For some reason, our super modern, rocket-ship-looking Audi R8 has a big ole ashtray planted right in the middle of the center console.
Who do they think is driving this car, the Marlboro Man?
I can think of better uses for this space. How about an iPod connection? Or just a little storage compartment?
A lot of carmakers don't even bother with smoking accessories anymore, let alone give them such a prominent position.
Does your car have a smoker's package?

WOW. I've never seen this mentioned on the R8. That's really weird. I wonder if someone in the head of Audi likes to smoke?..

Have you ever been to Germany Donna? Literally everybody still smokes! :) In Europe they remove cup holders and replace them with ash trays. After all it is unthinkable to drink a beverage and drive, but impossible to drive without a cigarette. That was the most difficult thing for me to get used to during my short time living in Europe.

My 2000 Nissan Altima had an ashtray that slid out of the dash. It was well used as a coin holder since the small trench intended to be the coin holder in the car could only hold 6 quarters.

My 01 Grand Cherokee has the ash tray in the middle that pops out when u push on it and its the best change holder! My Tahoe doesn't have one, its just a giant empty tray in the middle where crap gets scattered in.

Well, if you can afford to smoke nowadays, then I guess you probably can afford a pretty expensive car with an ashtray.
My 89 Chevy Caprice had no fewer than 5 ashtrays... Times change I guess

yeah, in America people just drive around with their cigarettes hanging out of the window

Yes my 7-series has a smokers package. The ashtray is the cleanset thing in my car.

I'd be surprised if a German car DIDN'T have an ashtray. Smoking (and drinking for that matter) is not considered a big deal in continental Europe.

does this car even have an ipod/MP3 hook up?

Europeans (and Australians) smoke. The Audi is a european car. Hence the ashtray. But here it's useful as a coin holder, anti-acid pill cache, etc.
And for those who smoke, an ashtray.

My MINI has a cigarette lighter and an ash tray. The ash tray makes a nice coin holder.

maybe it's for really expensive cigars.
my '09 GTI doesn't have a smoker's package.

Everyone in the U.S. throws their cigarette butts out the window anyway. No need for an ashtray when you can litter. It's really pathetic.

My Mazda3 has an ash tray and an old school lighter. The ash tray works great as a change holder because it's removeable.

I'm with Stingray. I really enjoy it when someone's firestick bounces underneath my car.

Every car should come as a non-smoker model first and smokers can order a smoker package at no cost. The power outlet is a must though.

Yeah gotta hand it to American drivers who smoke. They don't want their cars to reek of cigarette smoke and get full of ashes. They even realize how the resale value of a car with cigarette odor and burns in the upholstery is diminished. What's the smoker's solution? Keep your lit cigarette out the window so that the ashes blow into the neighboring cars in traffic so that they end up with the upholstery burns. And merely toss the butts on your neighbors' front lawns so they can be stuck with sweeping them up.
At least the ashtrays in dealership loaner cars get used. This despite the conspicuous signage and rental agreements which prohibit smoking in the loaner cars.

BMWs in America always have the 'smoker's package' - a lighter and ashtray. Interestingly, in most other markets, there is an option for a 'smokers' and 'non-smokers' packages. The 'non-smokers package' just turns the ashtray\lighter area into a storage bin.

See if that ash-tray is removable, if it is then that place could turn out to be a nice coin holder.

pretty prominent place... although my truck has an ashtray and a lighter in a pullout in the dash. It's an '01 but the design heralds back the ancient days of when that was commonplace. It's a great change holder since the factory change holder long ago stopped dispensing change (I still have about $.50 worth of nickels trapped in it). The lighter port also makes a great extra power point to add to the 2 I already have.
I do remember though when my grandma's old Buicks and Lincolns would have one in every arm rest on the door and one in the dash.

Don't think of it as a cigarette ashtray and lighter.
Think of it as a cigar ashtray and lighter.

I have the same 'problem' with my 2008 Infiniti G35 ... it came from the factory with the ashtray/lighter package. I have read online where the newer Nissan Maximas come with a felt lined storage 'slot/bin' instead. I would pay dearly for the privelege to substitute my tray/lighter combo for a storage retrofit. Does anyone have any ideas?
