2007 Mini Cooper S: MPG to Date

Here are the current mpg numbers for our 2007 Mini Cooper S. Now even though the manual Coop is reported to get 29 mpg/36 mpg city/highway, suffering under our staff of leadfoots (feet?) she's been averaging 25.7 mpg. Best tank: 30.9 and worst tank is 22.3.

And just out of curiosity I looked up my average mpg for my trip up north over the holidays, driving extra legal speeds and without the benefit of cruise control and I got about 26.5 mpg...

If cruise only costs $250 on this vehicle, I wonder how long it would take to "pay" for itself in improved fuel economy savings.

i doubt it would matter much

the 2008 epa numbers on this car are:

25/32 28 combined

ewilfong, the article below on the Edmunds.com site could help give you a ballpark idea on the cost benefit of cruise control. The catch is you'll have to do some math to figure it out. :o)

Like me, you may also want cruise control for its original, non-fuel-economy intent. I certainly wish we would've ponied up $250 for cruise and the steering audio controls it comes with.

Best tank ever with my 07 Cooper S - 35 mpg (road-trip at an average of 75 mph). Average tank doing 50/50 highway/freeway and tons of WOT: 30 mpg. Most recent tank, 31 mpg.

Either you guys aren't using premium fuel or there is something wrong with your car. I've never seen lower than 27 mpg and that was AC and running it hard.

hmm at least blu is in a similar area.

but theres alot of factors that influence gas milage.

#1 is the car itself. each cars tolerances are different, so just a few pieces in one direction or another could add up to a miles or 2 in ethier direction.

Given Socal's really mild weather I can't understand how someone could get 25 mpg with the Cooper.

Okay, let's say Caroline took a long holiday trip of about 1200 miles. She's a speed demon and averages 26.5 mpg with no cruise. At a modest $3.35/gallon for premium, gas cost her $151.70. The Edmunds article suby pointed me to said cruise improved mileage by an average of 7%, so we'll say Caroline used cruise and got 28.355 mpg. In that scenario, gas would have cost $141.77 for a total savings of $9.93. Woo-hoo!

As opfreak points out (beat me to the punch!) the revised (more realistic 2008 method) fuel economy estimates for the 2007 Cooper S are: 25 city and 32 highway.

Also, from Monday through Friday, our poor Cooper S is faced with horrendous L.A. traffic where you're in stop and go for your entire trip on the "free"-way.

So our roughly 26 mpg lifetime average doesn't seem that bad in light of those facts.

ewilfong,

Dunno why you didn't finish your little math exercise, but following the numbers to their logical conclusion to answer your original question: let's round that $ per 1200 miles to $10. That would mean it would take twenty-five 1200 mile stretches to pay for cruise, or 30k miles total. I'm guessing 30k miles translates to about 2 years for most people. That's not counting money saved by avoiding Karl's speeding ticket or James' potential crash from reaching over to fiddle with the audio controls. :-)

If you daily communte consists of going from the South Bay area to Santa Monica then you'll understand...

7driver, I thought the very thing you wrote. Don't know why I didn't write it. :)

i'm glad to see an update on the mpg of this bugger! :p not a fan of the red. anyways, that's besides the point. I'm wondering why the Cooper ain't get the reported mpg when everyone else that I know of or heard of, gets the reported or even better. Hmmm....

Have a '07 Mini 7, live in Boston, do lots of road miles, (already have 12000 miles since August) and have had tanks over 35 mpg with long-term mileage averaging about 33.5, and it would be higher if I hadn't been stuck in a 5 hour traffic/snow jam in Boston recently, and I still have fun driving it!

Not really impressed with the mileage for such a dinky car. I am a leadfoot as well, and in my 2001 325 Wagon (manual) with 140,000 miles, I still am getting 21 city and 29 hwy, and SUPER legal speeds, no CC. On a true combined tank I get 24ish. It's a much bigger (and nicer) car as well. Oh, BTW those mileage figures are from when I was cummuting from Thousand Oaks to Santa Monica...stop and go, baby, stop and go. Ok, mostly stop.

cartester, there is something wrong with Edmunds' Cooper S. I drive my Cooper very hard. WOT several times a day: check. Running to 4-5k RPM between shifts: check. Running at above 75 when possible: check. Daily stop n go: check. Average gas mileage: 30 mpg.

That said, I also glide quite often. I rarely brake for lights I see are red in the distance. On hills near my house I'll take my foot off the gas and glide for long distances - daily for over half a mile on one slope. If I'm in stop n go I do everything to avoid hitting my brakes and keeping the car creeping along without gas. I keep the AC off as it saps too much power. These are all things I started doing with my 2003 BMW and my average gas mileage with my ZHP was over 23-24 MPG (235 hp) - which is nearly what my wife gets with her A3 DSG. My 2006 330i averaged lower at 22 mpg.

Still say you guys have an issue with your Cooper S.

2007 Mini Cooper S mpg report: City avg. 23.5 mpg. These are short trips (12 to 20 miles roundtrip). I live on a hill 900 feet high so each trip to town is downhill, then back up at steep grade. Most city streets are 45 mph with 1/2 to 1 mile stretches between stop lights and I must admit to having a semi-heavy foot (hey, it's a turbo right?). Best Hwy mpg to date was 48 mpg. 70 miles to Burbank at 65 mph with cruise control engaged. I reside in Orange County, So. CA.

oops, forgot to add to my prior post - this is an automatic transmission . . . .

2007 Mini Cooper S, automatic - mpg update March 2009 ... just did a 140 mile roundtrip (all highway) at avg speed of 76 mph (speeds varied between 70 and 80 mph) and final mpg was 39.6 mpg
