Pulling out of a parking spot in a large multi-leveled structure in the Ford Edge I collided with a much larger 2006 Range Rover coming speedily around the bend from the lower level. While the impact was negligible and the Edge felt sturdy and tough the damage tells another story.
There's not only damage to the upper and lower bumpers, but a gash straight through the bumper's exterior in the dead center of the vehicle. I found this surprising given the low speed at which I was pulling out of the spot, but assume that the other vehicle's velocity allowed for the extensive damage...

Careful. There's a wasp hidden in the bumper.

Does the building have cameras? If so you might be able to prove the range rover was traveling too fast for the garage. If not, i imagine it will be very difficult to get out of being found the responsoble party. I am just amazed at how fast people will fly through parking lots/garages...

estreka,
lololol.
casp201,
it is amazing how fast people fly through parking lots.
that's why most accidents happen below 5 m.p.h.

i don't think anyone goes 5 mph inside a parking lot
uh oh, better get maaco (no, not really)
casp201 says:

well 5 mph is a little slow... you'd end up wearing out your brakes because most cars will idle faster than that... but there are many people who go 30+ in parking lots and then wonder why they get into so many accidents.

sorry, what i meant was a lot of accidents happen in parking lots.
what i meant by 5 m.p.h. was when you are backing out of the parking spot.
but yeah, i agree.

Nooooo! It seems like every month a long term car trades paint with something. I hope it doesnt happen to the Enclave, GT, Wrangler or the Ferrari.

daytona 500,
yeah, i hope nothing happens to those cars either.

I have to admit I chuckled a bit when I saw the pic and title. I just told myself "Damn it, it's that Edmunds curse again!"... :)

personally what i find more impressive is the fact there was a long term post on the weekend.
kudos to you Alison for keeping up updated.

Stop killing all the cars!!!!!
Yeah, cars do drive far to fast in parking garages. I drive slower than most other cars, at about 15 mph, so I don't hit cars pulling out, little kids running out of the cars, and don't miss any open spots hidden by long cars, and cars always speed up behind me.

Back into a parking spot and you eliminate this risk.

The way I've always seen it, backing into an area a few feet wide is every bit as problematic for most drivers as backing out into an open area with moving cars. You'd think backing into spots would be the easy solution, until you realize that so many drivers can't part straight to save their lives, and adjusting for a crooked car in the spot next to yours is much simpler pulling in than backing in. When backing out of a spot, I always pull out just enough so the back of my car, with backup lights showing, extends beyond the cars next to me, then I wait for a moment to make sure oncoming cars see me and stop before proceeding.

My parking preferences are: 1. drive- thru 2. back-in 3. and least favorite, pull-in. When my father taught me to drive, 50 years ago, he always insisted that whenever possible, I avoid backing out of parking spaces.
And no, I've never been involved in a backing accident.
I've always been amazed that more drivers don't avoid putting themselves in a position where they have to back out.
True, Alison doesn't mention if she had a choice of pulling-in or backing-in. Hopefully, if given a choice in the future, she will choose to back-in & avoid the hazards of backing out.

Yet another car with decorative bumpers that expensively break at the slightest impact.
This will never change unless consumers consider it a shopping point, and it will never become a shopping point when the cost remains hidden in insurance premiums.

I see your point, but practice makes perferct, don't you think?

You make a very dangerous assumption that the other driver is looking.

too bad we cannot read the opinion of the other party about the accident. The damage is not that extensive and it certainly does not prove that the other party was speeding or that it was not your fault.

VVK, I don't assume they see me. Once I get to that point, I can see the other car enough to tell if it has stopped or not. If they don't stop, I don't go. If they stop, I proceed with caution. Never once had an incident or close to it. I have never once been in a situation where I could not see other cars coming while backing out of the spot, and even if they are far "enough" away I assume they're going faster than they are and wait for them to pass.

Also, I learned to drive in a 1970 Cutlass, so with the long hood I was practically as far away from the front bumper as I was from the rear.

While this does happen to a lot of the Edmunds long-term vehicles, I suppose it makes sense. When you have so many people driving the vehicles, someone is bound to have an accident. I just hope it doesn't happen to the Azera. I have one of those, and it's my baby. I can't stand the thought of it in such a state.
