2008 Audi R8: I Drove the R8 And I Liked It

2008 Audi R8

As part of my job writing model reviews for Edmunds, I take the opportunity to drive as many short-term cars that pass through here as possible. The more I drive the better, with more volume-selling cars being a wiser use of my time than limited production GT500KR-like things. But as I was about to grab the keys to the 2009 Mazda 6, I saw the Audi R8's switchblade hanging on the board beckoning me. I gave into temptation.

And with apologies to Katy Perry...

(It helps to play this while reading. If that link doesn't work, try the YouTube Video)

This was not the drive I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, keys in hand
Lost my discretion
It's not what, I'm used to
Just wanna try it out
I'm curious for it
Caught my attention

I drove the R8 and I liked it
Despite it's crappy auto stick
I drove the R8 just to try it
I hope my Z3 don't mind it
RTronic felt so wrong
The V8 felt so right
But I'm OK with not taking it home tonight
I drove the R8 and I liked it
I just liked it

I know I should drive the Mazda 6.
It doesn't matter,
You're such a sexier pick.
Just human nature,
It's not what,
Good journalists do
Not how they should behave
I should drive a real car
But so hard to obey

I drove the R8 and I liked it
Despite the photo-taking pricks
I drove the R8 just to try it
I hope Mike Schmidt don't mind it
Dead pedal's placed so wrong
Steering feels so right
But I think I'd rather have a Porsche, alright?
I drove the R8 and I liked it
I just liked it.

Supercars are so magical
High speeds, hot looks, so driveable
Hard to resist so lustable
Too good to deny it
The Audi's a big deal, but I'm indifferent.

I drove the R8 and I liked it
But the Aston's a better pick
I drove the R8 just to try it
I hope Brent Romans don't mind it
MMI works so wrong
The V8 sounds so right
But don't mean I'm in love tonight

I drove the R8 and I liked it
But I just liked it

You guys have the new Mazda6?

That lesbian song is horrible. To mix the R8 into it is even worse. Not very professional either, sorry

Really? I don't think i've heard anybody say that they'd pick the vantage over the R8. A Carrera S is quicker on the road, the V8 is all bark and no bite.

Yeah it's a lesbian song, good to see you really grasped the concept of the song. We need more like ya!

^^sarcasm.

For the record, I'd take the Aston Martin over the R8.

"A" for effort, but let's not do that again. ;)

You know, I can't think of a jRiz post in recent memory that didn't have me entertained as well as informed. Well played, sir. =)

For what it's worth, I'd probably faint if I were ever genuinely given a choice between a Vantage and an R8, but right now, it would be too close for me to call. As much as I love how the R8 looks, my idea of automotive beauty is pretty much best summed up by Astin Martin; decisions...

I enjoyed the prose. And there's a difference between a girl singing about kissing a girl and a "lesbian song". Look deep within yourselves for the answer, if you don't know it instinctively.

I've never really caught on with the R8. It's one of those super-cars (so to speak) that just doesn't sing to me, like a Murcielago. Sure, I'll stare.

But I'd rather the Aston too....or the Carrera S...or, hell, the new Carrera with direct injection :)

Oh, what I'd give to see Katy Perry steppin out of a R8, mmmmm. But on a relevant note, I'd hve to say Aston Martin over R8. I usually love Audi's but Aston Martin makes some sexy supercars

Hahah, that was funny. Pretty clever matching. I don't want to know how much time was spent doing that.

"You guys have the new Mazda6?"

Looks like they just let it slip early that they have added one :)

No, the 6 in question is the short-term car that was featured in today's Inside Line full test.

Just heard this song the other day, and almost cracked up at work when I saw this.

Good job, good job.

Awesome post! You're on a roll.

As for R8 vs. Austin Martin (or any other "supercar") if given the choice. Definitely Austin Martin for me! (or GT-R, or 911, or Z06, or...). The R8 just doesn't do it for me.

sumimasen says:

Whoops, horrendous spelling on Aston (Austin) Martin. Can't take it back now though and still like it better than then R8.

JRiz trying too hard...

If driving an R8 is somehow equivalent to the thought of two women experimentally kissing, then Audi couldn't pay for better advertising.

Nice work JRiz on this post. One of the more entertaining in recent memory. Keep it up, very original. Even had some real thoughts and opinions included!
