Long-Term Road Tests

Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS: Deep Trunk

Edmunds road tests are now using real-world applications for measuring cargo space. Whereas one can write that a car has 14.5 cubic feet of trunk space, some find it better to say "You can easily fit two golf bags and an overnight bag in the trunk," to offer our readers a more tactile sense of the space.

As you know, I go by how much musical gear I can fit in a car. I appreciate the Lancer's wide-opening trunk, and for some reason I'm always impressed by how its enormous manta ray-like rear wing doesn't impede the opening...

My keyboard stand just barely fit in, as the trunk is relatively narrow. However, it's sufficiently deep.Keyboard still goes across the backseat, though.

Land of moose, beavers and Mounties

I noticed you had purchased plastic boxes - in the Toyota Tundra, no less! - for cargo measuring purposes. Would be neat to see how those boxes fit into all the vehicles in the fleet.

A bicycle test wouldn't be a bad thing either. It's good knowledge for my wife when she needs to pick up my sorry cyclist's soul miles from home.

Which current LT Vehicle would you consider as being your preferred mode of transport for your equipment?

You should have seen my 08 Lancer ES last Christmas, when I took my family down to South Carolina to spend the holidays with my mother. Car was packed to the gills. Every square inch of that trunk held some present or another. Barely fit everything in... but it did fit! I will say that I sorely missed the cavernous trunk of the Mazda Millenia that I traded in for the Lancer.

Carm and Bilt:

Ironically, I have found the tiny Honda Fit to be absolutely fantastic for both your needs. I can't get enough of those fold-flat seats. I can fit tons of gear, and I've put my bike in it no problem without even having to remove the wheel or anything. My bass player loves all the room. Packed well, it could probably accommodate a drum kit and a bass rig (small amp).

Felonious: Two projects right now. One's called Jungle City (www.myspace.com/jungleocity) and the other's a new funk trio called the Dirty Martinis. We're just starting. Thanks for asking.

Funky-would my son's keyboard case fit? It's 62" long.

I have a Roland A-90. It has 88 full-size fully weighted keys. It fits in every car we have. I had an Alfa Spider a few years ago. Didn't fit in that. Usually it's in the backseat, angled. But in the Fit, no prob. Needs to be angled left rear to right front, but fits. I've put it in nearly all of our long-term cars. OK, not the Ferrari.

That subwoofer takes up a sizable chunk of that trunk!

Subwooofer is fine.

Why is it Mitsubishi is having a hard time in America. In Asia and especially in England they love the Mitsubishi.

I even put 2 Tote in the trunk and fit just fine.
