Long-Term Road Tests

Daily updates on our fleet of cars and trucks

1984 Ferrari 308: Final Ferrari Post

After a heated bidding war on Ebay, our Ferrari 308 finally sold for an even $30,000. Alex from Texas was the lucky winner, but as excited as he was about the purchase, he was smart enough to know that a 1,000 mile road trip in June wasn't the best way to enjoy the Ferrari's charms.

He sent a truck to pick it up today and we were sad to see it go. Although not everyone on staff fell in love with the Magnum-mobile, it won over more than a few doubters during its year of service in the long-term fleet. We'll have a full wrap up later, but for now, this is your last look at our 308 in California.

Would love for y'all to keep in touch with Alex for a while and see if you indeed solved all of its issues, or if even more come up soon.

You made $2000. Not bad.

I don't think they "made" anything, considering how much they spent on maintenance... Hopefully the buyer got a great deal. If I was single, I would have been tempted to go for it, knowing that so many issues were addressed and, hopefully, taken care of for a long time to come.

If I was looking for a 308, this one would have to be at the top of my list, given the care/repairs it's received. Lucky guy!

Sad to see it go. I think the used exotic idea was a great one, and I'd love to see another long-term car along the same lines...an older 911 perhaps?

" don't think they "made" anything"

But they probably 'lost' less overall than they do on depreciation on some of the new cars in their fleet that are similarly priced. Would be interesting to see the actual numbers on a few.

Good choice not driving it across the Southwest in June. As the R8 crew will soon find out, that is not fun.

I know how heartwrenching it is to see the car you love loaded up on a transport and shipped away. I did the exact same thing when I sold my Accord to my friend in TX.

What was the total cost of ownership (including, purchase and sale numbers and, maintenance)? If I recall the various expenses correctly you are down about $3,000 for the year, not including insurance and gasoline.

How did the cost of classic Ferrari ownership compare to other members of your long term fleet? I suspect the 'expensive to own' 308 did quite well.

BMW M1, anyone? ;o)

"If I recall the various expenses correctly you are down about $3,000 for the year, not including insurance and gasoline."

so they lost about a 10.7% in one year.

their long term Pontiac Solstice dropped 18.1%

that was the only other one I found where they listed what they sold it for.

not really fair to compare a car thats 20+ years old to a new one.

after a while, age/miles matter less and less

Lovely car, sad to see it go.

"after a while, age/miles matter less and less"

But that is the point.
Greater age/miles generally mean more repair bills than a new car and so many people focused on what the car cost to keep going for the year.
Each time a new repair came up there was the inevitable "Wow! that thing is expensive, who would want that?"
But I've never heard anyone say "another month with the G35, that thing dropped even more in value. Who would want that?"
In the end the Ferrari's year was cheaper than a lot of new cars.
I read a long term test of an A3 where after the year it had dropped something like $7,000 and they thought that was a great job of holding its value.

Don't even get me started on the whole percentage thing for cars value. It cracks me up when they say that some Kia is the worst because after 5 years it was down to 20% of its original price while some Porsche is the best because it was still at 60%. Never mind that the Kia only dropped like $8,000 and the Porsche dropped more than $30,000 in that time. They could have driven the Kia for 5 years, pushed it off a cliff and then bought a brand new one and still been ahead (except for the having to drive a Kia thing :)

So what's next? How about a used 90s NSX?

No more used cars that no one wants to buy

You don't have to read if you're not interested. I think it was a cool idea. I suggest an older Corvette for the next one.

oh, and thanks for the audio clip even if it is just the car idling up onto the carrier :)

"No more used cars that no one wants to buy"

More people buy used cars then new.

I really like the idea of testing used cars, how a car performs (and lasts)after a number of years is every bit as important as when it is new.

I would never buy a new Ferrari, way too much money to spend on a toy.

I could see buying a used one though.

louiswei says:

first wagon, I think you misunderstood him. He said

"no more used car that no one wants to buy"

not

"no more used car, that no one wants to buy"

Big difference between the two...

Wow, last post and we're still comparing it to Kias and Porsches.

I think any real gearhead should own both a Porsche and a Ferrari at some point. Otherwise, it's hard to understand.

I've had both. Different experience, different cost-benefit.

Sorry to see this 308 go, but hopefully Alex in Houston will drive it like he means it and have a great time.
