Last night when offered the 2007 Cadillac SRX or the 2007 Jeep Wrangler, I jumped at the latter naturally. Ferget luxury, I wanted my fun mobile. Besides, I was driving to downtown for the evening and figured it would be much easier to find a spot to park the Jeep.
When on the freeway driving about 70 mph, I couldn't help but notice all the wind noise in the cabin as the wind buffeted the canvas roof...
It also has the power window buttons in a weird place (the center dash), manually-adjustable mirrors and cloth straps for door joints. What might scream "inconvenient" to others reads "charming" to me. But that's just me.
I also love driving it on the freeway. With a 3.8-liter V6, it has enough power to pass slow and not-so-slow vehicles. The steering feels light and since I'm riding high, I can see what traffic jams to avoid and easily switch lanes before the backup starts. Ha! The only thing is that I noticed that the plastic windows in the rear are starting to yellow up a bit and that makes me wonder how much that will affect rear vision in the future.

All you need is a little Meguiars PlastX and a rag. Works great on headlights, windows and the like.

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

I guess sunshine is not a part of the trail test that some Jeeps are subjected to...

I love jeeps battle plan.
everything that would be bad on every other truck, we just call 'tough' and 'outdoorsy' and people will love. lets say that again WILL love it.
why cant you have both? a quite ride, and good off road. oh wait, because that would actually require work. instead jeep releases the same car for 60 years (wrangler) and people deal with all its short comings, phhfff.

opfreak -- I'm sure if someone was looking for both quiet and good off road abilities, they would not buy a Wrangler in the first place. People aren't stupid....well in most cases. To buy a car and then to complain about it shows you did not shop around.
People buy a Wrangler because 1) it's fun 2) you feel adventuresome every time to get in it 3) it's rugged 4) it has 60 years worth of character...something only a Land Rover or a Land Cruiser would have. If these aren't appealing qualities to you the DON'T BUY IT!!!

This story brings back memories of my parent's old 79 Renegade. In addition to the wind noise, the doors would occasionally pop open on the highway and in the winter a fine film of frost would form on the inside of the plastic windows. It was the character, warm memories of driving around with the top off, and off-road capabilities that made up for these shortcomings. Call me a romantic, but I am glad some of these characteristics are still in place.

the buyer is not the problem, the ciritcs/reviewers are. While yes the jeeps have gotten 'better'. its more because everything else got better then jeep trying to be better.
Could they not design a removable roof with low wind noise? you would think after doing the same thing for 60 years they would have figured it out by now?
But with jeep you can pass everything bad off, because well its a jeep, and jeeps are supposd to be bad in xyz. How about rising the standards a notch?

Jeep offers a quiet ride and good off road. It's called the Grand Cherokee (or the Liberty is you budget is less).
Name a vehicle that doesn't have short comings. i.e. .... A CRV is quiet and comfortable but the top doesn't come off, it can't go off road and it can't tow.
I suppose Jeep could come up with some clever engineering fixs but then it would cost twice as much and no one would buy it.
I like the Jeep the way it is. The "problems" only annoy car guys, not the people who buy Jeeps.

opfreak -- Jeep offers a factory removable hard top for the Wrangler. It's heavy, It requires a partner to remove, and it takes up a chunk of your garage. (I also believe it takes tools; someone else can clarify that)
The soft top to the Wrangler is light, can be folded up by one person (the four door version probably needs a partner: see previous blog post), and it's stowed on-board so you can take it down anywhere.
Also, there is a huge after-market for Jeeps. Making it simple to build makes it easier for people to modify them. It's built rugged because people actually take them out on trails and beat the snot out of them every weekend.
If you had something "comfortable" on the trail, like a Mazda CX-7, it would be torn to shreds.
Jeeps are not Camrys...they're not made for everyone. They are made for people who go out on the trails (or no trails)...it is not made to be the office car-pool vehicle. I think you fail to grasp this.
It's as if you criticize a Ferrari because it's too low to the ground.

You missing my point.
that same ferrari over time improved. steering is better, faster, etc. they try to make them better.
Jeep is the only brand where the status quo is always good enough.
And jeep people think they are better then others buy saying things like 'its a jeep thing you wouldn't understand'. bla bla bla.
Just look at all the excuses made for the brand. everything wrong can be brushed under the great Jeep rug.

Are you actually suggesting that Jeeps have not improved over the years? Ever driven one? Drive a CJ then try a YJ. Big improvement.
Go from a YJ to a TJ, huge improvement in ride and handling plus a big drop in noise.
The new Wrangler is such a big jump over the TJ that car writers like Edmunds like it.
Ferrari makes there cars better but they don't take away the Ferrari look or feel to do it. Jeep is the same.
The market is full of soft roaders that would suit you fine, why not just accept there is nothing wrong for the people that like it.

opfreak -- If you don't like Jeep's heritage style and uniqueness go to Hummer and drop $80 grand for an H1. I'm sure you'll like GM quality over Chrysler. Hell, Hummers were developed in the late 70s, so they have a thirty year leg up on Jeeps.
