Eesh! I was just going to do an update on our 2007 Jeep Wrangler's fuel economy but it turns out we haven't done one for this car yet. So here it is. Much apologies to those who have been waiting for this...
Worst tank: 11.4
Average mpg: 15.9
FYI, EPA estimates for an automatic 2007 Jeep Wrangler is 17 mpg city / 21 mpg highway.

is chrylser ever coming out with a more efficent 6 cylinder? ~200hp & ~ 250ftlb. Seem woofully underpowered for a big v6.

That's not bad mileage for a real truck with bad aerodynamics, an old pushrod engine that's being driven by magazine editors in LA.
Where did you get the 21.6 tank?

The 21.6 tank was actually on our Death Valley run.

Yes, the 2007 estimate for an automatic transmission Wrangler is 17 | 21, but for the 2WD version. Yours is the 4WD, for which the 2007 numbers are 16 | 19. In your URL, change the 100782106 to 100782108 to link to the correct model and its specifications. Like firstwagon said, 15.9 isn't too bad for a vehicle of this nature.

The 3.8 makes a good base engine but I'd like to see the 305 hp 4.7 V8 offered as an optional engine, at least in the 4 door version.
I don't see much advantage to a high tech high revving V6 in an off roader.
Unless you're a mud bogger, most of the time off road is spent with the engine near idle speeds.

More than anything, this mileage is due to the meaty tires. Though it would look ridiculous, the Wrangler could get far better mileage with passenger tires.

I think I'd prefer a big low-revving four or six, with a manual tranny, for serious off-road work.

The should offer the Wrangler with a diesel. Better fuel economy, and the low-end torque of a diesel would enable the Wrangler to do even more amazing things off road.

Good idea, stingray454. The diesel they were offering in the Liberty last year would have been ideal for the Wrangler. I guess with the Daimler-Chrysler divorce, our hopes for a full line of clean-diesel SUVs are dashed.

wow - this essentially four passenger, light jeep has only 1 mpg better than a full-size, body-on-frame, 4x4 Chevy Tahoe?? Chrysler is just hopelessly behind, an american version of MG in the making.

this thing weighs in at over 4000lbs, nothing light about it

No surprise. Those open front fenders act like a sail making it maybe one of the most aerodynamically inefficient vehicles for sale in the US. But it's also what makes it so wonderful off road.

The Liberty diesel exceeded expectations and was a huge hit but couldn't meet the then new EPA emissions standards for diesels in 2007. The Wrangler is currently available with the 2.8L CRD in Europe which has laxer standards on the particulate emissions, I believe.
