2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS: Dig That Stereo

I've had some unkind things to say about our long-term Lancer in the past, but it's time to give credit where credit's due: the optional Rockford Fosgate stereo really cranks (as Scott also observed awhile back). Bass from the trunk-mounted subwoofer is powerful and punchy, and things are screwed together tightly enough back there that there are no audible rattles during bass-heavy tracks, unlike our subwoofer-equipped Accord, for example.

Having driven a Mazda 3 recently that was equipped with the Bose system, I can confirm that the Lancer's Rockford Fosgate system absolutely blows the Mazda/Bose setup out of the water (I digress, but that's quite possibly the lamest Bose system ever to grace an automotive interior). The Lancer was the perfect people-hauler en route to a club in Hollywood on Friday night -- Pit Bull and Lil' Jon's "The Anthem" has rarely sounded so good...

Turn up the treble and turn down the midrange. Also, that "punch level" slider looks very interesting...

"Turn up the treble and turn down the midrange." -- Not on this car. Unlike many other systems (bose), this one isn't over-boosted in the midrange.

"Punch Level" controls the sub. I found that if I turned it up any higher than that, the bass was overpowering. But at the settings depicted above, this system sounds really good.

Someday everyone will learn that Bose is crap. I gladly didn't get it on my Mazda. The stock system still sounds like garbage, but at least I didn't pay extra for it :).

Don't they make you get the Bose on the Mazda3 if you want a sunroof?

compliance - Infinity Reference speakers brightened up my old 3's stereo nicely. They plugged right in & weren't expensive w/the sale that I caught.

I know they make you get it with the CX-7, but it's not bad considering the 4 speaker stock system is TRULY crap and that it's only 1500.

Totally agree, the Bose system in my 2007 Mazda 3 sounds like crap, and yes, it comes as part of a moonroof, 6-CD changer package.

The "subwoofer" is about half the size of Ritz cracker box under the passenger's seat, not very effective to say the least.

Switching out for Infinity's really make that much of a difference? I've always been told the headunit is the first thing to change if you want to go aftermarket?

"Pit Bull and Lil' Jon's "The Anthem"

Good song with a Latin type feel.

"Someday everyone will learn that Bose is crap"

Bose is only a name. The Bose system in my 03 Acura CL-S 6MT SUCKS! In contrast the Panasonic based Acura ELS system (DVD-A) in the new TSX is one of the best systems Ive heard in any car at any price range.

In defense of Bose, the system in our long-term G35 was one of the best I've heard.

Bose is absolute garbage. Read up about their headphones sometime. They market them heavily and completely skimp on R&D, so you end up with awful sounding headphones costing 3x what they should.

Good to hear the Rockford Fosgate system is worth buying. I've been looking into stereo options since the "upgraded" 200w factory stereo in my Fit is still crap.

Agreed, good song. Hit me up if you'd like some recommendations of similar songs. :)

I'm glad that "upgraded" sound systems are starting to sound better from the factory. But what kills me is that they often charge an arm and a leg for them and put them in packages that have nothing to do with the item you actually want. For those ridiculous prices you could get a solid aftermarket system that puts these supposedly "premium" systems to shame...

I have some Bose around-ear headphones and the Companion 3pc speaker system for my computer and I just love them, IMO for the price they're bad.

I've had two conflicting experiences with Bose. The first being in my old 1992 Lincoln Town Car. Terrific. It had the best sound profile I've ever heard in a car. The one in my 1999 Mazda Miata however, distorts to where they sound as if they are blown. Aparently they came like that from the factory. The whole system runs off of some strange ohm so you can't replace just a part of the stereo with aftermarket pieces, you have to do the whole thing at once.

cx7lover says:

^2ohm? They're plenty of 2ohm speakers.

samjpatrick says:

.5ohm actually. This company makes a replacement set but that is about it.

I inherited one of those Bose home theatre alarm clock things and I can honestly say the sound is quite good. But it's only as good as the room it's in.

Bose makes terrible auto audio. I have never heard a Bose system that sounds good.

I'm not a Bose fanboy by any means, but I do think they get a bad rap. Is Bose stuff over priced? Maybe. But it does sound nice. Bose audio has a very warm, comforting, enveloping sound. The Bose systems I've heard are probably the least fatiguing speakers I've ever listened to. I've got a home theater built around a 15 year old set of 301s at home and enjoy every minute of listening to them. And the Bose system that came with my old 1999 Mazda Millenia was equally enjoyable. In some ways I prefer it to the Rockford Fosgate system in my Lancer, even if it didn't have anything near the bass punch the latter.

At any rate, it's nice to see a few more posts touting some of the nicer aspects of the Lancer, especially since the car is nearing the end of its 1 year long-term road test. For a while there it seemed the Lancer was getting hammered here after a strong start when you guys first got it.

Stereo & audio systems in a car ; D Actually, I don't care if it's a bose system or genesis. Genesis are basically supposedly high end equipment & the bose' sold at high price mostly on consumers that lack of mere knowledge. So now, selected autopartswarehouse has the option to retail some of them to these folks.
