Walking back to the car from the grocery store on Halloween night a light glinted off the engine from inside the scoop. I had forgotten that the scoop on this thing is actually functional.
The more I looked at it, I noticed is was sans any kind of protective mesh on its face. It had the potential of gulping small birds or children that had gotten in its way.

It actually looks mean in this picture, I like it!
I wonder if it has mesh down inside somewhere?

The worst part was the body of the bird, along with all sorts of blood, bounced off the windshield.

So far, no birds or leaves in my '09 Forester XT.
I asked Subaru about adding a screen to protect the intercooler, and their response suggested they were wary about it blocking the airflow more readilly than the current setup. No idea how they tested this but the comment was interesting.

Much bigger than the scoop on the MINI.
