As much as I like our G35, it’s never impressed me in the looks department. There’s something about its soft lines that leave me a little cold. Then there are the wheels. Like most Japanese and American sedans, the design of the G35’s wheels do little to highlight its rear-wheel drive layout...

These wheels are flangeless and BMW doesn't believe in that style. In addition, BMWs often have staggered width wheels where the rear wheels are wider and thus have a more noticable offset than the front wheels. Flangeless wheels are supposed to be more of an aftermarket look as far as I know. Eithe way the G35 could use a better wheel design.

Is it me or this blog has "BMW fanboy" written all over it?
; )
By the way, the G35 does has staggered wheels

when have these blogs been anything but that? Where have you been? Show me an auto writer that doesnt worship BMW and I will show you a beach in Kansas. iDrive is pretty much the only thing one is allowed to criticize from BMW.

Whatever, 1487.
I know what design you're referring to, Ed, but I'm not sure I see how the "dish" connotes real-wheel drive. What am I missing?
I think the wheels in this photo look pretty nice, but as I'm not much of a wheel guy, perhaps I'm not the best judge.

Personally, I think these wheels are some of the best on the market.
I like these a lot, along with the 5-Series wheels.
What are some of the wheels you guys like ?

I think they're great. Not all that unique I suppose, but very nice. Much like the Mini's wheels which everyone seems to love. I do like the style of BMW wheel being referred to, from the previous generation 5-series. I hadn't really associated "concave" with "RWD" before, I but I guess I get the point. The Pontiac GTO had something of a "deep dish", didn't it? Big fat rear tires, there was no doubt it was RWD despite the otherwise conservative style. A very under-rated design, that GTO. Maybe one day I can pick up a used 6.0.
I haven't seen any OEM wheels that really excited me from BMW lately. Just checked out their website to confirm, and what they offer on the 3-series is not very distinctive. They remind me of the 16"s that came on my Mazda3 (with the little engine, non-sport package). That's a big compliment to the Mazda, but I expect something more for twice the money. The 5-spoke designs look a little outdated to me, and the others are rather plain with the flat face. I guess it's hard to be unique and hugely popular at the same time, but it seems that BMW has gone very "safe" with wheels, yet very daring with the Bangled body styling. You'd almost expect it to be the other way around - after all, which is easier to change? There are some offered on the 5-series which I like, but an extra $5,000?...
The G35's have a nice three-dimensional look to them... I'm sure I'm not using the correct car-designer lingo. I think the Mercedes C350 wheels may be my favorites for no extra cost.

I like the wheels on the Tahoe LTZ and the Escalade. Very distinctive.

Only problem I have with those wheels - touch a curb and you're dead. Tires need to hit first, not the expensive alloy...

The term your looking for is 'offset'. Offset is a measurement of hub in relation to the rim.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offset_%28wheel%29
And I agree. I strongly associate a negative offset with RWD. Negative offsets allow for shorter axles.
I became quite familiar with offset when I was shopping for rims on my S2000 (requires +45mm offset, much to my annoyance).

i see nothing wrong with these wheels. most oem wheels bore me, and are going in the wrong direction. bigger and heavier, with more expensive rubber.
why does the pontiac vibe gt for example need 18in wheels. 18!!!

Swap in the G37 coupe's 19-inch rims and it looks great IMO:

If the OEM G35's wheels are a bore, swap them out for the 19" wheels that come on the M35/M45 Sport. ;)

I agree that the aforementioned BMW wheels are great. The G35 rims are a little bling for my liking. I don't know about RWD having a certain type of rim, but its an interesting comment.

I like the wheel design, but I know what you mean about the deep dish look on the rears. That design does look better and much more aggressive/sporty.

Iam surprised at your comments, I actually like the look of these rims. But my first thought was they'd be curb fodder given how the stick out!

Im not a huge fan of the G's design either. Not that its ugly its just too "fat" especially in the rear. After the C pillar the design just gets bland and a lot of visual weight comes into play. The last G sedan had a more lean, athletic look and a more chisled rear.
The G37 rims make the sedan a lot classier and upscale.
Best OEM rim design:

"These wheels are flangeless and BMW doesn't believe in that style."
That's not correct. My BMW wheels are flangeless and numerous others (especially sport package wheels) are as well.
The RE050A tires on the G35 have their own flange (you can see it in the pic) to help protect the wheels - mine have the same design.

Just give me any 5-spoke rims, or semi 5-spoke rims like the S5 then I am happy.
3-series sedan sports package's rims are ugly by the way.

Those look very much like the wheels on my 330i ZHP, yet they don't have as much concavity to them in the rear. That's what gives a feeling of depth and that's why the Infiniti's don't look quite as nice. Not bad at all though. Infiniti got it right on the G37 coupe.

The wide sport package rims that the author of this blog is referencing are not flangeless. I didnt mean to suggest BMW doesnt make any flangeless wheels. Flangeless wheels have the spokes flush with the outside edge of the rim and BMW sport package rims are often not like that. Same goes for AMG rims on MB models. Bottom line is the author is saying he likes the wheels on BMW that do feature a large offset between the spokes and the rim edge.

I like the 2nd generation 17" wheels from the original G35 the most. I just want something simple, not too crazy about the current design of the wheels, but the overall sedan looks better than last gen.
on the other hand, I like the old coupe design more than the current G37

I have a new G35xS (comes with the 18s as part of the Sport pkg)...Love the car but I'd agree more aggressive wheels are needed (Esp for the Sport)...Of course, I traded my 2006 A4 S-line which had Hartmann RS4-style 18s - those, IMHO, are the coolest looking wheels PERIOD!
