2007 Honda Fit Sport: Easy Driver

"I can tell everyone's annoyed that you know how to drive in the rain," my driving companion said as I scooted the recently repaired 2007 Honda Fit Sport around West L.A.'s slower moving traffic. I was enjoying the light shifter; flicking the stick with just two fingers. I especially liked how it was such a smooth transition between gears so that I didn't have to worry about jostling my passenger (memories driving my angry brother around in the Mini swimming in my head). And the clutch is easy on the legs, which I was particularly thankful for as I sat in rainy rush-hour traffic with L.A...
drivers who seemed utterly confused that water was falling from the sky.

Great blog! It never ceases to amaze my how flustered California drivers get in the rain. I've lived here all my life and I have no problem driving in the rain.

I love the Fit. Glad its fixed.

Based on my long-term study (8 years of living here) I'm convinced that this is the idiot capital of the world as far as drivers go. These fools consistently do the opposite of what (un)common sense and logic would dictate.

A few examples I've seen: driving faster the worse visibility and traction get,
making even more spastic/unpredictable maneuvers than they do in the dry, and tailgating even more than normal.

Don't get me started on how they blow through reds, leave massive gaps when stopped in turn lanes, and lack the consideration to ever use their turn signals...

I used to think it was D.C. drivers who took the cake. Then I moved to DFW. They're pretty bad there, too. Then I moved to Chicago. Wow.

It finally dawned on me. Chances are that if you put three random drivers in three cars on the road together anywhere in the world, at least one of them will suck and make life miserable for the other two.

Try driving in Long Island, NY sometime in the rain. Here you'll find two types of drivers: (1) Rain? So? I'm still going to go 30 miles per hour over the speed limit; and (2) Rain! Oh no! I must travel 30 miles per hour under the speed limit!

Well, I'm glad to see the Fit back in action!

I, for one, do NOT miss L.A. traffic mixed with L.A. rain.

mjd1123, you get those types of drivers anywhere! well, at least from L.A. to Philly. I learned this on my 2700+ trip in May. :)

We have 'em here in Jersey too. I also believe that the number of people who drive super slow in the rain has grown here. I think that the "super slow in the rain drivers" now number on the level of what used to be the "ultra slow paranoid because there's snow on the road drivers". And now when it snows......forgetaboutit!! There are countless people with white knuckles that barely break 5 mph (and there are those that go way too fast here too).

The fact that so many SoCal residents are transplants from some other locale has always made me suspect that nobody anywhere knows how to drive in the rain. Except Caroline, of course. ;-)

If it's like that in the rest of the US, then I love it here in the midwest, especially Kansas City. Most of the time, the stupidest thing any driver can do here is doing an illegal u-turn at a busy intersection. People here seem to have no problem with rain and they laugh in the face of snow and ice. Granted I run into my fair share of stupid drivers, but they seem to be far and few in between. I now don't want to visit LA more than ever :-)

Do you get those people that turn on their high beams in the rain. I'm seeing it more and more and it drives me absolutely bat shit as it does the exact opposite of what they're trying to do. It makes me want to swerve into their lane for a good ole head on collision. "Sorry I was blinded by your high beams".

I'm gonna have to award the title of worst drivers to Boston. Dallas and LA are close, and anything south of Austin is pretty annoying as far as passing lane loafers. I find the Okeys to be a little slow, but they don't tailgate or refuse to let you merge.

I test drove a Fit and absolutely loved it. The steering, handling, and shifter were just excellent. Unfortunately, I just couldn't quite get comfortable with the lack of leg room up front. I'm enjoying my new Mazda3, and feel I may have dodged a bullet given your Fit's reilability problems. And I'm probably getting about the same gas mileage as a Fit. But still, the Mazda 2.0 and gearbox are not quite as smooth and refined as I remember from that Fit. Compromises...

Outside of California, I'd say Houston. I'm convinced every car there is stolen, because that's how everyone drives.

jaden-
Kansas City has some of the best, most polite drivers of anywhere in the country.

What gets me about LA rain is that people around here think that it's raining buckets when in reality (as anyone from the south or midwest can attest) it's basically just a nice shower. The pooling on our poorly designed freeways is concerning, but other than that, keep it movin'! With extra following distance, of course. Seriously, folks in other parts of the country will do 50 mph on 3 inches of snow...a rain shower shouldn't be this big of a deal.

Oh, and while we're ranting on LA drivers, let me also mention that LA has a lot of tailgating b/c no one in LA yields for faster traffic. Anyone annoyed by tailgaters needs to take a trip to Kansas City or somewhere similar, where people DO yield for faster traffic. Then you'll see why folks tailgate. Two wrongs don't make a right, but ya gotta acknowledge the other one, too.

I dont think i'd question the fits reliabilty on one trany dieing.

if we can belive the tech this time around, it sounds like a mistake made in assembly (someone forgot to tighthen a bolt or something like that). remeber humans still put togther cars.

from various fit forums, i havent seen a pattern of tranny problems.

I second opfreak on this one. If you check out the Fit forums you'll see a lot of complaints about the paint being too thin and easily damaged or complaints about a rattling dashboard, especially in cold weather, but I've never seen engine or transmission problems being thrown around.

What city has the worst drivers in the country? Wherever the person making the statement is from.

I notice in the picture that the gauges seem very bright, are they distracting in person? I drove a last-gen Accord and I found the huge electroluminescent gauges too intrusive, and they weren't even blue.

They've also had warped rotors, right?

opfreak says:

Wrapped rotors. imho is an industry wide problem. Cheap chinese metal is what I blame.

desmolicious says:

On what do you base that claim? I've never had warped rotors (3 BMWs, Mercedes, Jeep, VW), but then again I've never owned a Honda.

hondacura4 says:

Ive heard about warped rotors from manufacturers other than Honda. Nissan, Toyota, and some others.

Ive owned Honda/Acura vehicles since I was 16 and have experienced "warped rotors" on the older cars. Of course now I do a lot of research on common issues.

On my current 4 Honda/Acura cars I changed the brake pads to something with better material after break in and have yet to have rotor issues. OEM Honda pads SUCK!

Sorry guys, but the worst drivers ever, according to my dad where in Michigan.

At least the way he described was, the drivers there had one hand out the window to flip you off and the other on the wheel to hit the horn. Now that's driving :-)

In my experience the worst drivers are from warm climates who go to higher elevations for the snow. They seem to think their 4 wheel drives eliminate the laws of physics. That is until they rear end some poor sap.

eldaino says:

obviously none of you have been to NC.

apparently, there is a law here that states that while merging onto the free way, yeild signs suddenly transform into stop signs. oh the horror. i hate it. and this is coming from a fit driver who realizes his car isn't exaclty as speedy as some other peoples cars can be when merging.

as far as problems with the fit go, if you go to forums OTHER than carspace (as they have become fodder for people who like to fight and complain or have one off issues) there are relatively few issues or problems.
My dash rattles a tiny bit in super cold weather, but goes away when the roads smooth out (nc roads really stink).
