Shift lever

Nav screen (intermittent when rising)

The driver seat-back also feels as if it's sagging down slightly to the right.

"Our Cadillac CTS's interior is noisy. It's fine when you're driving in a straight line. (Well, except for the wind noise.) But when you're making a turn the leather creaks loudly. You hear "Creak, creak, squeak creak." Read that part out loud, it's my best onomatopoeia...

I'm late to the party, obviously, but I really wanted to comment on this.

I bought my '08 CTS brand new in May of '08. I've spent the last week at Infiniti and Lexus dealerships, looking to get out of my car.

The car is most certainly a rattle trap (or as one of the major car magazines called it, Rattlesaurus,) and lately, on top of the rattles, it has become exceptionally unreliable. Since I've had the car, it's been back to the dealer 14 times... most for rattles, but some, lately, for more serious things like check engine lights that come with severe engine shaking, smoke pouring out the back, and a message that says Engine Power is Reduced while I can't even make it up a slight incline in 2nd gear. This car spends more time at the dealer than the dealer's employees do.

Just staying on track about the rattles, I get consistent rattling from the sunroof, the driver's seat, the rear passenger side deck, just under the rear window, the dash and of course, the very plastic-like silver colored covering that's around the nav, the ac/radio controls, cupholders, etc....

Overall, I'm so depressed about this car. I LOVE the features. I love the nav system, being able to pause and rewind the radio, and the iPod integration. But the rattles, the way the car thumps itself into oblivion with a huge thud over every single bump, and the unreliability, and going to force me into an Infiniti G37x.
