2008 Cadillac CTS: Detroit to Los Angeles Part III

08.cadillac.cts.roadtrip.26.jpg

We were going to, but then we remembered that the CTS is not an E85 drinker. Neither is the X5. But through states like Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, E85 is all over the place. Back home in California we see thousands and thousands of Flex-Fuel Tahoes and Yukons around, but in Los Angeles E85 is like good Chinese food; it's just impossible to find.

I disagree with your analogy. There's good chinese food in LA. You just have to have a Chinese mother-in-law who can find it for you, like I do. :)
For instance, great restaurant called, if I recall, simply "Ocean Restaurant." Spiciest kung pao shrimp this side of the international date line.

Finally, I have found what my tiny town in Northeast Ohio has in common with the mighty Los Angeles: both our Chines Food restaurants suck!

Oh Scott, great Chinese food in LA is, fortunately, a dime a dozen! You need to spread your wings a bit

I'm in agreement with Oldham, LA's Chinese food is bad. About the only good place I've been was in China town. Other than heading there the city is dry. I always thought that was wierd since you can get awesome food from just about any other asian persuation here.

LA is also the only place where people seem to like Panda Express. There just aren't better options available. (PE is nasty)

I'm skeptical that a non-Chinese auto journalist can be trusted as an authority on Chinese food.

Scott - today is Chinese New Year. Go out tonight at 7PM and look for the Chinese restaurants where it will take 1 hour or more to get a table. Those are the good ones (at least according to the local Chinese population).

I'm OK with Panda Express, it's not any worse than the other ones with all the nasty stale sh*t they let rats feed off of. I've seen more than my share of Chinese restaurants closed down because of that.

Using E20 probably won't hurt. I know Escape Hybrid owners have experimented with blends of fuel, and E20 actually increased fuel-efficiency.

And, btw, the entire San Gabriel Valley is covered in Chinese eateries.

Here's a start - xiaolongbaos from Din Tai Fung in Arcadia:

i'm chinese and i live in LA. the reason why you don't find any good chinese food is because they are all in the suburbs, e.g. alhambra, monterey park, san gabriel, arcadia, rowland heights, irvine etc. no one ever goes to china town except tourists and people who don't know any better!

are there any Chinese left in Chinatown? Panda Express is Chinese food? Some people are really missing out on great Chinese food avail in LA...

empowah-

I would love to know how scientific that fuel efficiency test was with E20, seeing as ethanol has less energy in it than petroleum-based gasoline; there's also the whole melting rubber seals issue.

deagle13 - I wish I could, but in our town of 12,000 we only have a Chinese buffet and a take-out joint, neither of which is barely more than acceptable. If we drive 50 minutes through the farms and countryside, we can arrive in Akron or Youngstown, not exactly hotbeds of Chinese food either.

Tack on another 15-20 minute drive and we arrive in Pittsburgh or Cleveland, and now you're talking!

Something wrong with Yang Chow in Chinatown?
What about Empress Pavillion?
Ocean Star in Monterey Park?

Move out of the Westside. There's nothing of value over there......
