2007 Toyota Tundra: Using the Front and Rear Parking Sensors

The Tundra is the only full-size truck to offer front and rear parking sensors. They generate audible warnings in addition to the dashboard display you see here (it's all lit up as I just turned the system on).  It seems like overkill at first, but when you’re trying to swing that big nose into a tight parking spot it’s actually quite helpful to know you’re not about to shear the bumper clean off. Same goes for the rear end, although the rear backup camera is usually more than enough to keep you from impaling the tow hitch on anything.

Another thing I noticed about the Tundra this weekend? Its drivetrain is far superior to the 6.0-liter setup in our Silverado...
From the throttle response to the transmission shifts to the overall power and smoothness, the Tundra’s 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed automatic are better in nearly every way.

And this has nothing to do with the recent problems we’ve had with our Silverado’s transmission. Even on its best day, it doesn’t have the quick kickdown you get in the Tundra and the Chevy doesn’t let loose with its full power as quickly as the Tundra either.

OH NO! Now you'v done it! EXPIRIENCE THE WRATH OF GM LOVERS/TOYOTA HATERS!
Don't say i didn't warn you.

Anyways, i like the idea of having visual confirmation for the back-up sensors.

^ Agreed.

Ok, that's it. Game over. Americans need a reality check when it becomes necessary to have sensors covering every dimension of the vehicle.

Tundra has more power, more torque and 6 gears so it should perform better. The powertrain is the one aspect of the Tundra that got right. Interior and exterior design and materials quality? Thats a different story.

Curb feelers are cheaper and retro is in! I drive such a massive vehicle that I need Umpa Loompas to pop out of the tool box and guide me into a parking spot like I'm driving a 747.

Interior and exterior designs are purely subjective, I actually prefer Tundra's styling over the Silverado in every single way.

The Silverado Limited might have better interior material quality than the Tundra but the un-Limited models is about the same if not worse. Before the Tundra redesign it was being knocked on having weak powertrains, too small and not "American" enough. Even though it had the class-leading interior back then seems like nobody gave it the credit that it deserved. Now after it got the domestics beat in just about every way performance wise, people starting to criticize its interior fit-n'-finish?

Talk about hypocrites...

I dont think the Tundra's fit and finish is the real issue - the problem is the dashboard design. Its gotta be the most uncohesive layout I've ever seen, 3-4 colors, looks like 3 people just merged their designs together. As for the Tundra beating domestic powertrains - lets just wait for the new Ram to be tested.

The Tundra is a solid truck for sure, but I dont see it beating Chevy or Ford for the top rank on the sales charts anytime soon.

what a shock! Who would've guessed? The guy who has a problem with every domestic product on the market likes the Tundra better. And I bet Rush Limbaugh likes Romney better than Clinton. wonders never cease.

facts are never your strong suit. F150 had best in class interior, not Tundra. The old Tundra basically had a 90s camry interior that looked like it was made for a car. No style, OK materials and good ergonimics. The interiors of trucks are better than ever and thus compared to the 2007 Silverao and 2009 RAM/F150 this interior looks terrible. Dont blame me (or other hypocrites) for pointing out that Toyota came up short on the interior of this truck. The engine is great but the Ram will match that this fall with its 380hp V8 as will GM if they drop the 6.2L in the Silverado.

The Tundra is going to have a tought time exceeding 2007 sales. NEw Ford and Dodge are coming out this fall. Current Ford and Dodge models will be discounted big time this year. Silverado/Sierra should be getting 6 speeds this year as well. Its shaping up to be a year of big time rebates for the Tundra if Toyota wants to maintain the 200k/year pace.

Man! so much wishful thinking and predictions it's allmost funny, every year we hear the same old lame excuse, just wait until this comes out and toyota is done for, its the same old crap with every vehicle toyota has , every midsize sedan was supose to kill the camry, every small sport-ute was supose to kill the rav4 , and on and on, sheesh! BLOOMBERG reported that the Tundra destroyed the big 3 in texas,is this true? no but they sure as hell are aware of the fact that the tundra is here to stay, the f-series and the silverado both sold over 400k more than the tundra if you want to look at it that way ,or we could count f150 and silverado 1500 since toyota dont have as much models to truely compete, info on toyota tundra's dominance in texas is at pickuptruck.com and bloomberg.com/asia.

The only problem I have with the Tundra is the fold-up / fold-down rear seats.

On the Double Cab, the rear seats fold up—which is the way it should be. The problem is, when folded, there's this stupid seat brace base that remains on the floor, thus making the task of putting and removing items more difficult. Honda, GM and Ford have this figured out with an obstruction-free nearly flat floor. Why couldn't Toyota do the same?

On the CrewMax, it's even worse. Only the seat backs fold flat. Therefore you have to lift whatever you're putting in there MUCH! higher off the ground. So when loading, bring some extra muscle, as you may need it.

Talk about hypocrites...

Also, please show me the "fact" that F-150 has better interior in terms of both material and fit-n'-finish than the last gen Tundra.

who's fault is that? You cant blame GM or Ford for making every kind of pickup. Look for big rebates in 2008.

"And this is coming from a guy who has problems with every imports?

sigh........that is wishful thinking. find one statement from me indicating I hate imports or I buy cars based on country of origin. Just one will do. for the record I like the TL, 3 series, Mazda3, G35, 2008 Highlander, Es350, 2009 A4, A8 and several other imports. Do I worship imports and find them infallable like some people? No. Does that make me a domestic car fanboy in your eyes? Likely.

"Also, please show me the "fact" that F-150 has better interior in terms of both material and fit-n'-finish than the last gen Tundra."

Never seen one review of the F150 or comparison test that suggested its interior was inferior to the car like Tundra interior. Have you ever been in an F150? Besides, why are you arguing about the superiority of a last gen pickup? who cares? The new interior is lacluster just like the interior on the RAV4 and Avalon. Honestly, this is one of the worst Toyota interiors in recent memory and it proves they need to let Lexus designers take over.

The irony of the situation is that domestic bashers are always on their soap box about not accepting "less" and thus only buying imports and yet when we get "less" from Toyota we get excuses from people like Louiswei who says "hey lets remember the last Tundra interior was class leading" or "who needs a nice interior in a pickup?". Please stop. The bar has been raised and Toyota decided to put all its money into powertrain while ignoring interior design. Once the two new pickups come out it will be worst in class on the inside, even the Titan is better. Who would've thought Chrysler would be able to do a better interior than Toyota a few years back? Times change fast in this business.

Okay, then please also find one statement from me indicating that I hate domestics or I buy cars based on country of origin. Just half will do. For the record I like CTS, Sierra, Corvette, all the lambdas and several other domestics. Do I worship domestics and find them superior like some people? No. Does that make me an imports fanboy in your eyes? Likely.

You see how easy I can just use your own words against you?

Talk about hypocrites...

Never seen one review of the last gen Tundra or comparison test that suggested its interior was inferior to the other domestic trucks. Again, your words against you...

Why I am talking about last gen Tundras? Because when the interior design/fit-n'-finish/material was better than other trucks it was being knocked on not being "truck" enough. When the current gen Tundra finally got "truck enough" it's now being knocked on interior design/fit-n'-finish/material.

you are just too witty for me! I can only go based on what you type. In these blogs you are constantly riding every GM product and pronouncing the superiority of some import product. Don't know why I thought you hated domestics. I was obviously off base, I see the reality is you have a lot of love for non imports. I havent known you to make many objective comments but maybe I've missed all the good stuff. Generally speaking your comments tend to fall into the "this domestic is a half baked effort" and "this import is my kind of car" categories.

"Never seen one review of the last gen Tundra or comparison test that suggested its interior was inferior to the other domestic trucks. Again, your words against you... "

Read C&D and you will see they pronounced the current F150 to have a best in class interior on several occasions. If that doesnt mean its better than the Tundra than I am mistaken.

"Why I am talking about last gen Tundras? Because when the interior design/fit-n'-finish/material was better than other trucks it was being knocked on not being "truck" enough. When the current gen Tundra finally got "truck enough" it's now being knocked on interior design/fit-n'-finish/material. "

Let me explain this to you. The last Tundra was knocked (not by me so I'm confused as to why I'm being called a hypocrite) for being too small and too weak and it was guitly on both counts. Toyota addressed that but they misjudged the jump in interior design in this class and it shows. If you want to applaud Toyota for a dated, worse in class interior that is your right. I see no reason to pat them on the back for a playskool plastic parody of a truck interior when even Dodge is bringing its A game to truck interior design. You keep saying the old Tundra was the unequivical leader in fit and finish but I don't know that to be true. The old GM pickups were knocked for platic quality and dull design, not fit and finish. Toyota took a step back in interior design and everyone except you seems to be able to readily admit that. Not sure how its hypocrisy to say Toyota got left behind on interior design. If this was a Chevy you would be filling these blogs with "what was GM thinking?" vitriol but since its a Toyota you want to get mad at me and not the Tundra's designers.

Er, back to the powertrain stuff..

The GM suffers from the desire to acheive the best fuel economy possible, and that means holding higher gears longer rather than downshifting, engine torque management delaying power application (which is why the power comes on later), etc. The real weakness is the 4 speed auto, which really needs to be the new 6 speed asap. The programming for shifts and torque management have been overcome in the aftermarket by tuners for years now, for those concerned enough about it. Toyota DID do a good job on that front though.
