2008 Mitsubishi Evo GSR: New Power. More Speed.

launch 555.JPG

It turns out that increasing the brawn of our Long-Term 2008 Evo GSR project car made it faster.

In its earlier state of tune consisting of AMS intake and plumbing, intercooler, exhaust and reflash, Project Evo X was a very quick car. To refresh your memory, here's the lowdown on its previous performance:

Acceleration

0-30: 1.7

0-45: 3.1

0-60: 4.4

0-60 (with 1-foot of rollout like on a dragstrip): 4.1

0-75: 6.5

1/4 mile (ET / MPH ) 12.8 @ 107.2

And here's how fast Project Evo X went once it received Cosworth MX1 cams and dyno tuning by Road Race Engineering:

Acceleration

0-30: 1.3

0-45: 2.6

0-60: 4.1

0-60 (with 1-foot of rollout like on a dragstrip): 3.9

0-75: 5.7

1/4 mile (ET / MPH ) 12.3 @ 110.3

That, friends, is a whopper of an improvement. Can you say "scalded cat?"

And don't think we're going to stop there. Project Evo X still has room to grow, power-wise. In addition, other areas of its performance arsenal will be addressed before it is truly ready to take on the mighty GT-R.

We've already got the ball rolling on several of those fronts, too. You won't want to wander too far away in the coming weeks.

Wow, that's awesome! Those cams really kicked things up a notch... BAM!!! (that was my best Emiril impression if you couldn't tell)

How much has this cost so far?

lazyhater says:

The cams are good, as expected from Cosworth. But most importantly the tuning maximized all potential gain. The car is getting FAST!

What I want to know is, does the car still pass SMOG? Both tail pipe and visually. Demodding a street car just to pass SMOG is a pain.

Anyone else wish they had done something like this with the G8?

cah11705 says:

i do!
they need a new exhaust on the G8

aspman26 says:

agreed! let's see an M5 slaying G8!

and where's the video so we can hear those new cams in action?

great job so far!

Impressive stuff.

Btw, take a look on the internets boys, tons of really modified G8's out there already. Twin turbo's, superchargers, swapped cams, exhasut, you name it they're all out there. Don't think the times are *quite* as good, but the weight does hold it back some.

lazyhater says:

04:16 PM, 01/30/09

Not much you can do on the G8 unless you add boost.

On a naturally aspriated motor, intake/header/exhaust/cams/chip....done, on the G8 GT's LS2, that probably worth 40 hp, nothing too exciting.

lazyhater says:

04:19 PM, 01/30/09

I want to see BPU done on the new CTS-V and see how high it would go with simple mods, that should be a big gain. See if you can make it as fast as a stock ZR1!

g8gtnorth says:

lazyhater - by all accounts it's a bit more than that, but the point is well made. To get alot more out of the engine you need to move to forced induction.

huyracing says:

being able to pass smog is nice, but it is a new car so you have 6 years before your first smog check in CA. most people i know with EVO's dont even own them for that long. IL is probably not holding onto it for that long.

there's a few good options out there if you want to stay legal. the main issue is with newer cars it takes a while to get CARB certification and even though it is pending, many cars never do get approved. many manufacturers know it wont pass and still do so for marketing's sake. So, buyer beware.

srlracing says:

As an enthusiast always battling CA smog I would like to know if this would pass smog, because a car that will not pass CA smog is worthless is CA.

iancar says:

12:21 AM, 01/31/09

Regarding the CA smog check, can you kind of turn off the turbo and install a new chip set during the check, and then retuned everything after the test is done? Is that legal?

fadetoblackii says:

06:32 AM, 01/31/09

lazyhater-

why not put a forced induction on it? A twin-turbo G8 with suspension upgrades=win.

cah11705 says:

does insideline actually own the g8 that they can do that?

1speedbike says:

WOW! I'm so glad IL checked in a tuned car into the long-term collection, rather than the usual stock cars.

As a cool comparo, you guys should buy the 135i after you're done with it and tune it like this Evo. I've heard of Juice Box 3 tuned 335i's hitting the 60 mark in 3.5 seconds. I'm wondering what the 135 could do.

At what RPM did you launch the Evo to get your best times? I imagine I'll be seeing a new clutch on the mod list soon!

I wasn't on board with modding the car further, but after seeing the results, I would like to see what else you can do with it.

Humorously, after an initial outburst of hate for this car due to it being here x2, it seems the blog crowd has grown to drool over it's quick-speed potential.

To me, this is symbolic of the way I used to hate "rice burners" back in 2000 and have since grown to respect their tunability.

Just went to the black tie gala philly auto show on Friday. My buddy, all-american to the point of getting 1" from an Audi-guy's face and telling him his mind, said the following:

"I actually want a *pfft, cough ahem* Hyundai Genesis Coupe.".....he included the pfft, cough, ahem :)

I saw this entry after I came back from WalMart. Sitting alone in the parking lot was a gunmetal Evo. I was actually surprised by how good it looked, although I still think the wing is horrifying.

g8gtnorth says:

Joe, I think the initial disdain for this car is that this blog is first and foremost a stress test for stock vehicles. It's a cool experiment, and shows a different side of car ownership, but doesn't fit with the general vibe of the blog. I'm imagining that's why they bought two. Deep down we're all sucker for more "POWAH!"

As a side note, why is it that people with stock Lancer's act as though they drive Evo's? I had a guy in one tail me shooting me dirty looks for 10 minutes and acting like a big cheese. Pretentious... He went looking for a dig and he found one. I like waving to these bums as I leave them far behind... in the snow no less.

After seeing these reports, i'm convinced that this is one of the best tuners on the market. Now i'm particularly interested in owning one...

" want to see BPU done on the new CTS-V and see how high it would go with simple mods, that should be a big gain. See if you can make it as fast as a stock ZR1!"

Look on YouTube - there is a video of a new CTS-V with just a pulley swap, cold air intake, cat-back exhaust, and dyno tuned making 610 hp, and it's running 11.8's in the 1/4. Hennessey did the car - it's for sale on ebay too (too much money though).

Anyway, back to this Evo - I'm surprised the 1/4 mile trap speeds are still so low relative to the ET's. I mean isn't this car running close to 420hp? For reference, my '02 Z06 when stock with 405hp, 353 rwhp, ran 12.4 @ 117 mph, so about the same ET's, but a much higher trap. Trap speed is a pretty good indicator of horsepower and power-to-weight ratio.

So what's the deal with only 110 mph trap?

joefrompa says:

10:04 AM, 02/ 2/09

AWD Stingray, you get a little bit better times with lower trap speeds on AWD cars than RWD or FWD.

I do still think the trap speed is probably 2-3mph lower than it should be though. According to that, it dropped .5 seconds in the quarter mile but only has a 3 second faster trap? That's pretty odd.

I previously asked Jay and he confirmed that the project Evo GSR isn't smog-legal.

Edmunds purchased the Pontiac G8 GT and BMW 135i for evaluation (the manufacturers did not provide them such as the other vehicles...if you scroll to the bottom of each vehicle's long-term road test introduction, you can read this for yourself). I don't know if they plan to keep them beyond a year and mod them. I suppose ya'll could lobby for it if you really wanted to see that.

spdracerut says:

12:29 PM, 02/ 2/09

Stingray, you said it yourself; power:weight. The Evo is big heavy car. It has low ETs because it gets out the hole hard (low 60' time) due to AWD. AWD and street tires can cut 1.6-1.8 60ft wheres as RWD car is generally in the 1.8-2.0 range depending on how good the driver is.

jazket says:

07:07 AM, 02/ 3/09

^^ Yeah it's definitively a power:weight ratio. Your 02' Vette should be around 31 hundred pounds. That GSR is still 200+ pounds heavier. And I really doubt it's doing 420 horses; no way. 350~365 at the wheels is my bet. Edmunds, correct us if either one of us is wrong. But I say it cause I'm used to the amount of horse/torque gains with bolt-ons on the newer X and it's usually around 70+ horses to the wheel with a fine tune plus a stock Evo gives out about 245-255hp.

Also Edmund's car is now real close to the X HKS FQ-360 UK version with those numbers.

Heck, doing 3.9 w/ 1foot rollout and 1/4 at the low 12's, I'll take it to the drag strip every single day :D

Nice!!!

mlin says:

The Evo X weighs around 3500lbs so that's part of the reason it's not putting out the trap speeds you'd expect. Regardless, this car should be trapping more like 112-113 mph. I've seen Evo X's with much less mods than this one and trap in the 110's.

mlin says:

06:10 PM, 02/ 3/09

Here's an example. Edmunds tested the Vishnu tuned Evo X which just had an exhaust and tune. This car ran 12.7 @ 109mph.
