2008 Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport: It's Double Jointed!

Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport Double-Jointed Wiper

Since it's perpetually 72 degrees and sunny here in Los Angeles, we don't get many opportunities to test out things like windshield wipers. In fact, last year I think I used them maybe thrice. So Tuesday's rain gave me an opportunity to become reacquainted with these forgotten automotive staples -- and in our Mercedes-BENZ C300 Sport, good ones at that. Long gone is Mercedes' huge one-blade wiper design, replaced instead by two that manage to cover an impressive amount of windshield...

The passenger side one is double jointed, allowing it a greater range of motion. This isn't a feature unique to Mercedes-BENZ, but it does clear more of the glass and prevents that little shark-fin-shaped wiper gap at the bottom of the windshield.

As you may notice from the video, they aren't the quietest in the world and when there's not a lot of water, they squeek like a small field mouse is propelling them. Another complaint was that there are only four wiper speeds -- no manual, rain-sensing (optional) or speed-sensing intermittent settings. Considering it won't rain again for seven months, I can probably live with that. You may not be so lucky.

My dad's Durango has that. It's pretty fun to watch, at least for the first couple minutes. And it clears almost as much of the windshield as a minivan's wipers do.

Rain-sensing wipers are part of the P1 Premium Package ($1400 MSRP) along with some other goodies. (begin shameless plug) Even the base BMW 328i has fully automatic rain-sensitive wipers standard. They also have 4-step adjustable sensitivity. (end shameless plug)

BTW, the squeaking could be a combination of new blades, temp and humidity. My BMW blades squeaked like crazy just once during a medium rain shower. Since I've used them a few times they are now completely silent.

All Mercedes actually do have a manual one-sweep feature. If you push in the end of the wiper/signal stalk all the way, you activate the washer jets, but if you just lightly tap it to it's first detent, it'll sweep the windshield once.

I didn't say they didn't.

However, bimmerjay's correct. The P1 Premium package does add rain-sensing wipers, along with satellite radio, auto-dimming mirrors, power-folding mirrors, heated front seats and garage door operner. Our car simply has the Multimedia package, panorama sunroof, 7-speed auto and 18-inch AMG wheels.

Here in Vancouver British Columbia it rains everyday (that's not even an exaggeration) so wiper function is very important. Thanks for keeping us up to date. My Infiniti wipers started to squeak as well, then the drivers one fell off with arm and everything. Turns out the squeak was the pivot joint wearing out. My wipers get a lot more use than yours.

Vancouver is absolutely gorgeous and the nicest city in North America as far as I'm concerned (which is saying something from an arogant Torontonian). However, all that rain would have me reaching for the Prozac as much as the windshield wipers.

its hard to believe a $40k car doesnt have heated seats or auto dimming mirrors but I guess thats the price you pay for the 3 pointed star. The Astra and Mazda3 have rain sensing wipers, they are standard on the Astra.

India also has aircraft carriers, does that make their navy better than USN?

Vancouver is beautiful Jriz. On average we get about two weeks of actual hot sunny summer. The trick is guessing when those two weeks are gonna be; July? August? sometimes early September? The rest of the time it's overcast, cloudy periods, periods of rain, showers, sunny periods, partly cloudy, partly sunny, rain followed by showers followed by sunny periods, on and on... Oh and just to get back on topic: is the post saying that you can't control the speed of the intermittent wipers? What are the four speeds? Normally there's Int, Lo, and Hi. That's only three.

what road in sunny california is that? i've seen a very similar design with the palm trees in the middle, and everything looking so beautiful in several music videos/tv shows/etc...

As nice as those rims are, I think I would have personally take the premium package over them. Once you use auto-dimming mirrors, it's no fun to go back to not having them.

benson, the answer is Slow Intermittent, Faster Intermittent, Low, High.

Yeah, those wipers are pretty cool.
My mom has an Accord, and the wipers are HUGE and they clear a really good amount of the winshield.
They also prevent the "shark-fin-shaped wiper gap" on the bottom of the windshield.

I hate that shark fin gap with a passion!! But something i think i want on my next car is for the wiper lade to be hidden from view when not in use.

Luckily both of my future vehicles(vW Jetta 2005.5+ or BMW x3 of any year ) have them.

I never had the opportunity to ride in one of the single arm mercedes. How were the single arms? And what was the obsession with wipers on the headlights? How do they work/get replaced?

Thanks James! Would you happen to know if Edmunds is looking for an intern this summer? I will do just about anything, even if its vacuming/washing cars or being enslaved at Edmunds :). You have no idea how much I want to work for you guys.

Say what? So you are saying that auto wipers on other cars arent equivalent to auto wipers on a MB? If a car is premium it should have more than lesser cars, period. Why should you pay extra for these goodies on a luxury car?

I used to have an Acura Legend coupe and it had the cool feature that when the wipers were turned off, they would tuck under the hood out of view. Was kind of annoying if you needed a quick swipe though; wait for wipers to come out, swipe, wipers tuck back in.

James, I commend you once again on your videographic savvy. Every contributor should be as innovative as you are. ;-)

Vancouver is absolutely gorgeous. I'd agree that it's one of those hidden gems.
