2007 Honda Fit: I Got Blisters On My Feet!

I bit the bullet and jumped into the fray of holiday shopping this part weekend. I don't like the crowds, the idiotic debates over whether my sister would like a salad spinner or not and I really don't like traffic.

This hat trick of fun was compounded when I was in the parking lot of a local mall. I loaded my stuff into the cargo area, hopped in, started the car and put it into reverse...
Except it didn't want to go into reverse.

I tried revving it bit to get it in, tried to let the car roll a touch to get the gears in the right place, everything I did wouldn't work. As I tried to mash the shifter into place, two cars were contesting each other for my parking space and my girlfriend was wondering why I was swearing so much. I was stressing out.

My only solution was to Fred Flintstone it. I opened my car door and literally pushed the car out of its space with my foot. People stopped and stared. The two cars vying for my space didn't seem to car about each other anymore. Not only was it a little difficult to get the car out of the space, it was embarrassing.

While I sheepishly slunk out of the parking lot, I thought back on what it could have been. I then remembered I heard what sounded like a lot of keys and change banging around in my girlfriends purse on the way to the mall. No purse my friends; it was the tranny taking a dump on the roadway. Ho ho ho.

Next on my shopping list: a Honda dealership.

Please give us (or me) very detailed updates! My 2006 Si has a really really bad transmission that my dealer refuses to do anything about since they can't "diagnose" the problem. Just because it doesn't happen when they're in the car, doesn't mean it doesn't happen!

you can email me at dragonzsoul@gmail.com

i know html isn't really allowed, but i need a lot of information on this. sorry!

That's a bummer, Scott! My WRX's antiquated 5-speed MT can be difficult to get into reverse as times, too. I've done everything you've mentioned in your third paragraph save the swearing part. Sometimes, tapping the brake pedal once helps. Other times, I'll shift to first gear before attempting to shift into reverse again.

Perhaps you should've taken one of the trucks that were left on P3 for the weekend?

every now and then my scooby is reluctant to go in reverse but if I let out the clutch and push it back in it goes right in... after trying all what he tried though it sounds like some synchros need to be replaced or something!

The clutch out-and-in trick sometimes works on my Toyota pickup when it's being balky. So does dropping it first into 2nd gear, then into R.

Still, it took my pickup 150,000 miles of driving to get in this condition. Certainly unusual (and disconcerting) at 20,xxx...

Yikes! Normally it's Honda automatics that do stupid things like this.

Reminds me of a Friends episode:

"I went to put transmission fluid in, and the transmission wasn't there! It must have fallen out a couple miles back. I just thought we hit a dog."

Hope everything turns out ok. I really liked what I've heard about the Fit so far.

I've had a similar issue with my Mazda3's 5 speed on occasion, but dropping it into forth and then right back to reverse (or letting the clutch out and then pressing it again) seems to do the trick every time. I've never had to push the car at least!

My '94 Saab 900 also doesn't like to go into reverse once in a while. Letting the car role a few inches helps the teeth to match up, and then I'm off and going. It's odd to hear of a Honda having major trouble like this...Keep us posted.

Sounds like all that "how fast can I zip in and out of traffic" has caught up with you edmunds guys. It's a commute car, not a green light racer.

Notice on most of the updates we get they tell us how much zip, or how quick the car is around town. Remember the "lightning for 5 feet" update that preceeds this one?

Go easy on it you brutes.

ack! not good news! is this an isolated incident, or has anyone heard of this being a problem with the fit/jazz?

haha that was a seinfield episode i think!

i'm not surprised to hear this right now.. my Si has been giving me a lot of grief lately..

No, it was a friends episode. Season 4, "The One Where Chandler Crosses the Line". Joey spoke those lines on the phone to Chandler, explaining why he would be back late. I watched it a day or two ago, so I remember it perfectly.

All Honda manuals do this. If you select reverse and it doesnt go just release the clutch, engage the clutch select reverse and poof, youre going backwards. My Integra GSR powered 95 Civic EX sedan, 03 Acura CL-S 6MT, and 02 S2000 do this as well of course without the noise that you described. Im interested in what the noise actually was as Honda manuals are usually pretty stout unless seriously abused. Its the older Honda automatics that really suck!

Dragonzsoul, simple solution my friend! Change your transmission fluid to Redline MTF or GM Synchromesh MTF as a lot of Civic Si/Acura RSX-S owners I know have done it with tremendous results. Good luck.

I hope this is an isolated event. This hasn't been a very good year for Honda.

dragonzsoul says:

stovt001: my mistake =P

hondacura4: thanks for the advice! yup i know this will solve it, but i want honda to give me a new transmission first. my 2nd and 3rd gear are practically dead..

Toasted!
And Consumer Reports and JD Power both claim from their research that Honda is the most reliable brand of all in the USA!

You got bad luck, Edmunds.
Everyone scurry back to your Toyotas now.

1487: dropping keys into tranny. Thats a new one ;-)

gothemi2003 says:

As do I 1487. I can picture some young editor standing on the go pedal slammin the gears.

1st....slam.....2nd.....slam

opfreak says:

your slaming a tranny with what ~110hp&110ft/lb? ohh the power.
if their slaming the tranny imagine the 17 year old that just got one.
acceleration like the bloggers posts comes from short first and 2nd gears. since its a 5spd, honda goes to fuel economy and 3-5 are taller gears hench why this car starts to slow down in those.

I can see it now: many of the children getting their parent's old broken down Hondas and Toyotas that they bought over the last two decades will hate these cars, and flock to GM and Ford for their next new vehicle, declaring all Japanese cars unreliable and of poor quality. And the cycle of market share trends will reverse every generation.
