Our long-term 2008 Hyundai Veracruz has been in service now for just over six months. Seems like a good time for a fuel economy update.

Might as well be the first one to say it. Ho hum. I'll take a deeply discounted Tahoe, thanks. Never once acheived the EPA highway rating?

Here come the comments blaming the mileage on the lead footed IL staff. To me this mileage is about what I would expect. In spite of the hype most V6 crossovers get less than stellar mileage. If you get a Tahoe you will average 14mpg and with a unibody V6 crossover you will get 16 or 17. Its an improvement but its not exactly putting you in Prius territory. If a 14mpg vehicle is a guzzler the same shoudl be said for a 16mpg vehicle.

I agree with ahightower. You can get the same mileage with the larger much more useful Tahoe.
You give up a lot for the illusion of better mpg.

Ugh. I'd hate to be filling this tank on a regular basis.
Once the full-framed Tahoes and Explorers disappear from the landscape, one wonders if their heir apparent unit bodied crossovers are next.

14 mpg to 17 mpg is a 21% improvement.
21% is a quite an advancement, if you don't need the ruggedness of a Tahoe.
Besides, there's other products like the Enclave, which average 20 mpg. Now 14 mpg to 20 mpg is a 43% improvement, and that's big news.

Yes because the Tahoe is so much more manageable, and I'm glad they kept the outdated suspension around, it really makes getting rid of the 3rd row a breeze.
MPG is YMMV, not everyone gets 14mpg in their Tahoe, not everyone gets 16MPG in their Veracruz.

You most likely won't average 20mpg in an Enclave. Their average is 16.7 for the FWD Enclave vs. 16.5 for the AWD Veracruz. I average 20.5 mpg in my FWD 2005 Freestyle. My high is 22 mpg, although I've never driven it farther than 200 miles one way so far. My low is 19 mpg. I don't tow anything though so it's perfect for me. Any other crossover would be better if I did.
cx7lover,
I hope that was sarcasm about the Tahoe's 3rd row seat. :)

the enclave's mileage is similar to the veracruz's which is to say slightly better than tahoe in the city.

Huh, that what I get with my truck...while towing. :-)

I've never been able to get more than 13mpg in my father-in-law's 1/2 ton Silverado while towing a long distance. It is a covered trailer though so wind resistance is a factor. Although it only gets around 15mpg in the city without a trailer. That's without a lead foot too.

I passed a Veracruz on the highway this morning and I didn't know it was so big. Its looked to be about the same size as the Durango it was following.

Isn't this similar to what the CTS-V got? I seem to remember people going nuts over the poor mileage of the CTS-V. I know it's apples vs oranges, but I'd expect this thing to do better than a 400hp sedan.
