2007 Honda Fit Sport: My Unlovely Honda Hump

I don’t know about you all, but I refuse to drive around by myself with the front passenger seat slid all the way forward. Whenever I see that someone’s left the seat that way, I compulsively slide it back so that it’s roughly parallel with the driver seat. So it was in our long-term Honda Fit when I brought it along to Joshua Tree National Park last week -- someone had left the passenger seat all the way up, so I promptly slid it back. Except this time I got a little more than I’d bargained for. “In the name of Soichiro Honda,” I exclaimed, “what…is…THAT!”

I’m taking suggestions. Meanwhile, browse onward for a few Joshua Tree pics. I averaged a little over 35 mpg for the trip, by the way -- mainly unimpeded highway driving, A/C blasting (to the extent that the Fit’s apathetic A/C can be said to blast), with some stop-and-go mixed in.

So that's what a Joshua tree is. Cool, heard the name but never seen one.

As for the hump, is that where the gas tank is? I heard it was under the front seats to make room for the trick back seat.

rasldasl says:

It's the gas tank, isn't it? I thought that was why it's so small (about 10 gallons) - because it's wedged under the front seats.

Firstwagon and Rasldasl,

You're definitely right that the Fit's gas tank is somewhere under the passenger seat, and you're probably right that that's what the hump is. But isn't it strange that it's not more artfully integrated into the floor?

Personally, I think our Fit's carrying contraband of some sort.

So, the Versa has a back seat that doesn't fold flat because of the gas tank, and the Fit has a weird hump in the foot well under the front seat because of the gas tank. I think as a whole, the Fit's tank placement is more livable.

How do they route the filler nozzle from the back of the car, even across the car, to under the passenger seat?

Great pics of the Joshua Trees, Josh.

Here are some lyrics from the great album of the same name:
"Desert sky, dream beneath the desert sky..."

Can anyone name the single (WITHOUT using the internet!)?

Awesome pictures Josh. I've said this before but Inside Line really needs to have some interactive photo gallery for pictures of all the long term cars.

BTW 35mpg is really good.

Honda should have made the seats larger and more supportive so that they can hide the fuel tank nicely :) I like the idea of putting the fuel tank under the front passenger seat, since it not only creates a much larger cargo loading height after the back seats are fold down, but also distributes the weight of the vehicle nicely (especially when there's only the driver with no passengers).

I like sliding the passenger seat all the way back as well. Good call on that one.

i love edmunds.

maybe i missed it, But has their been a problem with the fits a/c before?

the aura gets 2to3 stupid posts about the center console, 2 to 3 stupid posts about the radio display blanking out, 2 to 3 posts about a steering wheel cover.

The great honda, "pathic a/c"... a big FAT ZERO.

Thats that good old edmunds bloggers bias.

now bring out the drones that will defend you to the bitter end.

zoomzoom22 says:

11:57 PM, 03/31/08

Ummm...maybe there aren't any blogs about the the Fit's center console, steering wheel cover, or radio display because the Fit's console has no issues, its steering wheel cover stays in place, and its radio display doesn't washout. Besides, the Fit and the Aura don't even compete with one another, so what's your point?

cx7lover says:

03:05 AM, 04/ 1/08

I think his point is that they pick at things on the domestics, and make an exorbitant amount of posts about it, but when it comes to the Honda's, they never even have one post about a major downfall(Like a weak A/C or poor MPG).

I don't feel that way entirely though...

kevlang says:

Yes, that's the fuel tank, and actually the hump is on both sides - driver and passenger. It's annoying when using cruise control for me, because at 6'4" I'm usually looking for somewhere to rest my right foot when it's not on the pedal, and the hump gets in the way. But I'll take that and true fold-flat seats any day.

As for the A/C, maybe I've just never driven in desert weather - I find it too cold most of the time in the summer. I've been impressed with the power of both the heat and A/C in the Fit.

opfreak says:

04:42 AM, 04/ 1/08

zoom zoom. There you go making excuses for edmund.

Who cares what car competes with what other car?

Dont you want to know if a car has issues? Apparently theres some issue with the AC we never heard about.

In the domestic cars, every little flaw is pointed out, and beaten to death. I was just using a few aura examples that have been blogged about over and over again.

There was a honda AC post... someone posted that at times they turn it off to get more power from the car.

eldaino says:

06:35 AM, 04/ 1/08

i think domestic drivers/fans defending their cars on blogs that have nothing to do with them is almost as over done as edmunds so called 'slamming' and 'nitpicking' of the domestics themselves.

lets keep the posts relevant to the car guys.

my fit has not had any a/c issues, but i think as a general rule, smaller cars dont fare as well with thier tiny little a/c uints. my 06 civic had vents that were designed in a way that didn't allow for a lot of air flow (imo), but my fit does much better.

vacagrande says:

06:35 AM, 04/ 1/08

I'm glad to see someone else compulsively moves the passenger seat even with the driver's seat while they're driving alone. I thought it was just myself and Monk.

eldaino says:

06:38 AM, 04/ 1/08

/\
ha ha! yeah i do the same.

btw, those pics are great!

vacagrande says:

06:38 AM, 04/ 1/08

Eldaino - it's not always smaller cars. I had a Ford Edge for a couple of weeks and the a/c on that car was awful. Edmunds complained about their Edge as well. In that case it was the dashboard vents causing the problem - they were poorly shaped and couldn't be aimed correctly. My old '90 Accord could freeze a steak on a 90-degree day, but that was in the un-Al-Gore-approved days of R12.

opfreak says:

06:40 AM, 04/ 1/08

eldaino: yes keep sticking your head in the sand, and pretending theres no bais around the edmund writers.

All you and your kind are doing is sticking fingers in your ears going "lalalalalla"

Then an edmunds blog comes out with a domestic problem, and you jump on it saying the big 3 cant compete, and they still have all these problems, and the imports are soo much better because they have no problems.

when in reality they might have problems, they just arent reported.

Journalism is much more about what is NOT reported, then what IS reported.

karjunkie says:

07:27 AM, 04/ 1/08

Besides the gas tank, it may be necessary elevation for the "magic seats" to line up properly with the back seats when you lower them into couch mode, just a guess. As to the Joshua Tree, it looks like something from Dr. Seuss! Cool pics. I always liked that U2 album and never knew what the heck the tree looked like.

firstwagon says:

07:44 AM, 04/ 1/08

good grief.... even in a blog complaining about a problem with the Fit, an Aura fan still jumps in and complains that no one complains about any car but theirs.

Face it, the Aura isn't perfect... and guess what.... no car is!

opfreak says:

08:38 AM, 04/ 1/08

firstwagon - Its not about the aura.

Forget the aura. I really dont care about the car. I dont own and aura, and most likely never will.

I didn't think you were that dense. But it appears alot of people around here are.

You are missing the point. The Honda/import has a problem and gets a pass. The domestic product gets bashed over and over again.

The first major update about the Honda Fit tranny needed replacing was, inside a previous post. Not a new post saying we have a problem. No it was buried away, hidden from view.

zoomzoom22 says:

Opfreak, I'm not making excuses for edmunds, and I could careless what car they like or dislike. That's a personal choice. Thanks for calling me out though, it makes me feel special. And you are oh-so-good at making me feel special.

If you know the Fit has an A/C problem and it's not blogged about, shouldn't that be enough? Or is it necessary to bring up the whole import bashing thing time and time again? You sound like a broken record.

Every car has problems (GASP!), including the Fit. Who cares if they are posted or not?

BTW, there were several posts about the Fit's transmission problem, and I haven't heard of any major transmission problems with any of the domestics. They must have a domestic bias.

jriz says:

09:01 AM, 04/ 1/08

Over the many times I've driven the Fit, I've never had a problem with its A/C. Mind you I've never driven it to Joshua Tree where it might have been taxed with high temperatures.

However, I wouldn't say the word "apathetic" equates with a problem, I read that to mean simply "doesn't blow your toupee off."

Now, if you'd excuse me, I have to go to my weekly editorial meeting where we discuss bringing down the domestic auto industry whilst wearing "I♥VTEC" T-shirts. Cheers.

-James Riswick

(PS -- zoomzoom, the Silverado has had a transmission issue, although I'm not sure if it's what you'd call "major")

zoomzoom22 says:

09:15 AM, 04/ 1/08

Are the "I ♥ vTech" shirts on sale???

opfreak says:

10:12 AM, 04/ 1/08

the silverado had tons of issues, it still might. People kept telling them to take it in to fix it... Never updated on that status of it.

And isn't the point of the long term test to point out problems?

Heck why blog at all. Lets all hold hands and sing songs.

It matters if they post or not post problems.

Would you care if they just ignored all of the aura's problems? I think that would be a load of crap as well.

Unless edmunds road tests are just an extention of the advertising arm of all major manufactures, problems should be pointed out.

The problem right now is, that theres alot of ""I ♥ vTech" on this site. To ignore it, is to accept it, and worse yet, endorse/support it.

I'm an equal oppurinity basher. but the key word is equal, Whats good for one car should be good for another. Whats bad for one, should be bad in anothe.

kennylxix says:

I'll betcha that's heater duct for the rear seat passsengers. It probably terminates under the middle of the front seat. My 3 has one thats only marginally better intergrated.

dldave says:

11:18 AM, 04/ 1/08

My G35 has a similar hump on the passenger side which drives my wife crazy. Since I am never a passenger, I don't care but if I did, I would get under there and look. Without looking, I'm betting it is the transmission (on my car).

zoomzoom22 says:

11:20 AM, 04/ 1/08

it was a joke, buddy. :)
If you don't calm down soon i think that more people are going to hop on daxtripper's "skip over whatever opfreak writes because its repetitive and false" bandwagon.

kevlang says:

11:39 AM, 04/ 1/08

kennylxix - no, it's definitely the fuel tank. and the Fit doesn't have any heat in the back, only vents are in the dash.

altimadude00 says:

01:21 PM, 04/ 1/08

opfreak -- you seem to forget about all the complaints about the Nissan/Infiniti clutches. Last time I looked, they were an import brand. And the editors were complaining about it in two different cars for the life of the car, in the Versa's case.

Also there's also all the comments that the Kia Rondo isn't sexy and that it just does it's job. How boring is that?!

Oh, and the Azera's stained leather seats and non-sporty ride.

cx7lover says:

01:39 PM, 04/ 1/08

The Azera's leather was stained by someone driving it, the fact that it wouldn't come off is not the leathers fault.
It's ashamed that it got blamed for questionable materials when it happened to another totally different vehicle in the fleet.

I just think there is a lot of complaining, rather than fixing, or remedying the problem. It also seems as if some other cars (Scion) get a pass for dismal MPG because the last one had a much less powerful engine, or the fact that it's bigger overall merits the fact that the Toyota took a step back in the efficiency department.

hondacura4 says:

02:15 PM, 04/ 1/08

I dont think there was an actual malfuntion regarding the Fits A/C. It probably just isnt powerful enough to cool the car down completely.

Just about every small Honda Ive owned was the same way and I hated it. The worst part is that the A/C or rather the blower is weak and on top of that the greenhouse is huge.

sadbuttrue says:

03:35 PM, 04/ 1/08

HondaAcura4,

You got it. It's not that the A/C isn't working -- it's just not exactly ready for desert duty.

Do you have anything to say about the Fit?

dougtheeng says:

04:44 AM, 04/ 2/08

Does the hump get in the way of someone's legs, if they're sitting in the seat when its all the way back?

kevlang says:

04:51 AM, 04/ 2/08

dougtheeng - see my comment above. it doesn't get in the way of your legs, but if you're using cruise control, it limits where you can put your feet.

siarizona says:

09:01 PM, 04/ 2/08

kevlang, I don't understand how the hump limits where you can put your feet while using cruise control. Isn't the hump on the passenger side?

I have been infatuated with the Fit since I 1st saw one in Panama in 2005. Truth is, I want an excuse to get one.
35 mpg is pretty dang good mileage. But I can't understand why the Fit with its 109 HP engine & all the goodness of Honda engineering can't do 40+ mpg consistently on the highway with occasional runs of 45+.
I have owned about 10 Civics since my 1st 85 wagon. My 92 Civic Si consistently got 30-35 in the city & 40+ on the highway. I owned two Del Sol Sis. The manual got consistently topped 40 on the highway & AT got 43-45. My 92 VX consistently topped 50MPG. Admittedly the VX was a very light, bare bones car, specialized fuel mizer. But then doesn't that also describe the Fit.

My Audi A4 1.8T CVT consistently gets 33-36 highway. Compared to the Fit is huge & vastly more comfortable. So what is it about the Fit & the current crop of fuel misers that they don't seem to be able to consistently break the 40+ mpg barrier.

sammydave says:

01:22 AM, 05/21/09

204meca, I own a 2008 honda fit and it gets great mpglike 30-35 The reason it doesn't get 40+ is because it's actually sport tuned the frame is more racing inspired and the entire concept is a small versatile vehicle that feels like a sports car it actual performs like a sports car just on a smaller scale the small 109 hp 1.5L socVTEC feel ready and willing with crisp acceleration. You can have your fit tuned for economy at certain shops and get you typical 40+ mpg

Opfreak, you freaking nuts dude Your just a hater who has nothing better to do then bash good people for telling the truth I bet you drive an import but don't want to people to know, and act like your a die hard american find me a 15 year old ford with no problems at all you cant. I've got a 93 del sol that never seen a mechanic other then tune ups and oil changes 200thousand plus miles you cant say that can you?

great pics
