2008 smart fortwo passion coupe: Service

smartdealerblog.jpg

Smart of Beverly Hills couldn't schedule an appointment until next Wednesday. That is, except for one 7:00am appointment on Friday morning that would see our car returned "no earlier than 4pm". Forget that.

I made a quick call to the smart center of Universal City--closer to my house anyways-- and they could take me the same day. Funny how a change of only a few miles translates to vastly different realities...this dealership, as opposed to the ones here in Santa Monica, is selling smarts at MSRP.

The dealership is under construction and I drove by twice. When I finally got there the smart was whisked away almost immediately with a promised return time of 1-hour. I was waiting on this one so I really hoped they 'd stick to that. 45-minutes later I got the call that the service was complete and I could pick up the car.

The damage was $210.93 for an oil change and routine checks. This proves once again that the smart is in only an economy car in build quality. I want to like this car but it's getting harder every day.

$210 for an oil change! And what were the routine checks? Is the engine still there? Does the transmission still suck?

Wow. Just wow. I can find Porsche Boxster oil changes, at Porsche mechanics, including 10 quarts of $7 a quart oil and an expensive filter, and all routine checks....

for $150.

Smart car? Or Super car?

Joe

When I voted a few days ago, I parked behind a Smart with two giant Obama stickers on it. I can't think of any more apt symbolism.

$210??? what all did they do? Swap out the engine? :)

What does that thing take a quart and a half of oil?

I can't believe you guys agreed to that. Did you question it at all? Turn in your car enthusiast card and wait a year before reapplying.

What do they charge $270 an hour for labor?

Wow... just... wow.

"This proves once again that the smart is in only an economy car in build quality."

Post the breakdown on the bill. Otherwise this isn't Smart's fault if you just smile and agree to whatever the service writer wants to charge you. Was one of the lines on the bill marked "Breakfast for all the techs".

If only there was a site online where you could check to see what services were really required :)

I know they are under construction but that entrance looks like a strip club :P

That is funny. Joefrompa's post wasn't there when I read the blog but we had the exact same reaction.

Ouch! That's like getting the oil changed on a diesel pickup. Well, I guess that dealer has to make back all that money they're spending on the new building :) Service pays all the bills for the front end of the dealer anyway.

stingray454 says:

Under construction? That dealership looks like it was burnt. I though some anti-environmentalist torched it or something.

How much oil does the Smart hold? It's probably only like 3 quarts for that little engine. Which makes that oil change among the most expensive ever probably on a per quart basis.

The whole staff is at SEMA and you still get stuck with the Smart? You are pretty low on the totem pole.

Do you guys do normal stuff that people do, such as ask how much service costs before you hand over your vehicle? Wow.

subytrojan says:

Oooh! smarts at MSRP! May I get some common sense for that price, too?

Nice :)

must have hurt spending 45 minutes bent over that barrel.

daddiod says:

If MSRP was $5000-$7000 I would consider getting one of these little useless marbles...otherwise I refuse even to categorize this thing as a car.

mercedesfan says:

Lest we all forget, the Smart is a Mercedes-Benz product and thus uses its parent company's 10,000 miles service intervals which are going to be more expensive than the usual 5,000 or 7,500 mile intervals. That is still a ludicous amount, though. I paid only $60 more than that for my S550's last service visit.

ardaproes says:

Wow 210$ WOW
For that price i could change all the belts on my Mazda + oil change

What are they gonna charge for the similar work for this car ? Probably somewhere around 2000$

I think when they named the car Smart, they were being sarcastic

Tmaz is completey right. Post the breakdown of the bill. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a while and I would absolutely REFUSE to pay that price. You didn't ask how much it would be before you brought it there?

s197gt says:

02:10 PM, 11/ 6/08

For $210 you'd better damn well expect not to have to wait. I mean, holy camoly, who would let a $210 OIL CHANGE walk out the door?!

Service Manager: "Yes sir, we can get you in..."

(Looks around for a warm body...)

"You! What do you do? Receptionist? I don't care, change this man's oil right this second damn you!"

Good grief that is so absurd... I'll just leave it at that.

cocarguydj says:

mercedesfan,
I can appreciate that 10,000 mile service intervals have the potential to be more expensive than a shorter interval. However, check out the other post for the G8, which received its first service at just over 11,000 miles for ~$35. Somehow I doubt that the 3 quarts of oil for the Smart cost that much more than the nearly nine for the G8. Regardless of the make of the car or the service interval, $210 is absolutely ridiculous for an oil change and basic inspection.

cx7lover says:

06:33 PM, 11/ 6/08

WOW.

$40 for an oil change on my Mazda.

When it FINALLY hits the fan that the Smart is overpriced, and seriously underachieving, sales and resale value will plummet like it has in Canada.

"That is funny. Joefrompa's post wasn't there when I read the blog but we had the exact same reaction."

That's because "Wow. Just wow." seems to be the Official Long-term Blog Catch Phrase.

Dang. The last oil change I had for my 325i -- at an indy shop, no less (hint hint Edmunds) -- was $52.
Wow. Just wow.

I called around before hand and knew what this was going to cost.

The service was $290 at Beverly Hills smart.

But specifically what did the service include?

pat1usmc says:

I don't think they're going to tell us. It must be top secret.

tmanz says:

08:24 PM, 11/ 7/08

"It must be top secret."

maybe it goes back to my comment about the place looking like a strip club. The $210 got them an oil change and a couple of lap dances :)

Now there's something that the service departments could add.
