2007 Nissan Altima, 2007 Infiniti G35: Something's Backward

2007 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE steering wheel buttons

This is a closeup of the buttons on the left side of our 2007 Nissan Altima's steering wheel. Note the toggle switch for "seek." It operates exactly how I'd expect it to operate -- push up to advance to the next CD track, push down to go back.

Below is a photo of our 2007 Infiniti G35's cockpit. It's a little hard to make out in this photo, but if you follow my lovingly hand-drawn red arrow, you'll see that it, too, has a toggle switch for seek functions...

It feels just the same as the Altima's switch, but it operates in exactly the opposite manner: Push down to advance, push up to go back. I always get it wrong when I get back into the G after not driving it for several weeks.

This oddity is not unique to our G35. A G37 test car I drove was just the same. This seems to have been a conscious choice made by a designer. Or does Infiniti use a different supplier than Nissan? Or is this some silly problem I could easily correct by more diligent RTMing?

The reason it's different on the the G's is because on the info screen when you have it on the radio screen the tracks or radio stations are laid out going from top to bottom with 1 being at the top and the last track or number being at the bottom, so it would make sense for the toggle switch to follow the screen push down to go track 2...3...4...5 and up to go the other way. The Altima's NAV screen doesn't lay out CD tracks or radio stations like the G's info screen.
