2008 Honda Accord: Rear Seat Has Room to Spare

When I think Honda Accord, I rarely associate it with a big rear seat. But I sat back there last night and it was shockingly comfortable. And this was after adjusting the driver’s seat for my 6-foot-2 frame. I had plenty of knee room and enough toe room to fit my big size 12s under the seat...
Not bad for a sedan that doesn’t feel all that big from behind the wheel. I’ll compare the accommodations to those in the Aura later.

Our '07 Accord has acres of rear legroom. It's great back there!

Well, it is a large car.

You're a brave man.

Comparing the Accord to the Aura on any point always seems to create a fire fight between inferiority complex of the domestic fans vs the superiority complex of the import fans.

Fun to watch though. :)

The Malibu and the Aura are only wide enough for 2 adults in the rear, and hence they have no rear seat center console.
Plus that your knees are restricted to an inline position, given the Aura's carve-out seat back. You're not allowed to spread your knees apart.

clay920- I disagree. I'm about 5'11" and I find the 07 Accord to be lacking in headroom. My hair rubs on the hairliner! The 08 Accord is much better in this area.

...does this car have no rear seat air vents?
Both the Camry and Altima leather trims have rear seat air vents.

The accord his massive, its no wonder there is room. Only Pontiac can manage to make a massive, ungainly car with a tiny back seat.

Seriously though, it is roomy back there.

I don't think I would have considered the last generation Accord as having "tight" rear seat accomodations at all, but the current gen definitely is bigger in all pertinent dimensions (Leg Room, Head Room, Hip Room, Shoulder Room)

opfreak says:

well when you make a boat, you'd hope there'd be room.

not really. The Accord is a large car and has more rear room than midsize cars in this class like Aura. You can pretend people wont stand for reasonable comparisons between the cars if you wish, but thats not the case. There is nothing to argue here. If you want a lot of backseat room get an Accord or Taurus. When the Accord was smaller none of these journalists begged for more backseat room but now that its larger than others in the class its backseat is suddenly a Godsend. Is anyone going to talk about the smallest in class trunk? Probably not.

Yeah, don't try that in the Altima, Ed. Let's keep things positive with that one, at least.

Accord has great space. It's ugly but it sure has stretch out room.

1487- I agree. It is an EPA large car so I don't see the big deal. Comparing EPA large car to an EPA midsize car seem kind of pointless as we know who the winner will be.

Again to all the Honda folks out there, the current Accord is simply a stripped down Acura RL. Check the specs for wheelbase and front and rear tracks.

Hey guys,

Can anyone post some actual stats when comparing different cars...and not interior volume or inches from here to there.

Post exterior...what's the wheelbase, overall length of the car, and overall width of the car.

By the way, the Accord is only a "large" car when it doesn't have a sunroof. It is considered to drop into "mid-size" with a sunroof.

I've been in, I believe, every car in this class. I have no freaking clue what Honda did, but the back seat feels ridiculously spacious (I'm the average "joe" at about 5'10" and 180 pounds). I'm also very impressed by the under-seat foot room, as pointed out in this blog post.

To me, this post kinda summarizes how I feel about this new Accord. I think Honda did a fantastic job on the interior, but the mechanicals are just on par.

The Accord is a large sedan by the EPA standards because of its interior space rather than exterior dimensions, a result of good packaging as much as exterior size. At 194 inches long, it is right between something like an Aura or Fusion (190) and an Impala or Taurus (200).

Nice pre-emptive move there, Ed. ;)

The first time I saw the Aura interior, I thought the rear legroom was cavernous (still do). I can't comment on the long-term comfort, since I haven't spent any appreciable time back there, but IMO the long wheelbase works wonders for space efficiency. Yes, the Epsilon cars are fairly narrow, but it wasn't a dealbreaker for me.

The '08 Accord indeed looks very comfortable. God knows I'd rather be looking at the interior than the exterior...

Accord: 110.2" wheelbase, 62.2/62.2" fr/r track, 194.1/72.7/58.1 length/width/height.

AcuraRL: 110.2" wheelbase, 62.0/62.4 fr/r track, 193.6/72.7/57.1 l/w/h.

Malibu: 112.3" wheelbase, 59.6/60.0" fr/r track, 191.8/70.3/57.1 l/w/h.

Camry: 109.3" wheelbase, 62/61.6" fr/r track, 189.2/71.7/57.9" l/w/h

Altima: 109.3" wheelbase, 61" fr/r track, 189.9/70.7/57.9" l/w/h

When I think Honda Accord, I rarely associate it with a big rear seat.

Well, when I think of an Accord, I generally don't think of a vehicle that's within a scant 2 1/2" in length of a Chrysler 300. But it is. Welcome to the new reality. Given its large-car dimensions, a spacious rear seat is hardly "shocking". Honda apologists would have you believe that they have achieved some marvel of interior packaging. But, y'know, it could just be that large cars generally have more interior space than midsize cars, which is turn generally have more interior space than compact cars. Nah - forget that - that's just crazy talk.

"Bigger is better" is clearly the new mantra at Honda. Heck, even their trimmed-down, streamlined, super-sporty Accord Coupe is actually bigger than the Altima Sedan.

This strategey will no doubt serve them well with their increasingly aging demographic for Accord buyers.
