2007 Honda Fit Sport: Zippy Little Go-Kart

Last week I wrote that the Honda Fit Sport is exactly what I expected from a four-cylinder. Peppy. . ...

to a point.

But this weekend I had to get somewhere in a big hurry, and I was happy to have the Fit. Admittedly, it was VERY early in the morning, so there wasn't traffic, and I would have appreciated a bigger engine. But its performance really reminded me of what a great city car it is. I would love to have this car in Europe. Because it's very small, it takes some punishment, and is really very sporty. As an NBA fan, I'd rather have a power forward car: good power, good size, but not a 7-footer with a wingspan like a pterodactyl. This car is like a really nimble point guard, or a soccer forward. Quick moves, slips through trucks and other traffic with aplomb. Like a guy in a movie who dribbles right under the big guy's legs. Finesse over power. Fun.

"I would love to have this car in Europe"
First of all, who cares whether this is sold in Europe or not. But since you mentioned it, the Fit doesn't have a chance there. You see, there are so many beautiful subcompact car in Europe that Fit would be lost in the crowd. Here in the US there are only a few so it stands out (Fiat alone has 5 models the size of Fit)
Also, Europeans have more appreciation in style and a little less in practicality (cargo capacity, flat trunk etc). So IMO Fit doesn't have a chance. The 2009 more stylish Fit might stand out.

banhugh -- all those "beautiful subcompact car[s] in Europe" include a whole bunch of Honda Fits - only they're called the Jazz over there.

From wikipedia:
"...the UK's biggest automotive survey, performed by the motoring show Top Gear, revealed that the Honda Jazz was the second best vehicle on UK roads, as voted by UK car owners in 2006. The enormous popularity of the Jazz has made it Honda's best-selling model in the region, comprising 30% of all European Honda sales."

I live in England right now, and I see the Jazz all over the place.

In keeping with the NBA metaphor, my Fit reminds me of John Stockton. He wasn't flashy, but he was awesome just the same. He came to play every day and had the right kind of moves when it counted. Not the flashiest or the fastest guy on the court, but a tough, talented little point guard.

And that's the Fit to me in a nutshell.

When I mentioned Europe I meant the countries that actually use the European currency :p (just kidding)

The currency used doesn't change anything, the car market is still remarkably similar across Europe. Small hatchbacks just sell well.

I was reading a European website earlier this year on a hatchback comparision. The verdict was despite the age of the Jazz, it was the winner by a comfortable margin.

It's a great car, even in Europe. (and I'm not a Honda guy).

(If I can find the link again I'll post it)

banhugh; you have been owned.

a lot of european designs are just as quirky as the fit, and the jazz seems to sell just fine there. stop acting like your opinion is the end all for all who live in that portion of the world.
