The Hyundai Veracruz seems like a forgotten player in the large-ish crossover game. This isn't surprising given its badge and that it has to contend with the excellent Mazda CX-9 and three excellent triplets from GM (with a quadruplet on the way) -- and not only in the marketplace, but in our long-term fleet as well. Quite telling is the Veracruz's fewer amount of miles compared to our Enclave and CX-9 (they all showed up around the same time). However, the number of miles isn't an exact science, so perhaps we've just been overlooking the Veracruz.
If the Hyundai has a major weakness it's size, specifically in regards to the third row...
Recently, the Edmunds.com editors collected a group of three-row, large-ish crossovers together for an impromptu comparison and the Veracruz was amongst them. The big Hyundai impressed many and won some fans, but you'll have to stay tuned on the Edmunds Strategies Blog in two weeks to find out how we ultimately stacked them up. You may be surprised.

I'm sure the big GM crossovers won that one.

You didn't mention the crippling head turn you have to do in the CX-9 to fit. I test drove both the CX-9 and the Veracruz. The 3rd row in the Veracruz wins hands down when compared to the CX-9; however, it loses handily to the GM triplets (and my '05 Freestyle). I still liked the way it drove the most. The CX-9 with the 20" wheels was a little harsh although it whips the Veracruz in handling.

I'm sorry but I never did any head twisting in the CX-9, the Veracruz's third row is smaller than the CX-9's, the biggest thing that the third rows need is leg room and the Veracruz is thoroughly lacking in that, a good 9 inches smaller than the CX-9.

The styling is so anonymous. It doesn't look like it should cost as much as it does. Even if the equipment justifies the price people won't pay if it has no presence. The CX9 and the triplets excel at this too.

I'm a skinny 6ft guy and could not fit in the 3rd row of the CX-9. I never tried the Veracruz because all my buddies at the auto show were like "why the hell would you get in a Hyundai?" I did sit in the front seat of the Hyundai though and found the dash materials and overall quality surpassing the CX-9

cx7lover,
I'd have to cut off my head entirely to fit in the CX-9. My head was barely touching the ceiling in the Veracruz. My knees were higher in the Veracruz, but the legroom was about the same with the seats back. You must have long legs and a short torso. I'm the opposite.
z479,
Your friends don't know a whole lot about cars, do they?

From an autoshow, I felt the order or 3rd row space is:
CX-9 < Veracruz < Enclave. Too bad the Verzcruz's interior isn't very inspiring. Just... glowing blue... and Toyota-ish blobby shapes.

I'd definitely say different builds, just for the record the headroom space in the Veracruz and CX-9 are nearly the same.
The CX-9 has 100.7 cu. ft. of cargo space VS the Veracruz's 86 cu. ft. of cargo space with all the rows folded.
The CX-9 is more fitting (although still behind all mini-vans) for a family, the Veracruz is just too small as stated in the blog post.
GM (116.9) > CX-9 (100.7) > Veracruz (86.8) as far as space goes.

The new Pilot is a disappointment in many ways, one being that it's BUTT ugly, two being that the blue cheap plastic stuff is a direct rip off from Toyota, and 0-60 in 9.7seconds is crazy disappointing, so is the MPG, horrible braking distances & fade, (I hope they fix it like Ford did with the EDGE (they added in vented rear rotors), outdated 5-spd auto, even with Cylinder deactivation, nearly every other crossover without it and with MUCH more power gets the same MPG or better, steep price for an underachiever.
Just thought I should throw the Pilot down the well for the worst. With people in it this thing will get beat buy Nissan Versas. Great hauling space though, not sure if it will be able to make it up a hill confidently with 3 adults inside, how disappointing. I would take a Veracruz over the new pilot any time.

Mazda fans can all fit in the last row of the CX-9, GM fans can all fit in the back row of a Lambda....
Shame there aren't any Hyundai fans around to offer a predictable opinion.
