I've spent the better part of a week cruising around in the all-new BMW 750i, the flagship of the Bimmer line -- the big daddy if you will. There are certainly worse ways to spend time on the road. Then as fate would have it, I got handed the keys to the opposite end of the family, our long-term BMW 135i. I was going from the big daddy to baby Bimmer.
No longer would I have heated and cooled 39-way power seats. No navigation system with (surprise!) useable iDrive and 12-inch widescreen display. No HD or satellite radio. No rear steering. No adjustable suspension, steering, throttle or transmission settings. Speaking of transmission, I'd actually have to shift for myself. No habitable back seat with power sunshades. No leather upholstery and swanky stitched dashtop. No Black Panel super gauge cluster.
In other words, I was missing a whole lot of stuff. And yet (you knew this was coming), I was perfectly content.
There's something about stripping away all the distractions, all the electronic wizardry and 1,190 pounds of car that leaves you with a certain purity. There's a sense of connection with the 1 that the 7 has long since abandoned in favor of being a technological and engineering tour de force (and an impressive one at that).
Obviously, this was hardly going from 7 Series to Civic. But if it came down to a daily driver and I had the cash for either, I'd go for the 1. Maybe that would change as I get older and/or need that back seat, but I'll take purity over that huge list of doo-dads today.

I would choose the 7 Series only because I commute about 4 hours per day. I like small cars, but nothing beats a large comfortable GT car for long drives.

Fun little comparo of Techno Wizardry Vs. Back to Basics. That's why I like the 1er as well. Also why I like the E46 M3 like your long term test car or the one I own (Convertible).

7 series looks sweet. Probably the only BMW that seems worth the price IMO. I actually think the styling on the last version was a little better but the interior on the one looks much improved. Sign me up.

The new 7 series' snout seems extra pronounced compared to the old ones, probably the result of Euro pedestrian impact regulations. They look horrible.

Hey, great post!
I've always felt "simpler is better" when it comes to many things, including cars.
I'd like to know how the 1 series stacks up next to the 7 series...do you think you might address this at some time?
Thanks!

I would choose the 7-series because no stereo in a small car sounds as good as the stereo in a large car.
The acoustics in a small car just doesn't work.

allenychung- I think you've hit the nail on the head. I couldn't quite put my finger on what seemed odd about the new styling but it's the front fascia. I noticed the moved the front wheel forward too so the nose doesn't taper down anymore- it's just right there in your face.

This year's 7er is actually the first one I've really liked, at least styling-wise, engorged snout and all. But I appreciate Riswick's comments, even though having two kids precludes 1er ownership. That, and it's ugly.
sealclubb3r says:

Ugh, the new 7's face reminds me of the pink panther for some reason. Pretty much the only current BMW that's not ugly in my opinion is the Z4.

Is there a way to block BMW only blog posts??

No there isnt. Its not all BMW posts though. You have the R8, Evos and GTR in the rotation too.

I dearly loved the B7 that I drove for a couple of weeks, but I wouldn't pick one for a daily driver. The 1er is a perfect fit for me. The only thing I'd add is a limited-slip diff. While I'm wishing, I'd like to see a five door 135i M Sport. Having said all that, let me echo the concerns of some of the other automotive connoisseurs in this thread; when can we expect IL to start giving equal time to common and insipid four-wheeled appliances?

I fully understand this blog. When I got my BMW 3, I also looked at a 5. Price was not an issue.
Size and fun to drive is. Smaller and more fun to drive wins it for me.

I like to read posts about other LT vehicles & not just BMW/GT-R or Evo. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I propose 2 editions of IL.
1. IL-Wanker's Edition: Here all the juvenile editors & other of such ilk can act grown-ups with all these super-cars & boast how 'sporty' the ride is & what they want to be like when they grow up.
2. IL-Common Sense Edition: For other LT cars commoners can buy. Show the hits & misses of the design (interior & exterior), how it is to drive in normal traffic, quality of sound systems & navigation etc,

OK, nobody's talking about the elephant in the room, so I guess it's down to me:
Has anybody else noticed how every comment by Kissel1 follows a very specific format? Example:
"Excellent post about the [insert vehicle]. That was very interesting. But do you think you can tell us about [the exact subject that was covered in the post]?"
No offense meant to Kissel1...I figure it's either an "ironic" account, or just someone with peculiar posting habits!

misterfusion,
It's a common speech strategy that they teach you in school.
First you complement your target so they're flattered and is now more receptive. Sort of like you just did them a favor.
Then you ask for a favor in return.
Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
But that "sometimes it works" reaps you more rewards than the zero times it works of not trying.

I dont like the styling of the new 7 as it looks like a German version of a LS460.
I prefer the early 2000's 740i/750Li (blk/blk) with the Sport package as its just so James Bond.

Dear Mr. Chavis10,
We regret to inform you that the 2009 BMW 7-Series is not equipped with a dedicated "OFF" button for its independent-zone dynamic automatic climate control system. Like other BMWs, maximum inconvenience is incorporated into the design of every car, for enhanced customer discomfort. We understand you will now need to cross this vehicle off your list.
Regards,
The Quandt Family

I agree. Tomorrow Never Dies - great car chase.
I've never sat in a 7 but I've spent some time looking inside one at the dealership - looks quite nice (obviously) but its hard for me to even comment on the car as it is so grossly overkill for my car needs. I cannot even imagine owning it.

Having gone from an 07 335i (E90) to a 06 750i (E65) I can tell you the only things I miss from the 335i are:
* The fantastic power of the turbocharged engine.
* The ZF auto tranny that blips the throttle on down shifts.
* Being able to change car settings via the iDrive that require visits to the service dept to have changed.
* The 335i was easier to parallel park.
It would be hard to give up the drivers seat in the 750i to go down to the 135i.

I suggest you enhance my enjoyment of the site by vanishing. Do you work for Edmunds? Seriously, what is your problem. if you have a fleet of 20 cars you might as well post on all of them. Its common sense. Do you feel as though you get extra credit for brown nosing the bloggers? I do not get why you think these adults need your protection or defense. They are fine, no one is getting their feelings hurt.

yes, because any car that isnt a BMW isnt worthy of production much less any coverage here. competition is a bad thing, especially when no one needs anything not designed and built by BMW who has a vehicle for every need and desire. Could you honestly be concerned that there is a danger of too little BMW coverage here? You dont have to worry roadburner, that will never be an issue. Just skip the 20% of entries that are not about the GTR, R8 or BMWs.

Oh, just wanted to clarify, by Porsche I meant a 911 variant or a 987(c). Not a Cayenne with a VW sourced V6. That would be practical and therefore boring to read about, defeating the purpose of this car blog thing. Anyone else find it hard to be enthusiastic about boring cars? I mean, there is no better way of taking the "enthusiast" out of automotive enthusiast then reading about how versatile a Dodge Grand Caravan can be.
