Late last Friday, we got a call that our GT-R was back in one piece and ready for the weekend. A full run down of everything that was done is in the works, but until then I volunteered to give it a test drive to see if everything felt up to factory spec.
It did. The car is still stupid fast and there were no new noises coming from the rear end. No sign of the warning light that started everything either. Everything seemed solid until I went to gas it up. The nozzle clicked off with the tank only half full and no amount of wrangling would get it flowing again. I tried two other pumps at different gas stations, but it was the same story. Needless to say, the GT-R went back to dealer. We'll keep you posted on its progress.

Ok, Ok. So they flew in the techs from Japan and it still isn't right. My questions is this; If you were a "regular" GT-R customer, and this happened, how upset would you/should you be. Isn't Nissan offering some sort of concierge service along with the GT-R as part of the buying experience?
Has the dealer offered you anything in the way of "compensation" (i.e. Laker Tickets, Dinner at a nice restuarant, free detailing, free Nissan Swag etc).
I realize it isn't costing you a cent and everything is under warranty, but come on, there has to be a breaking point.

Let us all know when you all start missing the comparably trouble free 25 year old Ferrari.

Apparently other GT-Rs are exhibiting this same reluctance to take on fuel, if the nagtroc.org forums are any indication.

Proof that the GT-R is indeed NOT a Transformer...
I trust Nissan will get it right, but it has to maddening to see your $70K supercar seeing more time inside the service bay than on the road.

The good news is that it doesnt have a cheap plastic sunroof button or buttons for climate control. I think the haters here to remember the IMPORTANT things about what a long term test evaluates. What's a little time in the shop when the car is so great?
We all know the GTR is a great car but its amazing how a problem with an American car leads to links posted to ridiculous American car bashing rants by the MEchanic and problems with a Nissan leads to "at least Nissan is doing a great job of investigating the problems and flying in engineers from Japan". Double standards are funny things.
We still didnt get an answer about what kind of loaner is offered for this $75k car. It better not be a Versa.

Godzilla needs to go hibernate in the ocean.
In all fairness, this issue could happen to any car. I think what is pissing off most of the readers is how IL's staff is trying to justify an obvious and serious flaw. If you couldn't fuel up your lowly Civic before a long road trip, it'd be a total bummer. If the LT Focus leaked fuel in someone's driveway, Toyota4life would jump on it like a feral wolf over a moose carcass.
And remember folks, a car's primary focus is not to get from point A to B reliably and safely, the main point of owning a car is steering feel.

I would be interested to see how much improvement in reliability for the 2nd MY GT-R. As an engineer working in an engine manufacturing company, I have learned that there will never ever be enough entensive testings done by the manufacturers. The REAL reliability test starts when the product is in the customers hand. Kudos to all the 1st MY GT-R owners, you are the key to make the 2nd MY GT-R a much more reliable car.

What? Couldn't you guys just drive for a couple hundred miles before giving it back to the dealer? It could've been just a glitch or something rather simple. I mean how hard it is to drive a GTR with less than half tank all the time?

How can anyone say that "this could happen to any car". If I bought a new Malibu or Focus I would expect way better quality control. Maybe the fact that parts of the fuel system in their ultra high performance car can also be found in a Sentra might be part of the problem. Automakers are supposed to put hundreds of thousands of miles on a vehicle testing it before it goes into production. I guess they figured that since the Sentra did not have fuel problems when making high G turns the GTR wouldn't either. This car should have been bought back by Nissan and shipped back to Japan to be completely disassembled to figure out what went wrong.
allthingshonda says:

I read an article that said GM chose supercharging over turbo charging for the new ZR1 because of cooling problems with turbos during durability testing. During hard track testing the oil in turbo models would get way above normal operating temps even for synthetics and cause engine damage. The ZR1 has to be able to live up to the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty. I think BMW also has this problem with their twin turbo 6, causing the car to shut down until it cools off.
Point is that they are suppose to think of all conditions the car could encounter and make sure it can handle it. For example all trucks have a maximum payload weight you can put in the bed. But GM and Ford know that people don't weigh things before putting it in so they test their trucks like the real world. Throw as much crap in the bed as you can and make sure the springs and shocks don't fly off.

allthingshonda,
Maybe Nissan rushed things too much in hopes of getting the GTR out the door before the ZR1?
Normally first year new model imports are still a pretty safe bet, however this is quickly turning into a nightmare...
Maybe edmunds.com could have it shipped back to Japan on the Cougar Ace??? (just a thought)
