2008 Smart Fortwo: Needs Clearer Lock/Unlock Symbols

smartkey-001.jpg

Something that always bugged me about our 2008 Smart Fortwo is the unlock/lock symbols on its keyfob. In the picture above you can easily tell the difference which symbol means to unlock or lock the car.

But....

smartkey-002.jpg

When you're in a low-light condition it's not so easy. That little gap in the unlock symbol isn't distinctive enough. This may not be an issue for most people, owners of this car will probably memorize which button does what but I have a terrible memory! And I can never get it. I always have to use my cell phone light to make sure I'm pressing the right button. Not fun when I'm in a dark garage, creeped out by my surroundings and just want to get in the car right quick.

The MINI uses a similar symbol, but its better differentiated and colored.

Yeah, see? That's a lot clearer.

This calls for a white permanent paint marker.

is the button on the right the hatch? Or is that what you push to answer your Smart car wht it is ringing? Could also be the button to push if you want a giant claw to come and take the Smart away.

whats the hurry to get in the car...its not going to protect you from anything, the bad guy will take both you and the car then, it'll fit into his pocket.

What really aggrevates me is that the buttons are the same size. I like one button to be bigger than the other so I can tell what I'm pressing in the dark.

The two buttons need to be flip flopped.

On my 2005 Toyota Matrix's fob, there are 3 buttons in the front: from top-bottom: Lock, Unlock, and hatch glass (panic button is at the back).

It looks just like this one:

Notice the little "nipple" on the lock button.

Similar to the "nipple" on sinman1's keyfob, my mom's Accord has a ride on the lock button to let you know that you are pressing the lock button. It's a good idea, because the nipple= lock, no nipple= unlock, and slightly recessed= trunk. No way to mistake those buttons. It looks just like the one in the middle and on the right in this picture (the other is a TSX key):

Maybe Smart should pay attention to other companies' keyfob designs.

Dang the no edit button! I meant "ridge" up there, and I meant to say "just like the one in the middle and on the left in this picture." Sorry about that.

It's not that big a deal - when you're driving the car every day, you get used to it. I think the issue here is the driver is changing cars fairly often.

My peeve with the key is it's HUGE. I never thought I'd see a keyfob that made my BMW key looks small.

tmanz, your comment made my day! :)

I'm a fan of the different size and shape of the Lock/Unlock buttons on my GM fob. It makes it easy to find the right button when it's in my pocket.

I can see a more annoying problem with the Smart's fob in the pictures. If I owned one of these street legal golf carts, that Panic button is right where I would put my thumb whenever I'm holding the key, and I'm sure it's really easy to push and therefore cause me much embarassment.

petrolhead, I own a Smart and that's never happened to me. I can't recall any Smart owner saying it has. My chief gaffe is when I switch to the ForTwo from my BMW, my foot tries to find the missing clutch pedal. ;)

Just a thought, but if you're in a hurry, you could always just use that really easy to find metal thing on the front of the key to open the door.

I find it slightly ironic that we've gotten so used to having a push button, that it seems more convenient to go through the fuss of getting out a cell phone and standing there analyzing the fob to determine which button is which instead of just using the key as a key.

The lock and unlock symbols should be white in color or at least have the unlock symbol have its padlock swung out like this:

-That's from a Hyundai Azera... I googled "hyundai key fob" and edmunds' blog came up.

Fadetoblackii, I've got bad news for you - it's gone farther than you though. The keyhole on the Smart isn't exposted - it's hidden under a plastic flap and that has to be pried away with something sharp to get to it. It's considered for emergency use only. They don't expect you to EVER use the metal key to get in the car.

The buttons are keyed by height: lock is the tallest, unlock is next, and the hatch opener is shortest.
