Here's what the driver's side floor mat in our long-term Honda Fit looks like every time I climb inside:
Notice that it's jammed up under the gas pedal which prevents one from achieving wide-open throttle -- a much-needed position in a car with only 109 horsepower. The red arrows show where the retaining clips which once held it in place used to reside. Good-bye full throttle. Rest in peace...

Good floor mat retention is PRICELESS. Why practically no manufacturer has figured this out is beyond me. Everyone do what Audi/VW do: screw two posts in the carpet, snap the floor mat onto it, and it won't move an inch. Problem solved.
Moving floor mats are dangerous, they can get jammed up under pedals (that happened to me once in an Impreza...scary thing, approaching a stationary car at 40 MPH with no brakes) and are generally distracting. While I'm looking forward to getting a new car in the next year or so (a proper sports car), one of the things I will miss most will be my Golf's floor mat holders. Honest truth, it makes such a difference.

i don't get it - what kind of second rate installation job did they do? mine haven't budged an inch in 1.5 years and 31,000 miles...
that said, i still miss the lovely swiveling hooks my '91 Sentra SE-R had. Guess metal is too expensive these days.

So get rid of the floor mats. They serve no purpose other then to keep the carpets nice for the next owner.

Did anyone ever purchase and install hooks/retaining clips for the LT Fit?
Maybe it never had 'em, Josh?
kevlang says:

No, they had them - you can see where they cut the carpet to install the hooks. The Fit really needs floor mats - one of the cheapest parts of the interior is the ultra-thin carpeting. I got the all-season mats, which are fantastic - take 'em out, hose 'em off, they're good to go another salty/sandy/muddy season.

Does anyone know if 2009 Honda Pilot will be fuel efficient? Is the cylinder change really saving us gas?

get all season mats. carpet on carpet makes little sense to me.

Did Edmunds ever install the hooks? My guess is not...this is sort of a sad post...

Haha, 25,430 miles, its been such a minor problem no one actually bothered to tell the dealer during any of the service visits in 25,430 miles.
Q: "Why weren't the hooks installed at delivery?"
A: The 18 year old car salesman who worked there for 3 weeks didn't know what the 2 plastic bits in the bag were and left them on his desk... well he doesn't even have a desk. On _someone's_ desk.
Actually the desks at the Honda dealership were busy selling Civics. So he put them in his pocket, sat down, and accidentally snapped one. So he threw them in the trash and pretended "I didn't do it." He moved the trash contents around so some papers in the trash covered the plastic bits. No one saw.

The S2000 has the same problem. I cannot fathom why Honda uses hooks for floormats on some of their vehicles. My '97 Accord simply had floormats with a very spikey underside. Those never budged an inch.

I think years ago Honda had a recall on some of their mats because they were sliding up and could catch on the gas pedal, keeping it down. That is when they started adding hooks to all of the mats.
At least the hooks on the S2000 screw in place. The hooks on the fit just snap in.
But as has been pointed out in earlier posts you can tell they had hooks because the mat and insulation under the mat is cut out where they go. It would appear that they just snapped out and probably ended up in a shop vac somewhere.

Sooooo whose fault is it that the hooks aren't installed? Definitely a safety issue is your floor mats are sliding around getting in the way of the pedals!

I think Built9 solved it. I'm not sure how that 18 year old salesman falls asleep at night.
This is a seriously dangerous issue. I was too lazy to snap my all weather mats down in my car and the gas pedal did get stuck once when I floored it to merge on the highway. I was at +95 mph before I figured out that it was the floormat. Luckily I had a change of pants in the back seat.
Get the clips replaced/added!!!!!

How is it Honda's fault you media types did not read the manual? Further, get over to Honda and cure the issue. Blaming the car is an odd direction.

do the flaps of carpet flip up there? And is the insulation cut out from behind them? If so then the clips were installed at some point in time.
The installation procedure for the clips:

Do the passenger mats have their clips in place?

How much longer is the Fit hanging around. Certainly it's been 12 months of testing, even with it's repair vacation.

why did companies get rid of the spikey bottom on the mats? i thought that was a fairly fool-proof system.
crowb says:

Spikey bottoms wouldn't work on the Fit anyway. That's not carpet on the whole floor. The part partially revealed by the mat sliding forward is a hard plastic type floor. Since the car doesn't come with mats standard, I think that floor was intended to be more wear resistant and less prone to looking dirty than a carpet floor for those people who didn't want to spring for the mats.
Also I'm in the same realm as kevlang. I've got 38K miles on my Fit after 1.5 years and so far the clips for the mats haven't been an issue. They are still functional and intact.

howdy crowb. two questions for you - manual or automatic, and how's your mileage? I track every tank (I only fill up once the fuel light comes on) in a pretty detailed log. I'm averaging about 38 mpg for the life of the car, with about 80% highway driving on average.

OK guys/gals:
This is now the 3rd blog entry related to slipping floormats on the Fit.
From reading and responding to the 2 other posts it seems that the floor mat hooks were not supplied/installed when you got the floormats. I can't tell from the photo here if they've been put in since then (the carpet has the spot scored out from the factory, and I can't tell from the photo of the foam was cut out or not....) I don't recall any followup entries saying the hooks had been put in.
If the hooks still haven't been installed, install them already! Mine haven't moved a millimeter since I got the car 18k ago.
If the hooks had been put in, they should be on the floor somewhere. Were they there somewhere? Do you know for sure that they were ever installed after the other posts?

does anyone else get the feeling that some of the edmunds staff aren't too bright? i guess they're trying to represent the typical car buyer!
crowb says:

kevlang, sorry for the delay. I was out of town for a few days. I track every tank but I don't record them in a log. My highest mileage on a tank was 41.6 that was form Memphis to Little Rock and then down to see my parents in Louisiana. (I still can't believe it was that high, it must have been a calculation error on my part, but I got that 3 weeks ago).
I've never gotten lower than 31. I'd say the majority of my driving is highway. For a typical highway trip I get about 38, though I often get 39.
I have the Fit Sport Automatic (my wife wouldn't let me get the manual because she can't drive stick).
Also, this weekend coming back from my parents the Fit displayed its cargo carrying ability. My dad gave me his old 36" Zennith Pro Scan TV and the stand. We were able to fit the TV, the stand, our stuff for the three day trip, plus my wife's dress (we were down there for a wedding and she was the maid of honor). We did all of this and it didn't impact visibility one bit.
Love that car.
