On Monday night Ed Hellwig and I drove our long-term 2008 Audi R8 down to San Diego (about 120 miles from Los Angeles) to wach the Chargers kick the living daylights out of my New York Jets. The car was perfect for the trip; comfortable, fast and flashy enough to get us a parking spot, which we found out are very hard to come by at Qualcomm Stadium.
Anyway, on the way home I got a warning light telling me the R8 needed a quart of oil. Then I realized the car was also saying it was due for an oil change. Trouble is, we just had it changed 5,000 miles ago, and the interval is 10,000.
So yesterday morning I called Santa Monica Audi. Turns out the oil change alert is a false alarm, but the car needing a quart of oil every 5,000 miles is normal. You know, they all do that.
Our service advisor, Ken Maryan, also said that if we brought the car over there he'd reset the maintenance light for us. It'll only take a minute, he said.
So I went over a few hours later. The guy plugged a laptop thingamajig into the doohicky and reset the whatchamacallit. They even topped up the oil for me. No charge. And it really did take about a minute.

Wow, 3 R8's in a row. The all silver one looks pretty good, although not as distinctive with the blade.

I actually like it a lot better in monotone without the silver "blade".

"That dude looks way profesional. I would totaly give him the keys to my new exotic."
And that my friends is how you judge a book by it's cover.
Now just add an 'X-' between the two characters of the vehicle model name, and suddenly you're adding a quart of oil every 1500 miles instead of 5k.

Good thing they didn't have to fly a specialist out to take care of that!

Ok time for some good ole Audi jokes:
Looks like three TT's in a row.
Are they all broken down?
Technicians at a Chevy dealer look more professional than that.
I didn't know they let little kids fix exotics.
Alright I have a real question now, is that diagnostic computer R8 only or does it work on other Audi models as well?

Good thing Scott didn't have to park the R8 where I parked the Accord last year at Qualcomm. And by at Qualcomm I mean a mile away and up a gigantic hill from Qualcomm. Not sure if we'd see it again.

1 quart of oil every 5000 miles in a high revving performance machine sounds perfectly reasonable to me....
My 06 SI was consuming 1 quart every 1500-2000 miles for the first 25,000 miles of ownership. Now that was annoying (and expensive, since I used good synthetics).
Luckily, I found an oil where it slowed to one quart every 5000 miles and has been that way for 25k more now...

If the R8 uses the same engine as the RS4, then you guys need to search the forums at bobistheoilguy.com regarding that 4.2L FSI engine. Unless Audi changed, the factory oil for won't last long oil intervals. Some fella did oil analysis and did all the hard work; now he has a special boutique oil mixed up that will last the factory recommended oil intervals. If I can find the thread, I'll post it.

Found the link. Again, if the R8 uses the same 4.2L FSI engine as the RS4, then you might want to read this: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=893022&fpart=1
To quote the OP in that thread, "This engine has proven to be a bear on oils, because of chemical shear, due to high fuel dilution of the Direct Injection, combined with the mechanical shear of an 8250 rpm racing V8. Oil in this engine has been shown to have about a 3000 mile or less life expectancy."

Unless something's changed that I don't know about, the diagnostics are the same as in other Audi/VW vehicles. It's called a VAG-COM, and you can buy your own setup -- there's one that runs on a Windows laptop and another that runs on a Palm. It's pretty slick.

Two things, first I thought all maintenance was done when the computer determined it was time not by set mileage schedules, so how could it be a malfunction. Aggressive driving should shorten oil life considerably. Secondly, needing a laptop and dealer to reset the system seems like overkill. Resetting the system in a Chevy or Honda is a lot more simple. I find it hard to believe that the on board trip computer system in a Silverado is more advanced than a R8.

And why does the readout say 100 miles / 303 days?
sumimasen says:

Did he reset it for the correct remaining mileage in this oil change interval, or is it now going to recommend a 15,000 mile interval?
Is the monitor/reminder on this car adaptive, as in monitors usage conditions and adjusts recommendations, or is it strictly mileage based?
Also, to reiterate the question above, why does the reminder say 100 mi / 303 days? Is that how much they expect these cars to be driven?
rascal99 says:

I ask because I have an A4 and I get similar goofy readouts. For instance, it will read 500 miles / 300 days. Well, I drive pretty consistently every day, about 40 miles. So, it can't be saying get a service in 500 miles, or about 300 days. I guess I'll have to RTFM.

How did having a flashy car allow you guys to get a parking spot? Eh, don't answer that.
e34bmwlover says:

My guess that oil change indicator in R8 is adaptive on how you drive your car. Probably everyone who drove the R8 in edmunds must be driving it pretty hard (who wouldn't?) and the oil is pretty much used up. So in that case you guys should get the oil changed asap to avoid future engine damage since it's a high performance engine that revs over 8k.
I'm disappointed at Santa Monica Audi that they didn't change the oil and charge you $600 again for it. What a shame, dealership that doesn't want to make more money.

On the S2000 forums, there are interesting pros and cons of using synthetic oils. The more knowledgeable members seem to think if you want to switch to synthetic, do it after the first 5000 miles and mix it first. It has to do with the seals and the high rpms. I chose not to go with synthetic after reading that for my s2000 and will likely stay with the dino-juice for my Si sedan also...

why didn't they give the R8 the color driver information display that other lower model cars get?
