I suspect vehicle type had much to do with it.
Nothing screams "Well-to-do citizen with too much money and not enough time/concern to fight tickets" like an X5.

I would think that an X5 screams riches and a broad network of friends and collegues in high positions that can make a ticket go away...

Yeah, my boss keeps getting pulled over when he drives his wife's X5. No pull overs when driving his 525xi (too slow probably).
