2007 Saturn Aura: 'The Incredible Hulk' of Cars, Kinda Sorta

Okay. The comparison in the title may seem a little far-fetched. Maybe it is. But here's what I mean, I saw the movie 'The Incredible Hulk' this weekend and it didn't seem to try very hard to be memorable or interesting, just serviceable. And I had a similar reaction to the Aura. It gets you around town, has decent space, looks okay, but it never gives something extra. It's not fun to drive or interesting to be in, in most any way. Is that bad? Not really if you view cars as a tool to get from A to B. But maybe so if you like a little picante salsa on your automotive burrito.

A compliment that I have for the car is that, unlike some cars in its segment, the Aura doesn't feel obliged to have a ton of buttons on the center stack, which makes it as much an eyesore as anything. Instead, this car keeps it simple and functional, which is not unimportant.

Glenn, are you comparing it to riding the bus? http://66.160.188.111/roadtests/1930

Nah.... with the price of gas these days, riding the bus is now cool.

It wasn't a great movie, eh? Well apparently neither was the last one (never saw it, thank god). Still, I've enjoyed almost every Edward Norton film.

Glenn, I'm curious which cars in this segment and price range do you consider fun to drive?

While its not a sports car, I found the Aura's handling to be above average (until I had the steering rack replaced), and there is plenty of power whenever you need it.

The Hulk movie was okay but the dialogue could've been improved. That said, the action was top notch stuff.

I find the Aura's power characteristics addictive. I don't think any other V6 in the class makes more torque down low and you can feel it each time your toe into the throttle. There's no waiting- just instant thrust. I also like the handling and the weighty feel to the car. It feels substantial and solid.

Talk about being "damned by faint praise"! Yikes

Dont try and rationalize with the staffers with regards to the Aura. The same people who praise the Accord and anything Honda makes find the Aura to be dull and nothing more than basic transportation. No one can quantify how the Aura is any less exciting than the Altima or Accord but this notion has bene repeated many times here. Saturns are boring and Hondas are stimulating.

Sounds like a Camry - so I guess GM accomplished their goal with the Aura.

You would think so but apparently where the Aura is "basic" the Japanese competition is "deluxe" for reasons no one can seem to illustrate. I think the Aura has gotten more knocks for being dull than the Camry did during its stay and thats saying something.

1487, that's because the Camry is "supposed" to be dull. When Saturn openly declared the Aura as a "sports sedan" on national TV commercials naturally people would expect more from it.

chavis10 says:

Expect more as in what exactly? It has great power, good handling, big wheels/tires, etc. What is it missing exactly?

oachalon says:

Chavis its missing a bmw, honda, toyota, or lexus badge. It has an american car company badge on it thats why people think its missing something.

We need to somehow have automotive reviewers do tests blind not knowing at all who makes the vehicle and see if the ranking of vehicles changes. My guess is that it will.

I suppose knocking a self-described Master of Failed Analogies is a pointless exercise; it's like criticizing an AA member for being drunk.

Having said that, if you make an honest claim that the Aura is boring, then I have to assume that you've never seen nor driven a Camry.

(And it's not even a close comparison -- the Aura is an order of magnitude more interesting than the Camry.)

And a comparably-equipped Accord is about an extra year of car payments more expensive.

as someone said, a Honda or Toyota badge. When it has styling and performance that is at least as good as its main competitors its hard to understand how its coming up short.

Not fun to drive? You've got to be kidding!
