2007 Ford Edge: Up Close and Personal

I was supposed to head out of town this last weekend, but last minutes changes of plan prevented me from doing so. Never the less, I had the Ford Edge for my days off.

I haven't been in it for a while, and by a "while" I mean since we bought the thing. I know the Edge hasn't been getting a lot of praise so I don't want to jump on the party train. Except for one small fact...
I just wish they used a little higher quality materials for the interior dash. It's not the design at all, which I think looks pretty nice from a bit of a distance.

But once you get up to the interior the cheapish plastic and funky striped metal, I kind of lose interest in the Edge.

I agree with Mike in saying it's Vanilla .  It does everything nicely, but nothing great. I just wish it were a premium deluxe vanilla.

more domestic bashing.

if it was a honda it would be nicely textured. varied materials. firm dashboard.

those pictures make it look boring. but nothing screems cheap.

I think domestic cars need to be sold to edmunds with full gold interiors just so they cant claim cheap

How does it compare to similarly priced crossover SUVs? At LAIAS, I found the Edge's interior quality comparable to Highlanders and Pilots. All three use nicely-grained, low-gloss, hard plastics on the upper dash.

And if I remember correctly, the Edge has nice soft-touch plastics on the door panels. The uplevel models with black leather and white contrasting stitching struck me as "premium deluxe vanilla." The Edge's leather upholstery seems thicker, better grained (BMW-like), and higher quality than the thin, smooth leather in the Toyota and Honda.

opfreak, I wouldn't make it a broad domestic bash. I'm specifically calling out the Edge on this one.

In fact I REALLY like most GM product interiors now. GM has shown the way that American OEM's can produce high quality/aesthetics.

I first saw this in the current generation of the Tahoe and I absolutely love our long term Cadillac CTS. I think it's better than its BMW counterparts. It represents a massive evolution over it's previous generations. I remember the first CTS I got in and thought the interior was horrible.

Ford hasn't learned the lesson GM and it's competition has so it needs to catch up IMHO.

As for Japanese variants, in my opinion they were an example of good without being fancy interiors. But with GM's new emphasis on interiors they are lagging behind.

Oh God...Ford is becoming Toyota!

cx7lover says:

You mean high quality like the Aura and Outlook?
Right.

Oh and the EDGE has style, something Toyota's don't have.

My EDGE's interior is excellent, so is the leather, but don't commend Ford for using real aluminum(unlike a lot of other interiors, like Acura) just mention how cheap you think it is.

130,000+ EDGE's in the first year? They must be doing SOMETHING right.

louiswei says:

If the Edge has style then I rather not have it...

IMO, both the RAV4 and the new Venza are better looking crossovers than Edge. The Edge just reminds me of those Beluga whales I saw at the Georgia Aquarium, especailly in white...

What?? Long term CTS? Did redivan mean SRX or do we have an 2008 CTS in the fleet that hasn't got an introduction yet? If there is a 2008 CTS in the fleet, it would be happy days for many of us here in the Edmunds community.

@tcolberg85:

I sense an introduction coming up soon...

If you think Toyota's have style then... wow, you like boxy appliances.

A sedan crossover? A fancy word for Wagon, given the EDGE and CUV alike could be called a wagon, they all don't look like wagon's.

Sure set off the angry actual Edge owner flamagerage.
So, what if this picture were posted next to the first picture?

Then maybe there's something barbie's doll house playset about that first picture...

louiswei says:

No, Toyota's are not stylish but neither is the Edge. Also, no, they might not look like wagons but in reality they are nothing but jacked up wagons.

cx7lover says:

11:06 PM, 02/13/08

What's the SEDAN crossover? It's not even jacked up.

It's a wagon, through and through, absolutely nothing sets it apart, not styling, not ride height. Deceptive marketing on Toyota's part, something they love doing.

The EDGE is different(not subjective), and stylish to most(subjective) just not to you.

opfreak says:

theres a sedan cross over. BWM makes it

the X6 S.A.C.

I don't understand. What's wrong with it? Doesn't look cheap to me. What specifically makes it look cheap to you?

louiswei says:

09:18 AM, 02/14/08

Okay, let's talk only about the non-subjective topic: How's the Edge different? Is it the first SUV? No. Is it the first crossover? No. Is it in the wagon style like every other crossover? Yes. Does it have sports car like performance as BMW's SAVs? No.

So, again, how is it DIFFERENT exactly?

Take another close looks at Venza, it is a slightly jacked up wagon like Nissan's Murano. If you can't see it then you need to get your eyes checked out.

I like the exterior styling of the Edge. But one simple thing that Ford can do to improve the perceived quality of most of their vehicle interiors is to put in better stereo head units in base models. Those painfully generic units from the parts bin aren't doing Ford's image any favors. Hopefully Sync will bring the style as well as the functionality.

Oh, and please ditch the hideous retro gauges currently found in Lincolns and the Mustang; Instrumentation is one area where you don't want to be living in the past.

billt9 says:

ditto on can't stand the retro gauges.
At least offer an optional package to swap them for a modern set.

sellis16 says:

Second ditto on can't stand the retro/cheap gauges. I test drove a 2007 Mustang GT recently: "21K for this?" 'Tho this looks much better than the Mustang's.

Haven't driven the Edge. Sat in it. Touched stuff as I sat in it. Walked around it.

Conclusions: looks good on outside (all agreed). Inside is a different story > NOT stylish and yes, there are whiffs of cheapness (all SHOULD agree).

Have any of you sat in the new Highlander? Face it, it's gorgeous, stylish, has nice "flow" and, makes you never want to sit in an Edge again. On the outside, it's not as flashy and swoopy as the Edge, but it trades exterior flash for utility and space (95 ft of max cargo space in 'Lander - length of vehicle is about same as Edge's).

"IMO, both the RAV4 and the new Venza are better looking crossovers than Edge. "

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you've gotta be kidding me with the RAV4. The RAV4 is one of the ugliest, most poorly styled crossovers I've ever seen! It's a hodge podge of weird shapes and bulges that don't go together or flow nicely, and everything about it screams cheap to me. Every fender, bumper, flare, and plastic piece seems like an afterthought from a pre-school car stylist.

bemanix88 says:

I haven't been inside the Edge but from the pictures it looks pretty nice. I had the privilege of driving a 5-speed I4 Fusion and thought the interior was fantastic. Simple, comfortable, logical, high quality. The only really stupid thing in my mind is the ugly stereo found in most Ford products.

As for the RAV4, I think it looks anonymous but definitely not bad in any way. I loved the styling and performance of the 2nd gen RAV4... the new one was a BIG step in the wrong direction for Toyota, like most of its recent products.

Stingray--Have you SEEN the Pontiac Aztek? I think that might be slightly uglier than the RAV4, just a bit.
