2008 Mazda CX-9: "Hey, is that the new Buick?"

Last week I was driving our long-term Buick Enclave when a friend asked if it was the new Mazda SUV he'd been hearing such good things about. He was referring to the CX-9. No big deal, I quickly corrected him and thought little of it.

But then yesterday I was in our long-term Mazda CX-9 and another friend asked me how I like the new Buick Enclave I was driving...

This is of course the first time in history a Buick has been mistaken for a Mazda and vice versa, but you know what, now that they mention it, the they do kind of look alike.

While this mistake is rather blatant, i'm no longer suprised when folks see cars as amorphous blobs with no distinction between makes or models.

The attention span of some people might have something to do with it..."Hey is that a Mazda or Bui - look a butterfly!"

"look a butterfly!"

I agree with lvranger

On the news last night, they were talking about a hit and run.

Witnesses described the car as a "white 2 or 4 door sedan, either a Mercedes or a Corolla."

I just shook my head and sighed.

Mazda....and a Buick. Even if you're car-challenged I dont get how you could mix them up. Wow.

firstwagon - Newer Corolla vs. last-generation C-class. Is it really that obvious for someone who's not a car person? They're both pretty generic jellybean shapes.

There was a car that drove off a bridge here recently - witnesses described it was a compact coupe. They pulled a brand-new Toyota Avalon out of the water.

Where is Harley Earl when you need him? Death to the jellybean look! That darn 1993 Infiniti J30 started the whole craze. It was ugly then and its spawn remains ugly today.

Huh? One is all bulging curves and the other all sharp angles and creases. Loook alike? Well, they are both large and ride on 4 tires....

Actually, the 1983 Ford Thunderbird was the first car with jellybean styling.

I loved the J30's looks.

+1 estreka. The J30 was gorgeous. The cars that aped it, including the 1st gen Altima, were not.

And while we're on this topic, let's not forget to blame the '96 Audi A4 for a raft of bland cars, too.

Like the A4 and the subsequent A8 just fine, nicely proportioned cars.
