10-days ago I dropped our GTR off at Nissan of Santa Monica to let them deal with a fuel leak we experienced during some *ahem* spirited driving. Once at the dealer the problem, predictably, could not be repeated and nobody in the GTR program had heard of it. Unlike some other issues we've experienced that the dealer couldn't replicate, Nissan decided to act on our complaint immediately instead of waiting for it to happen again. But as the problem couldn't be duplicated and they have no pool of information on this car from which to draw, they weren't quite sure what they were going to do. After several calls to Nissan brass in the States and Japan a solution was decided upon: Replace everything involved in the fuel / evap system from the driver seat back and ship it back to HQ for analysis. The parts were already in the mail when he called me. The car, they said, would be available the following Wednesday, today.
Well this morning I got another call from our local Nissan shop with more news. When the corporate techs (flown in to diagnose a sick godzilla) were removing the transaxle (!) to replace the fuel tank they noticed some moisture on one of the seals. They wiped it off and road tested the car in an attempt to replicate that leak. No dice. Following precedent set with the fuel system problem, they called HQ and were told to remove the transaxle and ship it back for analysis.
The new gearbox is already en-route, we should have the GTR back on Tuesday unless they decide to replace the engine while they're at it.

It speaks good of Nissan that they're taking this problem so seriously and aren't doing a half ass job (or at least hope so, if not that's gonna be a pretty expensive half ass job for Nissan) of fixing it.
If they have this spirit, version 2 of Godzilla will be truly insane.

Well, at least drivers know that they have the full support of Nissan if they invest in an early version of Nissan's supercar! I think this shows how seriously they take the GT-R and its reputation.

so does the warranty cover this?
cause if not sounds pretty expensive to do, shipping parts around and technicians and all

this is the best their hand built, super cars can pull off?

Well they do this with every new production car, even lowly cars like the Altima goes through these things.
The first case of each problems are engineering issues, not warranty issues. There is nothing to fix here that has a solutions.
Mechanics have no brain to solve problems, they only do things they're told, like nurses.
The engineers at home base are the doctors who can create solutions.

Do you really think that they haven't figured out this car belong to Edmunds? They will kiss your behind for as long as you put it out there to be kissed.

Nipping it in the bud, I think they call it. We think it has more to do with the fact that our GT-R probably has more miles on it than any other purchased car (as opposed to a prototype press loaner, which ours isn't) in circulation in the USA. We think this is the case because we bought ours reeaallly early and drove it across the country immediately, and because when we brought the GT-R in for service, the dealer didn't yet have official pricing info from HQ.

Nissan would be flying me a new car. Totally unacceptable for a car costing that much. I understand its a new model and issues are bound to come up (ie...on my 3rd transmission in my 03 Accord v6-140,xxx miles, warranty's been up but they keep replacing 'em), but for that magnitude of a car, they need to atleast give you a G35 coupe to drive in the mean time.

Pretty bad with Audi's supercar is kicking the butt of Nissans supercar in terms of reliability.

This car needs more work than the old (literally) long term test car, the Ferrari 308! Every time I look at this blog, this car is heading to the shop!! If I had $$$ to buy a supercar, this would not be it!!
Audi R8 please! Better yet, A Mazda RX-8 6MT, Nissan Altima, and Vw Rabbit please!

I'm disappointed that my fantasy car has so many issues. However, I'm extremely impressed at the quality of service you've been getting.
One more thing, billt9 wrote: "Mechanics have no brain to solve problems, they only do things they're told, like nurses."
My wife is a nurse. You, sir, know nothing about nurses.

the effort they are going through is commendable but this is a long time to not have your new car. Do you get a loaner (350Z) during this time? Every owner of such an expensive car should get a nice loaner. If that isnt the case Nissan should have made this an Infiniti.

Good thing this vehicle isn't a Corvette, or all we would be hearing about is "Sh@#$% GM quality, as usual."
Amazing the double standards that are applied.

I called it on the emissions system back when you first reported it- it won't show up because you need the car to be driven a while and gas tank needs to heat up and vapor really start moving into the emissions system.
I see Nissan is going overboard on taking care of it- they are really proud of the GTR!
Maybe you guys will be responsible for a re-designed emissions system or parts.

1487,
I don't know what type of loaner they have but they did offer one. I'll start checking on the type of loaner when I'm offered one.
Also, do you know (I don't) if Z06/ future zr1 owners get a complimentary loaner Vette during extended service visits?

This is why Porshes cost more. Gorgeous exterior paint and finish, gorgeous interior, ingot like feel.
Oh, and they top the quality surveys.
Nissan is 'cheap' cuz it's cheap. Let's see how it shapes up after 30K miles...

Reliability- all perception.
from what i have read on the blog, the GT-R is anything but reliable in my opinion. another person may think otherwise, kindof like the "minor" steering problem with the Buick that was acctually a huge one...this is also why Consumer Report's reliability ratings are open for bias. people are much more likely to complain about a problem that they have with a car if they have to pay a bunch of money for it. if the replacement parts are free, the service is prompt, and the car works afterword, then the consumer is not as likely to denote any "problem"

It's absolutely normal for first year cars to have head engineers come out to look at what's going on. From Saturn to Volvo, they all do it. The surprising part is that this issue should have cropped up when they were doing all of their reliability testing. Though again, it was built on a different day by a different person than the vehicles they initially built for testing, so who knows what else could be put together improperly.
1487 says:

I dont think you are guaranteed a vette loaner car if you have a vette but you will get something. Then again the base vette is over $20k cheaper than the GTR and the Vette (aside from the ZR1) is hardly a low production vehicle. In other words an owner of a 1500/year GTR should expect better treatment than the owner of a vette that sells 30k copies a year and generally costs less. Nobody calls the vette a supercar but many people are calling the GTR a super car.
greenpony says:

Agree with z479. Reliability testing prior to production is conducted with a relatively small sample size, as I understand it. The real proof is in real world testing by real world people. I'm glad to see Nissan immediately jump on this to better understand it, and maybe they will learn something from it to improve their quality in the future.

"Also, do you know (I don't) if Z06/ future zr1 owners get a complimentary loaner Vette during extended service visits? "
No, you get an Aveo. One of the drawbacks of the Corvette being a Chevrolet. No preferential service.
Fortunately, my '02 Z06 has never needed a dealer repair, so I never needed a loaner car.
