2008 Scion xB: Shifty McShifter

Overall, the xB is fine. It's a HUGE improvement over the previous version. One thing I can't stand it how the transmission kicks down even if I just brush the accelerator. Gets annoying real quick. The shift it yourself is useless too - it just holds at that gear - no real control...

I like the quiet ride - a road trip in the xB is quite doable.

Just curious Brian, but are those footwells as narrow as the photograph suggests? That, along with that big fat center console suggests the interior might be kind of cramped for long hauls.

Or am I imagining things here ? ;-)

I see what you mean - it wouldn't be my first choice but a long trip would be fine. When driving the car, it doesn't feel as cramped as that pic makes it look. The dead pedal is nicely placed, maybe that's why it doesn't seem too small.

The Hyundai Tuscon I rented did the exact same thing. But you can't rent manuals any more so I was stuck with a slushbox that kept kicking down at darn near anything. Shame to hear that the Scions are doing that as well. It seems automatics are going backwards in tech not forwards. I only buy cars with Manual transmissions because automatics are so prolematic.

Seems like a car like this would be more suited to a stick shift

i took the xB on a 1k road trip - it was great. i never felt cramped, and i'm just a tad over 6 feet tall.

I have to agree with jadolph, and I'm 6' 2". I had no problems with footwell space. In fact, my family of four has never felt cramped in this xB, and back seat room borders on huge.

The only reason we didn't take it on a 1,000 mile trip is this: with four aboard there isn't enough luggage space for a long trip.

The 2.4l actually has enough power with an auto now, plus it gets the same MPG if the EPA is right.
