2008 Audi R8: No Auxiliary Input for You

r8aux.jpg

When choosing a car from our fleet to take on a long road trip, one of the things we usually factor in is does it have an auxiliary input or a way to connect an iPod/MP3 for road trip tuneage.

Surprisingly, the 2008 Audi R8, the car of Iron Man -- every technogeek's superhero -- doesn't come equipped with an aux input. Even our 2007 Nissan Versa had one. But our Audi only has two SD card slots. And who uses those?

Instead we had to resort to using an FM transmitter to hook our iPod up to the stereo...and change the station every time it gets static-y, which will probably happen a lot during this long trip.

"But our Audi only has two SD card slots. And who uses those?"

Pretty much everybody. The SD card has emerged as the de facto consumer-grade mass storage standard - well, for everything BUT the iPod/iPhone, that is.

For anyone who explores the R8's performance potential, not having a tethered iPod whipping around the cabin might be seen as a benefit.

I suspect the Next Big Thing in in-car geekitude will be built-in media card slots for precisely this purpose. I guess Audi's just a little ahead of its time (some Infinitis are starting to sprout slots, too.)

SD cards are pretty common and quite cheap, so having slots makes sense to me. But I still think the R8 should at least have an aux input as well.

carmizvi,
Sorry, should have amended that to say "And who in editorial uses those?"

opfreak,
Considering we have this baby for only 3 months (and it's a hot car), you bet we're going to give it lots of attention in the blogs. And as a matter of fact the windshield wipers DO work, although not so well when trying to clean the windshields. I blame the cleaning fluid.

caroscuro - I know its here for a short time. But its gotten more posts then some cars that you used for a full year or longer. And nearly as many as those that have been here for months.

From reading about all the cars, is just dissaponting to see so much attention to one car about every detial, when some barely get talked about.

i'd much rather hear about the R8's anything, than a post about the Aura or Caravan.

Last time I checked, this is a LT blog, not R8 blog...

Theoretically, it is possible to have a SD to USB/iPod adapter, but I don't think anyone currently makes one. The catch is that the slot has to have SDIO capability.

@ louiswei,

yep it is. and like i said before, i'd much rather read about the LT R8 than the LT Aura or Caravan. so shoot me.
