2007 Mitsubishi Outlander: Ripping Another One Off

Mitsubishi Multimedia Communication System

I blogged earlier about ripping a CD to our long-term Lancer's hard drive, now it's time to update how to add Title and Track info to No Title / No Name playlists and tracks. This time I tried out the identical system in the Outlander. See that little touch button in the lower left with the ambiguous ^ logo? That leads to a menu where you select "function edit" and from there you can edit track names, playlist names or delete things entirely from the system...

Finding the playlist edit was a little more difficult, but I found it without the manual.

Adding track and playlist names involves typing the info out using an ABCD-style touch keyboard, so you'd have to be pretty dedicated to sit there for hours on end typing out all an album or playlist's track names. God forbid you ever want to add "George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic with 'Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication.'" But hey, that's what gridlock traffic's for, right?

ABCD-style keyboards drive me nuts. My Garmin GPS is the same way.

Every heard of QWERTY, guys?

On the Lancer you can switch the ABCD to QWERTY (HOORAY!). We should check if that's an option here, too.

I wouldn't say that manually entering track information in this system is as tedious as watching paint dry. I'd say it's more like blowing on a freshly painted wall to make it dry faster. If you try to do too many at one time, you'll get lightheaded and have to sit down for a while. Luckily there's no danger of your falling off a ladder and breaking your neck. Just don't do it while driving, though.

I'm so dyslexic sometimes. I thought the title said "Ripping One Another Off"

Despite being quite a quick typer, for whatever reason, I prefer the ABCD when typing with one hand on a touchscreen.

Does anyone know how to get the update for the gracenote music db for the outlander? This would reduce the chance of having to type the song and album names.

Having to type in each and every track for each and every CD ripped to the vehicle would get very tiring... That seems so old school, especially when most ripping programs on your computer can automatically get the track names for you.

I know that they have to connect to the internet to do so, but it would be nice if there was a way to connect to a site that would download a gracenote database that you could then upload into the harddrive of the vehicle that it could then access. All you would have to do then is update that database every so often and that would end for the most part the manually typing in the track and album and so on...

Thanks for saving me some work dodo, I appreciate it. Also, I should note that I needed to type in the info in this case because I was using an album I purchased and burned from iTunes.

Just so you know, you should be able to avoid typing in anything you download from iTunes. If you select the box that says "include cd text" or somehting like that (it's been a while since I've burned anything from iTunes) The MMCS should read that. I burned about 30 mix CDs from iTunes onto the MMCS and didn't have to type in one song!

craigm3, I will definitely try that. If it works, you win the "Reader Comment of the Day" award.

My pleasure.

Doing this will be a blast! Have someone do it for you while you drive. Does the system read enscripted burned CDs? At times, some programs add the file text with the CD. Otherwise abbreviate, we're talking real labor hours of letter insertion.
