2007 Mini Cooper S: Tow Rating

Everyone talks about how fun to drive our 2007 Mini Cooper S is. But I've found it has an amazing towing capacity. Look at this trailer I lugged around with our Cooper.

Not...

Actually, I used the Mini to block in a trailer being used by our contractor. He said parked trailers are targeted by thieves in Los Angeles so he asked me to park my car in front of it for the night.

Ha Ha! Surprisingly I've seen some trailer hitches on cars that should not have been. I've seen an M3, 300ZX Twin turbo, a few corvettes, no minis though. come on people!!

Uh, it doesn't seem like it would take much to just push the trailer by hand to get the tongue out to the street, hook it up to a tow vehicle, and it's gone. Why doesn't the contractor invest the $40 for a hitch lock? Or $20 for a chain and lock and chain the wheels?

Often times when you see a hitch on a car that you wouldn't expect (Miatas come to mind) it's for a little trailer for their autocross/track day wheels and tires.

"parked trailers are targeted by thieves in Los Angeles "

Off topic, but is there anything that's not targeted by thieves in L.A.?

zjev,

I would think the center exhaust would make hitch-mounting a bit of a challenge.

vacagrande, hitches aren't very light, especially since you are putting it at the far end of the polar moment. If I were serious about track events, I'd put the car on the trailer rather than in front :)

The Mini prevents trailer theft by being a louder target?

wouldn't it be great if they used the Mini to steal the trailer?

7driver,

Yeah that's right the center exhaust would cause towing problems, well I guess you would have to use the base non turbo Mini then which has the exhaust to the right:-)

or if they load the mini in the trailer and take them both :)

My mom wants a Mini, and she says all the time she intends to put a hitch on it and tow a tiny little trailer around, just because.

The center exhaust is not much of an issue. There are hitches made to be hidden behind where some MCS have a central light above the exhaust. At this year's Mini's on the Dragon, there were plenty of trailers in tow, but none better than this!
