2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR: Distance to Empty

Here's a post on the GSR which was delayed one week because of technical difficulties. Ignore the mileage.

The distance-to-empty warning is one of the most useful and tempting technologies in any modern vehicle. That is, until it isn't. Here's what the EVO GSR's DTE display looks like when one keeps driving after the display hits 30 miles to go. Notice there's still one bar of fuel remaining on the digital gauge.

And here's what that display looks like when the last bar of fuel disappears. This, apparently, means you really need gas. I know this because I'm one of those people who likes to push it when it comes to refueling. Dumb, I know. And believe me, my wife hates it more than any commenter here possibly could.

Still, in a BMW, the DTE reading will go all the way to zero, which is far more useful. Don't ask how I know.

It's fun to challenge the fuel light. Until you run out of gas. Worth it?

so how many times have you had to walk to a gas station because you trusted too much in a DTE readout???

when the BMW hit 0 did it sputter to a stop?

Bah. I've taken an Acura down to 0 and then to -- ("dash dash"). Still had enough to go 2 blocks and into the gas station up to the pump all without sputtering. I've also put 18.2 gallons into an 18 gallon tank without having to walk/push.

Very recently, I've talked to two Prius owners who have run out of gas, with one of them doing it 3 times! I think the DTE and idiot gauge warning lights on Priuses/Prii need to be more noticeable! Ha!

With so little gas in your tank and the amplified effect changing driving patterns while running on fumes has, there's no way those things can be accurate at near-empty. Mitsubishi is smart and avoiding having dolts who rely on the DTE display rather than common sense complain because they ran out gas before it read 0 or had miles to go when it read 0.

Dude, just buy some gas!

My wife does this. Gives me the car to pick up my daughter with no bars. Then I have to stress out until I get to the gas station.

If it says REFUEL, just REFUEL! Who cares exactly how badly you REALY need to refuel to the last 1/10th of a mile.

I won't go on and on.

No comments yet about how dumb it is that the DTE doesn't count all the way down to "0 miles remaining"? Oh wait, it's an Evo, not a GM car ;)

I prefer the old analog gauges, where when down really low and you took a sharp corner one way the gauge went up to quarter of a tank, or a corner the opposite way...the gauge went well past the 'E'. Fun times taking only left turns to get to the gas station

I was thinking the same thing. A few weeks back we heard how it was unacceptable for a trip computer to stop offering exact numbers until the tank was empty.

I always fill the tank up when I hit a quarter left. No reason to let it run any lower.

I've found BMW's range to be very accurate. Only one time has it gone to --- and that was after it was in for a rear end repair after an accident...it was lowish when I took it in and they drove it after repair. I had .2 gallons left based on when I filled up. *gulp* I've never gone that low before or since, but I do appreciate its accuracy and found the same to be true on my previous BMW and a friend's 330Ci we took half way across the country.

I'm with dougtheeng. I was taught to treat the last 1/4 mark as "E" when learning how to drive, and that's stuck with me. I've never run out of gas, that I can remember.

I've gotten the gas down to E several times in a few cars. Some times I've done that just to test the "low fuel" light to see if it still functions. I swear the level at that light turns on goes down as the car ages...

I typically fill up at 1/8th of a tank left, unless I'm on a trip or something. My BMW makes it easy to fill up at 1/8th (that's about when it starts complaining about having about 50 miles left).

I was always taught to keep at least 1/4 tank of gas in my car so that I could get reasonably far if I needed to leave as a result of fires, earthquake damage, or any other disaster LA could offer. I guess Josh never got similar advice.

BTW, why is the "service engine soon" light on?
