Dear Lord,
Thank you very much for our long-term 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X MR. Thank for its state-of-the-art dual-clutch transmission, its turbocharged engine and its active differentials. Thank you for its remarkably smooth ride, huggy seats and perfectly shaped steering wheel. We are truely blessed to have it in our fleet. And for this gift I promise not to covet my neighbor's wife.
Oh, and by the way, lord. I don't want to seem ungrateful, but can we lose the Evo's wing next time? All it does is block my rear vision and make it look like I'm driving my son's car, that is my son with several piercings and absurdly baggy pants.
Amen.--Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief

The trouble with the Evo is the generation that loves the look could never afford the car.

On top of that, the insurance premium is a killer for 16-22 years old on the EVO.

What is with all these spoiler hatin' posts?

Perhaps you all can arrange for a trunk swap with a Lancer GTS of the same color. :o)
Sweet photo, Scott (Jacobs) or Kurt!!!

That's not a bad idea, subytrojan. I bet all the kids driving base Lancers would love to have an Evo spoiler, and the older generation driving the Evos would love to get rid of it. Problem solved!

IMHO, the whole back end of the car is a total letdown. It looks agressive up front, decent in profile, and totally ridiculous from behind. It's not just the spoiler that's the culprit either. The tall, narrow rear end, the almost completely vertical backside and the awkward tail lights all play a part too.

So, what will happen if I simply detach the spoiler from the trunk lid? Any sample pictures? Just curious.

The spoiler is necessary to complete the look of the back end of the car. If you haven't seen a Lancer w/o a spoiler, go have a look. imo, it looks unfinished.

The GTS also has a spoiler (albeit a slightly less obnoxious one). I wouldn't mind it without any spoiler at all. Althought the ES with appearance package has a very small "lip" spoiler that would be just right.
Or for goodness sake, just unscrew it and have some body shop fill the holes and match the paint for $100.
Beautiful photo, BTW. Love those wheels too.

To doug, I think it looks quite nice with no spoiler at all. The shape of the trunk is adequately "sharp". I saw many previous generation Evo's without spoilers and thought it looked great. It would be a little less flamboyant, but there are certainly enough other visual cues that it was something special. The rear valance is paricularly cool.

The giant wing is one of the turn offs for me and my fiance. It definitely needs A wing, but not one that big. I have a friend that swapped his STI trunk lid with the giant spoiler for a spoiler-less WRX lid from another person, so it can be done.

that picture is fantastic.
dodo2 says:

If one would be serious about buying this car and the only drawback would be the wing, I'm sure that person wouldn't have a problem to replace the trunk lid with a non-wing one and sell the original wing/trunk lid for a small profit. This is a non-issue IMO.

Unless you are on a track and really need that wing's downforce, why not have the option of removing it? Or just make it a dealer option?
If Mitsubishi in future makes Evo hatch, I'd check it out for next purchase (assuming insurance for my age bracket's not insane). However, whatever wing it came with would be yanked the first day.

im sure the dealership wouldn't mind swapping trunks for you... its been done before. and yes i prefer it wingless, too.

Lose the Wing! The good news is that the Evo beat the BMW 135i on the track in the C&D Lightening Lap article that just came out. The bad news is that the Chevy Cobalt SS beat them both!

If you don't select the "sound and spoiler package" on the option sheet, do you still get the wing?
Anyone know?

For $40k, they should start from scratch and design a car with a body that doesn't need a wing to generate downforce. Instead of taking an econobox's body and try to adapt it to something it wasn't originally designed for.
banhugh says:

I bet the factory wing is just for the show.
You have to be taking a turn substantially fast to have some measurable down force.
Most of the wind induced force om the wing is just drag that slows down the car.
carlisimo says:

banhugh, many of these wings provide noticeable downforce at freeway speeds, even at 60mph. Higher wings work better in this regard (they catch more air coming off the roof), and you get some additional stability in high-yaw conditions thanks to the vertical fins at the ends (though that's probably only noticeable at racing speeds).
Many also reduce drag by interrupting laminar airflow over the rear end of a car that may be detrimental depending on the shape of the car, in which case they're technically acting as spoilers. (In theory you could design a car with a rear end design that had less drag without a spoiler, but in reality you have to design around passenger and cargo space.) The current Civic Si coupe, as an example, loses 3% of its drag thanks to its wing. Lip spoilers do that too, but without the downforce benefits and sometimes it helps to be located higher up into the airflow over the rear deck.
Aesthetically, wings are the cure for cars that would otherwise look the same going forwards as backwards (cars like that do not look fast). The wing makes them more arrow-shaped in profile. How is that a bad thing? And the Lancer needs it more than most, because of its high-mounted taillights. The car looks terribly awkward without a wing to make the taillights look more centered.

I guess I'm young enough to appreciate the aesthetics of the spoiler, although I'd prefer something more subtle (lip spoiler?) if I'm going to be putting those Evo ponies to good use.
Of course, I probably will never get the chance to do that..

What is with all these old people hating on the wing? I think it looks fantastic. If you want to drive a Buick go drive the Enclave. I'll gladly put up with the lessened visibility.

Make it bigger!

If that's the reason then that is sad.
Not as sad as aging Nissan GTR owners driving around with their big wing trying desperately to have someone, anyone think they are cool but it is still sad.
