2007 Jeep Compass: Noisy Bugger

"How did you get stuck with the Compass?" one editor asked me as I had purposely picked our 2007 Jeep Compass for the long Thanksgiving weekend. "Cuz I didn't want to deal with shifting the Fit," I replied. (I was left with slim pickings for the holiday; not that I'm complaining.) I'm currently training for a marathon and the last thing my legs want after a 13-mile training run is to deal with a clutch in stop-and-go traffic. Besides I knew that the Compass' heated seats would feel like heaven to my aching body...
However, the noisiness of the Jeep made it hard to really enjoy it. Some of these issues can be fixed but since they weren't when I had the Jeep, I'll complain about them.

1) Since the moaning brake issue was never taken care of by the dealership, the SUV would loudly alert all those within a two-block radius that I was in fact backing up into a parking spot.

2) I still hate the fact that this car loudly accelerates.

3) Every time I hit the lock button on the key fob, the Jeep sounds a loud horn honk. I know my neighbors who live over the car port hate me. I started locking the car by hitting the lock button in the car before I shut the door instead since this isn't something that can be disabled by the driver.

Why any car company (Jeep, Ford, etc.) think that 'honk on lock' is a good idea escapes me. Honk is automatically an irritating thing. Guess a $3 beeper is too much...

One good thing abort the honk - makes it easier to find your car in a crowded parking lot.

I can understand not wanting to shift the fit, but wow, those noises do not sound pleasant. So what marathon are you training for? Los Angeles? What time are you tracking on/targeting?

I like the honk at locking. Well, any noise at locking is good....it is a reassuring sign that the car is indeed locked, and the keyless entry system still has batteries that work.

stovt001,

I'm going to do the L.A. marathon but my time isn't all that impressive. Maybe just a bit better than Katie Holmes' 5:29 time.

You know, that photo is the most flattering one I've ever seen of that car.

I recently whent on a bussines trip and rented a Lexus GS . It (i think other toyota products do it too) had a girly "beep-beep" sound. It's actualy ok once you get used to it and its loud enough to tell you your doors are locked, without waking the dead.

Isnt the Jeep Compass's year over? Looking back, the Azera and Tahoe are going to be wrapped up soon, and they joined your fleet in December, whereas the Compass joined in September.

To me it seems like this car has been around forever, and if it sucks so much I dont see why its being kept longer than needed.

This summer my dad had a 2008 Ford Escape rental, and when you pressed the button once, the car chirped, but if you pressed a second or third time it honked. That's a better system I guess. I remember it was fun pressing the lock button repeatedly while in a store and watching people stare at the honking vehicle! :)

Caroline-

I did the LA Marathon on the new course last year in 4:15. I was tracking on 3:45 all during training but then a bad knee injury during the last few weeks of training slowed me down, and my knee gave out four times during the run. The new course is fast, but the middle is absolutely brutal. It is just slightly uphill, and there is absolutely no shade. Just sun beating down on asphalt.

My '98 Honda honks only if you press the button twice. It flashes its lights on the first press, then honks on the second to tell you, "THE DOORS ARE LOCKED ALREADY!" I've always thought that those obnoxiously honking their cars just hadn't figured out that you don't NEED to hear the honk to know the doors are locked. I guess it's not the owners but the cars (and manufacturers) who are obnoxious!

The Honk on Lock can be disabled through the EVIC:

EVIC is standard on all 2008 Limiteds. Not sure if it was standard on the 2007.

Wow, this bucket of loosely-tightened bolts is still around? And only 12k miles??

It doesn't have EVIC - see Caroline's link.

If you don't have EVIC then the dealer can disable the Honk on Lock.

stovt001,

That's impressive considering the knee injuries! I was going to do the marathon last year, too, but got injured. I'm taking it easy this year to prevent that from happening again but would like to work up to at least an 11min/mile pace. Are you going to do the City of Angels half marathon on Sunday?

Sadly I'm in Oxford right now, so I won't be doing the City of Angels Half Marathon. Given my knee problems, I think I'll limit myself to half marathons from now on, like the Catalina and Disneyland halfs. I started training for the marathon two years ago, but I had to drop out the first year because of knee problems. For the second year I was too determined to run it to drop out, so I just learned how to turn off the pain alarm in my head. I don't recommend doing that, as it is there for a reason, much like the idiot lights on a car dash. 4 years of competitive Cross Country and Track and Field and two years of marathon training have finally caught up to me.

I've been lucky in that I've never had knee problems. I stopped running (CC, 800m, 400m, and 50m dash) in high school after my achilles tendons became inflamed. To this day, I still get random charlie horses. I still play tennis, though.
