Long-Term Road Tests

Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

2009 Nissan GT-R vs. 2009 Nissan 370Z

370Z-1.jpg

Sorry about the grainy pics, but a little elf just delivered a bright red 2009 Nissan 370Z with a 6-Speed manual transmission to our office. It will be at the Inside Line 370Z unveil party tomorrow night (I hope to see everyone there.) and track tested next week.

All good right? Not quite. Looks like I have a decision to make. A tough decision. Do I take the 370Z home for the weekend or our long-term 2009 Nissan GT-R?

What would you do?

I'd take 370z for sure. It's one of the most anticipated cars of the year!!!!!!

I agree. You'll be one of the first people to drive it!

louiswei says:

06:57 PM, 11/14/08

I'll take the M3 home...

The 370Z is ugly, oh well, at least it's not fugly...

By the way, did anyone notice that the 370Z has almost exactly the same wheel as the '09 IS2/350? I wonder who copied who. Here's the picture for comparison:

I'd take the 370Z. the GTR is great but it's a long term car and will be there for a while while the Z will be gone soon.

blueguydotcom says:

GT-R. 370z is worthless.

orangutan says:

07:14 PM, 11/14/08

Take the new one home.

bimmerjay says:

07:19 PM, 11/14/08

I'd take the Nissan.

huyracing says:

07:52 PM, 11/14/08

you put it next to an ugly super sized car like that and it looks small and sporty. i'd drive the Z to see if its performance actually redeems its ugly looks. (like its GTR bretherin)

lostandfound08 says:

09:40 PM, 11/14/08

The 370z might have a better chance of remaining functional the entire weekend.

haub says:

11:31 PM, 11/14/08

Compare and contrast the chassis feel. Take the 370z.

ddark13 says:

11:31 PM, 11/14/08

I'd take the new 370z home only if I've already driven the GT-R >5 times and would have it as an option in the future. Both very desirable cars tho

"I'd take the Nissan"

Uh, both are Nissans.

toyzm says:

I love the 370z rims!! Wait... don't they just look like Audi A5's?

estreka says:

02:34 AM, 11/15/08

In those photos, I almost can't tell the difference between the 370Z and the old 350Z. Are the differences noticable in person? Strange, it looked so good in silver.

equ says:

04:34 AM, 11/15/08

Spot on toyzm. They look like the a5 s-line rims (which in turn look like some kind of lambo gallardo wheel from a couple of years ago).

370Z, sure it's not the super car, but it's the fresh face.

hondacura4 says:

05:36 AM, 11/15/08

Im not a huge fan of Nissans but Id take the 370 home as Im soooooooooooooooo tired of hearing about the GTR.

"By the way, did anyone notice that the 370Z has almost exactly the same wheel as the '09 IS2/350? I wonder who copied who."

Very similar wheel design Louiswei but Audi has had a similar design since the introduction of the Audi S5 3.2. In the end its not who copied who its about execution.

You got the 370Z for (maybe) 2 weeks, the GT-R for a year. Should you really ask?

Take the Z. The GT-R will prolly be in the workshop again.

sabastian says:

06:30 AM, 11/15/08

"GT-R. 370z is worthless."

Ouch. Why do you say that?

felonious says:

06:52 AM, 11/15/08

I'm surprised nobody noted the ironic sequential license plate on the GT-R. :)

ih8hyundai says:

07:52 AM, 11/15/08

Leave both and hop in the CTS.

bobfranks says:

08:25 AM, 11/15/08

I would take the M3 home.

tinyelvis says:

08:52 AM, 11/15/08

Whenever I'm asked at the rental car service desk which of two similar vehicles I would like, my standard answer is: the one with the fewest miles in it.

I am constantly amazed at their reaction to my answer. It ranges from 'way cool, dude" to "that's genius!"

Therefore take the 370Z. It will make you appreciate the GT-R that much more.

the_big_al says:

09:48 AM, 11/15/08

ha - if only I had such decisions to make. Hmmm.... which gofast car needs to be abused tonight. What a choice. But in any case, take the Z. It really does have a better chance of staying together plus it's "all new!". You'd get to be the first to drive it!

allenychung says:

09:50 AM, 11/15/08

Tough choice, I'd take the 370Z though, just because it's new, and the GT-R will be around some other weekend.

redwoodaggie says:

09:54 AM, 11/15/08

That's easy, go with the 370Z. The GT-R will be around for a while.

cartester16 says:

11:03 AM, 11/15/08

Go with the 370z. It's not as ugly as the GTR, and still has more performance than any person needs on the street. Probably more involving and fun to drive in the canyons too, without all the auto-pilot gimmickry of the GTR. Maybe I'm too old to appreciate the GTR's video-game hype, but frankly, the car just doesn't appeal to me. Give me an old Miata for a run down Decker Canyon road any day! Fun at any speed is what a sports car should be.

cah11705 says:

11:57 AM, 11/15/08

take the z
its rarer than the gtr

cx7lover says:

12:31 PM, 11/15/08

The Z looks soooooooooooooo bad.

mbtech208 says:

02:05 PM, 11/15/08

Take the white Toyota Tacoma parked next to the GT-R.

greenpony says:

04:58 PM, 11/15/08

Did you really get back in the Z and turn the wheels for your different photo angles? Now that's obsessive... or maybe good attention to detail. I can't decide.

desmolicious says:

05:27 PM, 11/15/08

Hey, who's ridin' that Kawi KLR650? Any oil consumption issues? I like that bike.

elfjon says:

05:54 PM, 11/15/08

i'd rather have the X5

anilpunjabi says:

06:15 PM, 11/15/08

all i have to say is take the lady in red home - she is def a little spicier ;)

mozzz77788 says:

07:38 PM, 11/15/08

370z, it naturally handles well with less technology

cah11705 says:

09:15 AM, 11/16/08

i would hope the z has more driving spirit than the technologically advanced gtr

brian60 says:

03:18 PM, 11/16/08

""I'd take the Nissan"

Good point, take the coupe home.

I agree plus the 370Z might be more dependable than the GTR.

coletrickle says:

04:46 AM, 11/17/08

GTR is a piece.

And it's already yesterday's news.

370Z is a car that actually makes sense in terms of its pricing.

dougtheeng says:

05:56 AM, 11/17/08

Visually, the 370Z is a huge disappointment - looks like a face lifted 350Z. We waited how long for this? Weak.

elbee says:

07:12 AM, 11/17/08

God the 370Z is even uglier than the GT-R.

1487 says:

07:18 AM, 11/17/08

Neither car is that attractive. If you arent wealthy I'm sure your only choice would be the Z. I am starting to wonder of Nissan can truly design an attractive car. The Altima is the best thing they have from a design perspective.

langjie says:

08:31 AM, 11/17/08

so which car did you take? even though I love the GT-R, I would take the Z just because you'll be the first on the block to be driving one.

actualsize says:

08:38 AM, 11/17/08

Take the 370Z. After all, we have the GT-R for a year. And it's red.

bimmerjay says:

09:45 AM, 11/17/08

""I'd take the Nissan"

Uh, both are Nissan"

Good point, take the coupe home."

More specifically, the one with the V6.

louiswei says:

09:50 AM, 11/17/08

I'll take the one with 4 wheels...

ddoouugg says:

05:49 PM, 11/17/08

I would take the 370z cause its new and you can always get the gtr later. I was there and i loved the new Z.

estreka says:

03:11 AM, 11/19/08

Go classic. Take the one that's been around for over 30 years.

guding says:

02:35 PM, 03/14/09

I would take Nissan GTR Premium. It wins every race from 370z. I can drive in the city with normal mode and racing with R mode and I can drive in bad weather with GTR. And I can drift with stability control off and drive fast without stopping using R mode and normal stability for turning. I can drive in bumpy road using comfort mode and normal sports car on normal mode and stiff suspension using R mode. It has bright headlights. Its quiet. Its AWD. Its big and heavy for downforce/grip. It has more. Thats why I would take Nissan GTR.
